Then in the evening the mother of Long Snake gave that girl some millet that she might grind it. After it was ground she made bread. When it was ready the mother of Long Snake said bring this bread into the house of Long Snake. A short time after that girl went into the house the owner of the place arrived. Then she gave him bread and fermented milk, and he ate. When they had finished the food they went to sleep. Then early in the morning Long Snake went away, because in the daytime he lived in the open country. The girl went to the house of the parents of Long Snake. The mother of Long Snake clothed her with a very beautiful robe. After she was dressed she called for an axe and went to cut firewood. Having arrived in the open fields she did not cut the firewood, but she threw away the axe and ran to her father's place. After she arrived at her father's place her sister enquired where she had got that beautiful robe. Her sister told her, and she said, I am also going to that village. Her sister said, just listen to what I tell you of the custom of that village. But her sister said in reply, I do not want you to tell me anything because you yourself were not warned before you went. Chapman, a former friend of the author's, who had spent many years in travelling and was well acquainted with the country and the language of the natives. In 1858 Mr. Baines was appointed artist to the Zambesi expedition under Dr. Livingstone, and accompanied his party to Tete, the principal town in the Portuguese territory, on the eastern coast of Africa; but leaving that expedition in 1861, he returned to Cape Town. On recovering from a severe illness, which was attended with fever and loss of sight for several weeks, he resolved to explore the interior himself, and if possible to cross the continent from the west coast to the Zambesi on the east. In this bay was an island, on which they landed. During the day all was calm, but at night strange appearances pre sented themselves: the mountains seemed to be all on fire, and the sound 01 drums and cymbals was mingled with strange cries. Terrified at these sights and sounds the explorers hastily embarked, and as they continued their course to the south, columns of flame still illumined the midnight sky. Sailing seven days along this coast they came to a bay, which they called the Southern Horn, and found within it an island with a lake, and in this lake another island, filled with savages of a peculiar description. The females were covered with hair and were called Gorillas. The males fled across the precipices, and defended them selves with stones; but the Carthaginians captured three females. These, however, broke their bonds and fought so furiously that it was found necessary to kill them but their Skins were stuffed and brought to Carthage.
