Download or read book Homophones and Homographs written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-07-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expanded fourth edition defines and cross-references 9,040 homophones and 2,133 homographs (up from 7,870 and 1,554 in the 3rd ed.). As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail—although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer.
Book Synopsis Sound and Script in Chinese Diaspora by : Jing Tsu
Download or read book Sound and Script in Chinese Diaspora written by Jing Tsu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when language wars are not about hurling insults or quibbling over meanings, but are waged in the physical sounds and shapes of language itself? Native and foreign speakers, mother tongues and national languages, have jostled for distinction throughout the modern period. The fight for global dominance between the English and Chinese languages opens into historical battles over the control of the medium through standardization, technology, bilingualism, pronunciation, and literature in the Sinophone world. Encounters between global languages, as well as the internal tensions between Mandarin and other Chinese dialects, present a dynamic, interconnected picture of languages on the move. In Sound and Script in Chinese Diaspora, Jing Tsu explores the new global language trade, arguing that it aims at more sophisticated ways of exerting influence besides simply wielding knuckles of power. Through an analysis of the different relationships between language standardization, technologies of writing, and modern Chinese literature around the world from the nineteenth century to the present, this study transforms how we understand the power of language in migration and how that is changing the terms of cultural dominance. Drawing from an unusual array of archival sources, this study cuts across the usual China-West divide and puts its finger on the pulse of a pending supranational world under “literary governance.”

Download or read book Look-Alike-Man written by T. F. Huene and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read, then, to see a greater God than you now see. Read to see truth that will take you closer to God. Read to gain your own personal joy and peace. Read to see more clearly the incredible relationship you most certainly have with an even more incredible, loving God. The most original Christian writing since Augustine and Aquinas, author Tom Huene's Look-Alike-Man answers long-standing questions about God and Satan, yet in an easy-to-read style. In this book, you will see why God could not possibly have created Satan and how the Bible does not say that He did. Huene's purpose is the following: 1) To magnify and put into its proper and lofty perspective the powerful and loving nature of the one and only God. 2) To show the 'Images of God' why they all—100 percent of them—can be absolutely certain of spending eternity with their magnificent Creator in heaven. He addresses age-old assumptions about God, Satan, and man that need to be freshly reviewed with an open mind as well as with an open Bible. If you have as many questions about your Christian faith as Huene had, this is a must-read. Have you ever felt like there are actually two of you inside that body of yours? Well, you are correct. Read Look-Alike-Man to see who you really are.
