Book Synopsis Mineral Resources in Iceland Volume II by : Richard Pokorný
Download or read book Mineral Resources in Iceland Volume II written by Richard Pokorný and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral resources, vital for any society, have historically driven exploration in Iceland through three key phases. Early Icelandic settlers to America and Australia got hooked on gold exploration at the onset of the nineteenth century, and brought this knowledge back when they returned home. In the 1970s, Yugoslav geologist Slobodan Janković led a comprehensive exploration for economic resources, especially metals around large intrusions. The 1990s marked the third phase, linking geothermal systems to gold and metal deposition, exemplified by metal-rich scales in the Reykjanes peninsula. This book covers historical accounts, newspaper stories, and scientific results. The first chapters explore ore deposits in old volcanic centres, silicic bodies and young volcanic systems. The second section covers story-cases about gold, silver and other metals, and also includes a chapter focused on the Faeroe Islands, the nearby archipelago with a similar geology to Iceland.
Book Synopsis The History of Iceland by : Gunnar Karlsson
Download or read book The History of Iceland written by Gunnar Karlsson and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iceland is unique among European societies in having been founded as late as the Viking Age and in having copious written and archaeological sources about its origin. Gunnar Karlsson, that country's premier historian, chronicles the age of the Sagas, consulting them to describe an era without a monarch or central authority. Equating this prosperous time with the golden age of antiquity in world history, Karlsson then marks a correspondence between the Dark Ages of Europe and Iceland's "dreary period", which started with the loss of political independence in the late thirteenth century and culminated with an epoch of poverty and humility, especially during the early Modern Age. Iceland's renaissance came about with the successful struggle for independence in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and with the industrial and technical modernization of the first half of the twentieth century. Karlsson describes the rise of nationalism as Iceland's mostly poor peasants set about breaking with Denmark, and he shows how Iceland in the twentieth century slowly caught up economically with its European neighbors.

Book Synopsis Crime and Justice, Volume 43 by : Michael Tonry
Download or read book Crime and Justice, Volume 43 written by Michael Tonry and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent and property crime rates in all Western countries have been falling since the early and mid-1990s, after rising in the 1970s and 1980s. Few people have noticed the common patterns and fewer have attempted to understand or explain them. Yet the implications are essential for thinking about crime control and criminal justice policy more broadly. Crime rates in Canada and the United States, for example, have moved in parallel for 40 years, but Canada has neither increased its imprisonment rate nor adopted harsher criminal justice policies. The implication is that something other than mass imprisonment, zero-tolerance policing, and “three-strikes” laws explains why crime rates in our time are falling. The essays in this 43rd volume of Crime and Justice explore the possibilities cross-nationally. They document the common rises and falls in crime and look at possible explanations, including changes in sensitivity to violence generally and intimate violence in particular, macro-level changes in self-control, and structural and economic developments in modern states. The contributors to this volume include Marcelo Aebi, Andromachi Tseloni, Eric Baumer, Manuel Eisner, Graham Farrell, Janne Kivivuori, Tapio Lappi-Seppälä, Suzy McElrath, Richard Rosenfeld, Rossella Selmini, Nick Tilley, and Kevin T. Wolff.
Download or read book Birds of Essex written by Simon Wood and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential reference for anybody who has watched birds in this amazing county. The County Avifaunas give full details of the status and range of every species recorded in the county in question. Each title covers all species on the county list, with a detailed breakdown of rarity records, and each has introductory sections describing the county's general ecology, climate, weather patterns, its ornithological history and conservation record. Essex is of national and international importance to many migrating and wintering wildfowl and waders, which can be found on the estuaries. Further inland, the Lea Valley harbours important populations of several species within the complex of reservoirs and gravel-pits. Elsewhere, the diverse habits of woodland and parkland, heaths and commons, agricultural land and urban areas mean that at all times of year there is the opportunity to see upwards of 100 species in a day with little effort. This book analyses and summarises all the data collated and documented over the last 200 years and includes available records to the end of 2004. Introductory chapters discuss the geology and habitats of Essex and the amazing fossil bird record. The individual accounts provide an up-to-date status of each species and patterns of occurrence within Essex. A distribution map is included for most breeding species. A breakdown and analysis are provided for all county rarities. Superb line drawings and photographs illustrate the book, all by talented local artists and photographers.
