Book excerpt: "During summer the interior of the United States and northern Mexico west of the Continental Divide experience frequent intrusions of moist tropical air. In the months of July and August the greatest northward flux occurs. June and September are transition months from spring to summer and summer to falI, respectively. During these months, particularly June, there is a predominance of rather dry air-mass conditions"--Introduction
Book Synopsis The Global Monsoon System by : Chih-Pei Chang
Download or read book The Global Monsoon System written by Chih-Pei Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a current review of the science of monsoon research and forecasting. The contents are based on the invited reviews presented at the World Meteorological Organization''s Fourth International Workshop on Monsoons in late 2008, with subsequent manuscripts revised from 2009 to early 2010. The book builds on the concept that the monsoons in various parts of the globe can be viewed as components of an integrated global monsoon system, while emphasizing that significant region-specific characteristics are present in individual monsoon regions. The topics covered include all major monsoon regions and time scales (mesoscale, synoptic, intraseasonal, interannual, decadal, and climate change). It is intended to provide an updated comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge, modeling capability, and future directions in the research of monsoon systems around the world.

Book Synopsis The Mono Basin Ecosystem by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Mono Basin Ecosystem written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1987-02-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mono Basin is a closed hydrologic basin spanning the border between California and Nevada. Los Angeles has been diverting streams since 1941 that normally would flow into Mono Lake. It has been predicted that continued diversion will have major ecological consequences for the natural resources of the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area. This book studies the ecological risk assessment that considers the effects of water diversions on an inland saline lake. It examines the hydrology of the Mono Basin, investigates the lake's physical and chemical systems, studies the biological relationships, and predicts the effects of changes in lake levels on the ecosystem.
Book Synopsis Ecology of Meromictic Lakes by : Ramesh D. Gulati
Download or read book Ecology of Meromictic Lakes written by Ramesh D. Gulati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent advances in the research on meromictic lakes and a state-of-the art overview of this area. After an introduction to the terminology and geographic distribution of meromictic lakes, three concise chapters describe their physical, chemical and biological features. The following eight chapters present case studies of more than a dozen meromictic lakes, showing the variety of physical and biochemical processes that promote meromixis. The result is a broad picture of the ecology and biochemistry of meromictic lakes in tropical and cold regions, in man-made pit lakes and euxinic marine lakes, and in freshwater as well as hypersaline lakes. In the final chapter the editors provide a synthesis of the topic and conclude that the study of meromictic lakes also offers new insights into the limnology of inland lakes. The book appeals to researchers in the fields of ecology, limnology, environmental physics and biophysics.

Book Synopsis Moisture Source for Three Extreme Local Rainfalls in the Southern Intermountain Region by : E. Marshall Hansen
Download or read book Moisture Source for Three Extreme Local Rainfalls in the Southern Intermountain Region written by E. Marshall Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three cases of extreme local precipitation within the Intermountain summer season were studied to determine the source of moisture for these events. The rains occurred at Phoenix, Ariz. on June 22, 1972 (133 mm in 2 hours), at Elko, Nev. on August 27, 1970 (105 mm in about 2 hours), and at Morgan, Utah on August 16, 1958 (about 150 rnm in 1 hour). Synoptic data were used to analyze surface and upper levelmoisture changes in time and space. In each case the study showed that a tongue of high moisture at low levels approached the vicinity of or encompassed the storm area prior to onset of the rain. The tongue of moisture was very narrow in reaching toward the Elko and Morgan storms and could be traced, through continuity of changes in pattern with time, back to the Gulf of California. The moisture is believed to be conveyed through the natural channel provided by the Gulf and the paralleling ridges. The low-level moisture followed a path controlled to some extent by major mountain barriers. A general conclusion is that greater emphasis should be given to tropical Pacific moisture in evaluating extreme summer precipitation values for the Intermountain region.
