Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1892, this combination mug book/gazetteer was the first of its kind on the state of Virginia. The essays on the history, topography, geology, and natural resources of southwest Virginia were written by "well-known scientists and men of letters, and the facts set forth by them, while in some instances astounding, are correct." The biographical sketches are of "honorable men" from all walks of life. "Here will be found instances of men rising, by individual merit alone, from penury and obscurity to wealth and distinction; of many who, in pride and strength of young manhood, left the farm and the anvil, the lawyer's office and the counting-room, left every trade and profession, and, at their country's call, went forth valiantly to do or die.... Here, also, will be found men whose lives illumine the pages of a nation's history, and whose deeds in war and statesmanship reflect naught but honor upon a noble people - men in whose lives are united the glorious Old South with the unparalleled New."

Book excerpt: Southwest Virginia and Shenandoah Valley comprise the fairest dominion of any section of country lying within the limits of the Southern States. The wonderful development of these two sections which has marked the progress of events in the past ten years in the Southern States will be treated in this work rather in accordance with the landmark of time than that of territory. The great Southwest, neither more beautiful nor richer in agricultural and mineral resources than Shenandoah Valley, will be taken first, because, in point of time, it was the first to adorn the robe of material progress and growth. -- Introduction.

Excerpt: ...was taken, which vote resulted in the report of the committee being rejected and Francis Preston was thereupon declared duly seated. Colonel Preston was returned a member of Congress from this district by successive elections till the year 1797. Thus our district early in its history witnessed a contest before the Congress of the United States. At the election held for a presidential elector, on the first Monday in November, 1792, for the district composed of the counties of Wythe, Washington, Russell and Montgomery, Claiborne Watkins was selected an elector from this district to vote for President ami Vice-President of the United States. In the month of December, 1792, Captain Tate and forty men were passing through the wilderness on their way to Kentucky, when they were attacked by a company of Creek and Cherokee Indians, and, about the same time, several lesser encounters occurred, but I cannot ascertain the casualties on either side. In the fall of 1792, the citizens of North Carolina provoked a war with the Indians, and, in the month of October, John Watts, at the head of a thousand hostile Indians, threatened an invasion of the Holston settlements and the settlements in Powell's Valley. Watts, with his forces, began his march for the settlements, and reached Buchanan's fort within five miles of Knoxville, where he was repulsed with a loss of fifteen men killed, Watts himself receiving a bad wound. After this repulse, Watts's army dispersed in small parties, declaring their purpose to invade the settlements and to attack the settlers out of their forts. It was the declared purpose of Watts and his followers, to drive off and destroy the whole of the inhabitants in Powell's Valley. The situation was truly alarming for the Virginia...

Book excerpt: A close study of one region of Appalachia that experienced economic vitality and strong sectionalism before the Civil War This book examines the construction of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad through southwest Virginia in the 1850s, before the Civil War began. The building and operation of the railroad reoriented the economy of the region toward staple crops and slave labor. Thus, during the secession crisis, southwest Virginia broke with northwestern Virginia and embraced the Confederacy. Ironically, however, it was the railroad that brought waves of Union raiders to the area during the war

Their joys and tears during their time on earth, forgotten as the decades moved on. Their life stories are now uncovered to be remembered for future generations. We can learn from the pain and struggles beginning with the birth of our nation. They can teach us about the core values and their magnificent vision for a republic. These notable Scottish and English ancestors left their heraldry for America's wilderness to become some of the first pioneer families in Southwest Virginia.

Book excerpt: This new book brings to life the material-culture heritage of southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. In Backcountry Makers, Betsy K. White expands on her previous study of the region's rich decorative arts legacy, Great Road Style, to offer a closer look at the individual artisans responsible for the diverse works that constitute that legacy. Beautifully illustrated with some 230 photographs, most of them in color, this volume includes biographical sketches of seventy-five makers—potters, weavers, spinners, quilters, embroiderers, cabinetmakers, metalsmiths, clocksmiths, gunsmiths, and artists—who worked in the region from the earliest eighteenth-century settlement days to the late twentieth century. The entry for each artisan is accompanied by one or more images of a signed or marked work, or, in a number of instances, an unmarked work with certain provenance. These vignettes offer a fascinating glimpse of the people behind the various pieces, describing their background, family life, and where they learned their trade. Using census records and other documentary evidence, White has traced the earliest of these artisans from their origins in such places as Europe and Philadelphia down through the Great Valley of Virginia to their ultimate destinations in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. Along with the photos displaying the products of their craftsmanship, the book also includes a number of evocative images of the artists and their homes and towns, thus giving the reader a fuller sense of the region where these gifted people lived and worked. One of the few studies to addresses handmade objects in this locale—and one of the even fewer works to focus on the artisans themselves— Backcountry Makers will be of great value not only to scholars of material culture and the arts in Appalachia but also to those who collect regional antiques and crafts and want to know more about the individuals who made them.

The volumes also include lists of soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War, the French-Indian War, and the Indian wars prior to 1800. Also compiled are the early records of most of the land surveys and marriages, briefs of deeds and wills, and the court minutes of Botetourt, Fincastle, Montgomery, Washington, and Wythe counties.
