This was the medium that really brought photography to the masses; these cards were affordable, they were topical, and they could be sent for a penny anywhere in the country. The variety of imagery, much of it developed anonymously in small studios, much of it taken by inspired amateurs (these were the days when anyone could, and many folks did, own a camera) displays America in all its variety and vitality. Most postcards were mass produced and printed in ink by the collotype or halftone process. But a few were original photographic prints, exposed directly from glass plates or film negatives. Known as real photos these were real photographs, aristocrats of the genre and spectacular examples of vernacular photography. In this charming and scholarly book, Vaule selects the best of them, from all over the country, addressing their social and historical contexts, explaining the mysteries of their manufacture and dissemination, and describing the characteristics and identities of their makers, many of whose names and studios are listed in the book. On May 23, 1881, Clark County became an official county. The first courthouse was built in 1888 in Clark. Besides Clark, the following towns were soon formed: Bradley, Carpenter, Crocker, Elrod, Garden City, Melham, Naples, Raymond, Vienna, and Willow Lake. Clark County, located in northeast South Dakota in the Glacial Lakes and Prairie Region, is home to some 4,500 residents.

Book excerpt: The Great Depression of the 1930s set the stage for "the greatest afforestation program the world has known" when the Forest Service was given the task of planting shelterbelts from Texas to Canada in a zone a hundred miles wide. The venture, known as the Prairie States Forestry Project or the Shelterbelt Project, resulted in the planting of millions of trees between 1834 and 1942. Today, the millions of trees planted in the Depression stand as a monument to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who originated the idea of the project, and to friends of environmental concern everywhere. Not all the trees are living, and many of the belts have been removed in the interest of technological advances in Plains' agriculture or the farmer's decision to increase his planting acreage. Conservationists and spokesmen in government have become alarmed by the destruction of the belts. The time has come to re-evaluate the importance of trees to the environment of the prairies and plains of mid-America, for recent droughts again created a need to plant trees to combat erosion and to make the region more hospitable to the people who live there and who provide the world with its bread.
