Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rip Van Winkle of the Kalahari and Other Tales of South-West Africa most of these stories were written on the veldt; at odd times, in out-of-the-way prospecting camps, in the wilds of the Kalahari Deser, or of that equally little-known borderland between Klein Namaqualand, and Gordonia, Cape Colony, and what was at that time known as German South-West Africa. Four of them appeared a few years back in The State - an illustrated magazine now unhappily defunct: the others, though written about the same time, have never been published. And now, time and circumstances have combined to bring the scene in which they are laid most prominently before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of South Africa German south-west Africa is to-day the South Western Protectorate, brought under the British flag by South African troops led by General Botha. In German East Africa General Smuts has achieved great success at the head of troops drawn from England, India, and South Africa. Side by side the men of South Africa have fought and died, and not one of them has paused to say to his neighbour, 'are you English or Dutch?' for all alike have fought for the honour of the land in which they have a common heritage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Vanished German Colony: A Collection of Folklore, Folk Tales and Proverbs From South-West-Africa Once upon a time a certain girl left her father's place and went to the village of Long Snake. Having arrived at the village of Long Snake she remained there, but the owner of the place was absent. The only person present was the mother of the owner of the place. Then in the evening the mother of Long Snake gave that girl some millet that she might grind it. After it was ground she made bread. When it was ready the mother of Long Snake said bring this bread into the house of Long Snake. A short time after that girl went into the house the owner of the place arrived. Then she gave him bread and fermented milk, and he ate. When they had finished the food they went to sleep. Then early in the morning Long Snake went away, because in the daytime he lived in the open country. The girl went to the house of the parents of Long Snake. The mother of Long Snake clothed her with a very beautiful robe. After she was dressed she called for an axe and went to cut firewood. Having arrived in the open fields she did not cut the firewood, but she threw away the axe and ran to her father's place. After she arrived at her father's place her sister enquired where she had got that beautiful robe. Her sister told her, and she said, I am also going to that village. Her sister said, just listen to what I tell you of the custom of that village. But her sister said in reply, I do not want you to tell me anything because you yourself were not warned before you went. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explorations in South-West Africa: Being an Account of a Journey in the Years 1861 and 1862 From Walvisch Bay, on the Western Coast, to Lake Ngami and the Victoria Falls This work was written by my Son during a journey from Walvisch Bay, on the west coast of Africa, to the Victoria Falls of the Zambesi River, in company with Mr. J. Chapman, a former friend of the author's, who had spent many years in travelling and was well acquainted with the country and the language of the natives. In 1858 Mr. Baines was appointed artist to the Zambesi expedition under Dr. Livingstone, and accompanied his party to Tete, the principal town in the Portuguese territory, on the eastern coast of Africa; but leaving that expedition in 1861, he returned to Cape Town. On recovering from a severe illness, which was attended with fever and loss of sight for several weeks, he resolved to explore the interior himself, and if possible to cross the continent from the west coast to the Zambesi on the east. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Gold Coast of West Africa Seven days' further sail brought the expedition to a large bay, to which they gave the name of the Western Horn. In this bay was an island, on which they landed. During the day all was calm, but at night strange appearances pre sented themselves: the mountains seemed to be all on fire, and the sound 01 drums and cymbals was mingled with strange cries. Terrified at these sights and sounds the explorers hastily embarked, and as they continued their course to the south, columns of flame still illumined the midnight sky. Sailing seven days along this coast they came to a bay, which they called the Southern Horn, and found within it an island with a lake, and in this lake another island, filled with savages of a peculiar description. The females were covered with hair and were called Gorillas. The males fled across the precipices, and defended them selves with stones; but the Carthaginians captured three females. These, however, broke their bonds and fought so furiously that it was found necessary to kill them but their Skins were stuffed and brought to Carthage. The want of provisions prevented the explorers proceeding any further to the south. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some South African Recollections These recollections of a page in South African history have been written as a record for my children of the part played by their father in the Reform move ment in the Transvaal, as they were at the time too young to understand or appreciate all he did and suffered for the good cause. I have endeavoured to explain the origin of that movement, and why, for the moment, it failed. I venture to publish what I have written, as I am led to believe there are many people interested in the subject, but not sufficiently informed as to the true course of events, who would be glad to read the testimony of a South African. Seven years ago the South African Native Races Committee published the chief results of their inquiries in a book entitled The Natives of South Africa. Since that time important changes have taken place in native affairs, and others are impending. Much valuable information has become available. The Com mittee believe, therefore, that the time has come when a supplementary volume, describing the new order of things, dealing concisely with some of the more im portant developments, and stating some of the chief results Of recent investigations, may be useful. They have not attempted to go over the same ground as that Of the previous book. The scope of the present volume is more limited. But the Committee hope that some thing may be gained by concentrating attention on a few features. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
