Book excerpt: Daily Devotions for Die-Hard Fans: South Carolina Gamecocks combines the great passion of the Gamecock fan with the grand passion of the fan of Christ in one set of devotions. The result is a book that is fun while it provides a time of reflection about God and your faith. The Gamecock football team once made a decision that killed a bowl game. The greatest fast-pitch softball player in USC history didn't even play the game until she arrived in Columbia. USC's stunning upset of Georgia in 2019 turned out to be the fulfillment of a piece of Hilinski family prophecy. The USC women just had too much to overcome to beat Miss. State for the 2017 national title. Funny thing about that. Clean air, clean water, and pretty girls - that's what lured Alex Hawkins to Columbia. These stories and more are recounted here. Also appearing are Steve Spurrier, A'ja Wilson, George Rogers, Marcus Lattimore, and many others. Their stories - along with legendary games, improbable victories, and historical events - are told with a twist: They are all tied to God's story. Have fun! Have faith! Go Cocks! Go God!

West revises understandings of the American South by offering a new perspective on two iconic figures in the region's social landscape. "Yeoman," a term of praise for the small landowning farmer, was commonly used during the antebellum era but ultimately eclipsed by "redneck," an epithet that emerged at the end of the nineteenth century. In popular use, each served less as a precise class label than as a means to celebrate or denigrate the moral and civic worth of broad groups of white men. Viewing these richly evocative figures as ideological inventions rather than sociological realities, West examines the divisions they obscured and the conflicts that gave them such force. The setting for this impressively detailed study is the Upper Piedmont of South Carolina, the sort of upcountry region typically associated with the white "plain folk." West shows how the yeoman ideal played a vital role in proslavery discourse before the Civil War but poorly captured the realities of life, with important implications for how historians understand the politics of slavery and the drive for secession. After the Civil War, the South Carolina upcountry was convulsed by the economic transformations and political conflicts out of which the redneck was born. West reinterprets key developments in the history of the New South--such as the politics of lynching and the phenomenon of the "Southern demagogue"--and uncovers the historical roots of a stereotype that continues to loom large in popular understandings of the American South. Drawing together periods and topics often treated separately, West combines economic, social, and political history in an original and compelling account.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in chronological order, this book provides essential details about the 1,152 men and women who were legally put to death in North and South Carolina during the century after the Civil War. Each entry contains information about the criminals themselves and the deeds which cost them their lives. Based almost entirely on original archival materials such as court records, contemporary newspapers, prisoner files, appellate reports, gubernatorial correspondence, etc., a newer picture of the historical record emerges that students of Southern justice will find both revealing and disconcerting.

This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 2658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course of daily life in the United States has been a product of tradition, environment, and circumstance. How did the Civil War alter the lives of women, both white and black, left alone on southern farms? How did the Great Depression change the lives of working class families in eastern cities? How did the discovery of gold in California transform the lives of native American, Hispanic, and white communities in western territories? Organized by time period as spelled out in the National Standards for U.S. History, these four volumes effectively analyze the diverse whole of American experience, examining the domestic, economic, intellectual, material, political, recreational, and religious life of the American people between 1763 and 2005. Working under the editorial direction of general editor Randall M. Miller, professor of history at St. Joseph's University, a group of expert volume editors carefully integrate material drawn from volumes in Greenwood's highly successful Daily Life Through History series with new material researched and written by themselves and other scholars. The four volumes cover the following periods: The War of Independence and Antebellum Expansion and Reform, 1763-1861, The Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Industrialization of America, 1861-1900, The Emergence of Modern America, World War I, and the Great Depression, 1900-1940 and Wartime, Postwar, and Contemporary America, 1940-Present. Each volume includes a selection of primary documents, a timeline of important events during the period, images illustrating the text, and extensive bibliography of further information resources—both print and electronic—and a detailed subject index.
