Book excerpt: This illustrated study explores the connections between sound and color, making a case for the existence of a synesthetic phenomenon that links the two. Drawing on scientific research and artistic examples, the author provides a compelling argument for viewing sound and color as fundamentally intertwined and mutually influential. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sound and Colour: Their Relations, Analogies, and Harmonies Painting, as an Art, may be at least on a par with Music; but Music as a Science, is certainly in advance of the fine Arts, its most essential principles admitting of mathematical expression. This last remark, however, has special reference to harmony, for we are still almost quite ignorant of the philosophy of the representative or allegorical power of music; and design and drawing in the arts, as regulated by precept and principle, are much more intelligible than the essential nature of subject and theme in music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Principles and Analogy of the Harmony of Form There can be no doubt that the effect produced by the harmony of sound, colour, and form, are equally the result of a susceptibility of the human mind, which renders it capable of appreciating an adhe rence to certain natural principles by which harmony in every case is produced. These principles are clearly understood in regard to the harmony of sound, from its having occupied the attention of the most eminent natural philosophers in all ages. Colours, likewise, since the discoveries of Sir Isaac newton, have in their combinations been reduced to something like system. But the harmony of form has been left out of those enquiries, as a matter depending upon opinion alone, unless in regard to architecture, where the works of the ancients have in some measure supplied the want of general principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. Bruce Elder argues that the authors of many of the manifestoes that announced in such lively ways the appearance of yet another artistic movement shared a common aspiration: they proposed to reformulate the visual, literary, and performing arts so that they might take on attributes of the cinema. The cinema, Elder argues, became, in the early decades of the twentieth century, a pivotal artistic force around which a remarkable variety and number of aesthetic forms took shape. To demonstrate this, Elder begins with a wide-ranging discussion that opens up some broad topics concerning modernity’s cognitive (and perceptual) regime, with a view to establishing that a crisis within that regime engendered some peculiar, and highly questionable, epistemological beliefs and enthusiasms. Through this discussion, Elder advances the startling claim that a crisis of cognition precipitated by modernity engendered, by way of response, a peculiar sort of “pneumatic (spiritual) epistemology.” Elder then shows that early ideas of the cinema were strongly influenced by this pneumatic epistemology and uses this conception of the cinema to explain its pivotal role in shaping two key moments in early-twentieth-century art: the quest to bring forth a pure, “objectless” (non-representational) art and Russian Suprematism, Constructivism, and Productivism.
