Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir Guide Book of Harvard College and Its Historical Vicinity The publisher thinks it necessary to prefix a few words of apology and explanation. He has not attempted to give in this short guide book an exhaustive description of everything to be seen; for this would neither be possible (outside of a large volume) nor practical. But he has attempted to point out the things which he thinks the most interesting to the ordinary visitor, whose time is generally limited, and he has for this reason avoided taking the visitor to such places as the Observatory and Botanic Gardens (See Appendix) which present nothing different from what may be seen in any first class observatory or botanical gardens. He does not consider the book perfect, by any means; but hopes in future editions to make such changes and additions that he may finally achieve a comprehensive, yet practical guide book of Harvard, which will not only help the tourist while there, but be of sufficient merit to be preserved as a souvenir. Our visitor is assumed to have arrived at Harvard College, which can be reached in half an hour from Boston, either by carriage or by the Cambridge horse cars that start from Bowdoin Square. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide Book to the Grounds and Buildings of Harvard University Harvard College was founded in 1636 by a vote passed at an adjourned meeting (October 28, Old Style) of the General Court of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. The language of the vote was as follows: "The Court agree to give four Hundred Pounds towards a School or College, whereof two Hundred Pounds shall be paid the next year, and Two Hundred Pounds when the work is finished, and the next Court to appoint where and what building." The ensuing year (1637) the General Court appointed twelve of the most eminent men of the colony (among whom were John Cotton and John Winthrop) "to take order for a college at Newtown." The name "Newtown" was soon afterwards change by the General Court to Cambridge, in recognition of the English University where many of the colonists had been educated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Guide-Book IN CE the publication of the last comprehensive guide-book to Harvard more than twelve years ago, the growth of the university has been greater than at any previous period of its existence. The number of students has increased from less than 1400 to more than 3200; the amount of property held by the corporation has grown from a little more than to almost and nearly a score of new buildings or large additions to old ones have been erected. Owing to this rapid material development of the university, the informa tion contained in the old guide-books has been left far behind, and the need of a new guide-book has become year by year more evident. To meet this need the present publication has been issued. The aim has been to make it as compact and at the same time as complete as possible. When I returned to Cambridge at the end of Septem ber, it was almost with a feeling of anxiety that I went back to a spot where I had happily sauntered away so many an idle hour. I feared lest I should find that, under the fierce influ ence of the summer heats, most of its charms had passed away. My mind was soon set at rest. The Yard, I re corded, looked very pretty and pleasant in the sunshine of an autumn day. I wandered about it for more than half an hour with enjoyment, watching the bustle of the beginning of term, and the young life so full of activity and hope. Behavioral design offers a new solution. Iris Bohnet shows that by de-biasing organizations instead of individuals, we can make smart changes that have big impacts—often at low cost and high speed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The director of the famed Bodleian Libraries at Oxford narrates the global history of the willful destruction—and surprising survival—of recorded knowledge over the past three millennia. Libraries and archives have been attacked since ancient times but have been especially threatened in the modern era. Today the knowledge they safeguard faces purposeful destruction and willful neglect; deprived of funding, libraries are fighting for their very existence. Burning the Books recounts the history that brought us to this point. Richard Ovenden describes the deliberate destruction of knowledge held in libraries and archives from ancient Alexandria to contemporary Sarajevo, from smashed Assyrian tablets in Iraq to the destroyed immigration documents of the UK Windrush generation. He examines both the motivations for these acts—political, religious, and cultural—and the broader themes that shape this history. He also looks at attempts to prevent and mitigate attacks on knowledge, exploring the efforts of librarians and archivists to preserve information, often risking their own lives in the process. More than simply repositories for knowledge, libraries and archives inspire and inform citizens. In preserving notions of statehood recorded in such historical documents as the Declaration of Independence, libraries support the state itself. By preserving records of citizenship and records of the rights of citizens as enshrined in legal documents such as the Magna Carta and the decisions of the US Supreme Court, they support the rule of law. In Burning the Books, Ovenden takes a polemical stance on the social and political importance of the conservation and protection of knowledge, challenging governments in particular, but also society as a whole, to improve public policy and funding for these essential institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A university press is a curious institution, dedicated to the dissemination of learning yet apart from the academic structure; a publishing firm that is in business, but not to make money; an arm of the university that is frequently misunderstood and occasionally attacked by faculty and administration. Max Hall here chronicles the early stages and first sixty years of Harvard University Press in a rich and entertaining book that is at once Harvard history, publishing history, printing history, business history, and intellectual history. The tale begins in 1638 when the first printing press arrived in British North America. It became the property of Harvard College and remained so for nearly half a century. Hall sketches the various forerunners of the "real" Harvard University Press, founded in 1913, and then follows the ups and downs of its first six decades, during which the Press published steadily if not always serenely a total of 4,500 books. He describes the directors and others who left their stamp on the Press or guided its fortunes during these years. And he gives the stories behind such enduring works as Lovejoy's Great Chain of Being, Giedion's Space, Time, and Architecture, Langer's Philosophy in a New Key, and Kelly's Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings.
