Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Railway Gallery is the first volume in a new series of picture books, designed to be of interest to railway historians and modellers. The series subjects are themed to include an interesting mixture of useful historic illustrations, depicting locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure.Southern Railway Gallery covers the history of the Southern Railway from its beginings in 1923, to nationalisation in 1948, covering most aspects of its fascinating history and operations. The book looks at aspects of the Southern from the early years in the early 1920s, when the company had old worn-out stock on many of its lines, through to the introduction of new modern rolling stock and the electrification of much of its network in Kent, Sussex, Surrey and parts of Hampshire. The company operated an extensive rail and bus network on the Isle of Wight, which covered the whole island and is well remembered to this day.Although the Southern introduced a number of modern new steam classes, its main goal was to electrify as much of the network as possible, however this did not preclude the company from introducing two classes of successful Pacific type locomotives in the 1940s.The company owned and operated docks and harbours throughout its existence, having an extensive fleet of ferries and cargo vessels, some of which served with the Royal Navy in the Second World War as hospital ships. The Southern, also operated bus and road services, which covered many areas not served by a local railway station on the system. The Southern Railway ceased to exist at midnight on 31 December 1947, after a remarkable existence of twenty-four years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Railway's Spencer Shops was a vibrant part of the Southeast's transportation network for more than 80 years. Starting in the late 1800s and continuing until its closure in 1979, the shop complex and its accompanying yards, transfer sheds, and stockyards constituted a major force in the economy of North Carolina and Southern states. The trains that the shop prepared were hauling everyday freight--Appalachian lumber, Piedmont textiles, and perishables--or were famous passenger trains like the Crescent, the Peach Queen, and many more. Others were more notable, such as the locomotive in the folk ballad "The Wreck of the Old 97" or President Roosevelt's funeral train in 1945. The Spencer Shops was an industrial power whose prominence today is celebrated in its continued role as the home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum. This book tells the story of how Spencer Shops came to be, its role in transportation, and its continued use today as a North Carolina Historic Site.

One of the most scenic trainlines in the United Kingdom, the Cambrian Line carries passengers through mountains and market towns, offering views of castles, countryside, and World Heritage sites as it makes its way to the breathtaking Welsh coast. This volume offers a brief history of the Cambrian Railways’ early years, followed by a magnificent and comprehensive set of early photographs of Cambrian engines, Oswestry Works, and sumptuous Welsh scenery. The book is written by British Railways expert David Maidment together with Paul Carpenter, who brings the story of the Cambrian up to date. Carpenter also invites a number of former railwaymen who to share their memories of working on the Cambrian system. The book also covers the efforts of Cambrian Heritage Railways to restore part of the closed section of the line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It could be argued that the great Western or 'Gods' Wonderful Railway' was for many years the most famous railway in England. Much of the railway that we see today was the work of one of the greatest engineers of his time, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The company was also served by locomotive engineers such as Gooch, Armstrong, Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth, who produced a series of locomotives that were well designed, elegant and powerful.Serving many holiday resorts of the south west, with trains such as 'The Cornish Riviera Express,' the publicity department exploited to great effect that the 'Great Western' was the 'Holiday Line.' It is probably true to say that in the years before the Second World War the company was producing some of the most effective publicity material in England.Using previously unpublished material from the extensive 'Great Western Trust' collection at Didcot Railway Centre, the book illustrates in both black and white and color many facets that made the Great Western 'Great"

Book excerpt: Ukrainian Railroad Ladies is a series of portraits of traffic controllers and safety officers at railroads of Ukraine. It is an exploration of why these professions still exist in the twenty-first century, given the almost complete automatization of railroad crossings. It is a study of the anthropological and social aspects of this phenomenon and the overall role of Ukraines railroad system. The Ukrainian Railroad Ladies series has an aesthetic, educational, and humanistic bias, in that it serves to reflect the complex socio-political context which Ukrainian state structures work within. Of course, when it comes to the aesthetics behind the railway crossings, its not as if theyd been preemptively thought up and put together by somebody thats not what makes them so personal and distinctive. They have come about because of how these peoples personal lives dont stop when they come to work, and work doesnt finish when they clock out either.Sasha Maslov captured these signalwomen in the tradition of modern documentary photography, photographing each of his subjects in her everyday work environment, as if in the middle of her own small world. The clear and naive gaze of the lens on the subject of the portrait, alongside the subjects own gaze on her future beholder, establishes a remote visual communication, trust, and mutual sympathy between the future observer and the photo series real-life subjects. For every place and worker in the series there is only one standalone portrait, which has a comprehensive set of visual and ideological characteristics. However, the sheer number of photographs in the series shows just how varied and multifaceted this phenomenon can be, aesthetically and otherwise. Maslovs interest toward the visuals of this profession and the unique lifestyle of railway crossing controllers allowed him to explore this niche community and single out those local social ties which had never before come under analysis turning this photographic series into a piece of sociological research, beyond a purely aesthetic one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, David Kahler was deeply inspired by seeing an exhibition of O. Winston Link photographs. He soon began making annual trips to the West Virginia and eastern Kentucky coalfields, destinations that strongly resonated with his own aesthetic of "place." Armed with a used Leica M6 and gritty Tri-X film, he and his wife made six week-long trips in the dead of winter to photograph trains along the Pocahontas Division of the Norfolk Southern Railway. Nearly one hundred images edited from this body of work form the core of The Railroad and the Art of Place, along with a selection of earlier Pennsylvania Railroad steam-era photographs that reflect Kahler's interest in the railroad landscape from an early age. Also included are three essays by Kahler, Scott Lothes, and Jeff Brouws, discussing the personal motivations, historical context, and aesthetic development behind the photography. With funding for printing provided by the Kahler Family Charitable Fund, all sales will go to support the Center's work.

Book excerpt: Curt Tillotson, Jr. takes a close and personal look at the Southern Railway through his own photography in the period 1960-1982, with some photos from others going back to about 1950. He treats every class of diesel owned by the Southern from beginning to end. Some "roster" or "portrait" type photos are included but the bulk of the book comprises superb action photography with the locomotives and trains in a variety of settings. His extended captions capture the feel of the era of transition. Anyone interested in railroads of the Southeastern United States will be interested in this volume. Southern Railway hasn't been as well covered by books as some lines, but this book seeks to fill that gap in many ways, in the era of dieselization.

The city became the hub of an electric rail network that spread throughout the Willamette Valley. This is the story of the pioneering local railways that started it all as they built south along the Willamette River to Oregon City and east to Estacada and Bull Run in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. More than 200 historic images illustrate Portland's Interurban Railway from its rudimentary beginnings through the peak years, when passengers rode aboard the finest examples of the car builders' art, to the sudden end in 1958.
