Book Synopsis Letting Go ... with a Clenched Fist by : Noreen Kauffman Fenton
Download or read book Letting Go ... with a Clenched Fist written by Noreen Kauffman Fenton and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes when life doesn’t turn out the way we thought it would, our tendency is to try to fight the feelings of loss, anger, and being out of control. Dreams are dashed, people get sick, promises are broken, deaths occur, life gets messy, and we clench our fists tightly around whatever we can, trying to hold onto our perception of normal. When we learn to loosen our grip, unclench our fists, and grasp God’s hand, a place of rest and healing can begin. His faithfulness becomes our new focus, and our tight knuckles open up and rest in God’s palm of peace. Letting go is possible, because the discovery of God’s faithfulness runs like a smooth salve over the bruised and broken places in our lives. That discovery can be trusted and counted on, beyond our wounded hearts, frayed nerves, and unanswerable questions. The journey is worth the process, and restoration and hope can then replace pain and loss.

Download or read book Where We Come From written by Oscar Cásares and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning and timely novel about a Mexican-American family in Brownsville, Texas, that reluctantly becomes involved in smuggling immigrants into the United States. From a distance, the towns along the U.S.-Mexican border have dangerous reputations--on one side, drug cartels; on the other, zealous border patrol agents--and Brownsville is no different. But to twelve-year-old Orly, it's simply where his godmother Nina lives--and where he is being forced to stay the summer after his mother's sudden death. For Nina, Brownsville is where she grew up, where she lost her first and only love, and where she stayed as her relatives moved away and her neighborhood deteriorated. It's the place where she has buried all her secrets--and now she has another: she's providing refuge for a young immigrant boy named Daniel, for whom traveling to America has meant trading one set of dangers for another. Separated from the violent human traffickers who brought him across the border and pursued by the authorities, Daniel must stay completely hidden. But Orly's arrival threatens to put them all at risk of exposure. Tackling the crisis of U.S. immigration policy from a deeply human angle, Where We Come From explores through an intimate lens the ways that family history shapes us, how secrets can burden us, and how finding compassion and understanding for others can ultimately set us free.

Book Synopsis Geology of Holocene Barrier Island Systems by : Richard A. Jr. Davis
Download or read book Geology of Holocene Barrier Island Systems written by Richard A. Jr. Davis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrier islands represent a complex coastal system that includes a number of different sedimentary depositional environments; nearshore zone, beach, dunes, washover fans, marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, lagoons, and tidal inlets. The morphodynamics of these fragile coastal systems provide a further complication to this coastal type. Although barrier islands comprise only 15% of the world's coastline, they have received a far greater proportion of attention from the scientific and engineering community, and more recently, from coastal managers and environmentalists. Modern barrier islands are arguably the most expensive and most vulnerable of all coastal environments. Pressure from developers for residential, industrial, and recreational development has caused most of our barriers to become significantly impacted by human activity, especially over the past few decades. These pres sures have led to extensive preservation of natural barriers through efforts from all levels of government and also by private organizations. Governments have also formed coastal management programs that help to control any future de velopment with the intent being to keep human activity compatible with barrier island morphodynamics. In order to devise appropriate coastal zone management programs, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the morpho dynamics of barrier island systems. This volume provides comprehensive details on barrier island morphology, sediment distribution, and the process-response mechanisms that cause changes to both. These are the important aspects of barrier systems that can provide important input into the development and implementation of coastal management programs.
