Book excerpt: In his last years, Otto Rank turned his lifetime of thought and learning toward two of the most difficult topics in human history: religion and the soul. The result was this now-classic work, available in this new, very accessible English translation. Unlike many other intellectuals of the twentieth century, Rank maintains a place for the soul rather than dismissing it as a fantasy. The soul and the beliefs about it, he argues, set forth the foundation for psychology, with its complex analyses of consciousness, self-consciousness, and personality. Rank's commentary is not limited to beliefs about individual souls but includes ideas about group souls, sometimes encompassing nations or generations. Rank suggests that it is in expression of group beliefs that the idea of the soul attains its greatest power.

Book excerpt: In an age dominated by science many traditional concepts are being reevaluated in light of current knowledge about the physical and biological world. Among the many religious notions passed down from generation to generation, belief in the soul may be the most in need of reconsideration. Despite its slightly antiquated nuances and its fuzziness as a coherent idea, people today still refer to the soul quite frequently We often hear such questions as: Can the soul leave the body? Does the soul survive death? And if so, do the souls of the departed occasionally appear to the living? But, given what we now know about the brain, psychology, and body chemistry, the skeptic may well ask, what meaning or relevance can this medieval term possibly have?Physicist Jerome W. Elbert takes up this intriguing issue in this informative yet accessible study. He begins by reviewing the ancient origins of the soul concept, looks at Christian beliefs and pagan parallels, and then considers how the advance of science has changed our fundamental understanding of the brain and consciousness. These new scientific insights, he points out, inevitably affect our traditional ideas about the soul. Moreover, many contemporary dilemmas have much to do with whether or not we posit the existence of a soul-for example, the question of free will and the debate over abortion. Taking into consideration the views of many recognized experts, he moves to the inescapable conclusion that we can account for the nature of life, the mind, and the human decision-making process without any need for the now obsolete idea of a soul.Insightful and absorbing, Are Souls Real? is popular science writing at its best.Jerome W. Elbert, Ph.D. (Tacoma, WA), now a self-employed researcher and writer, worked for many years as a research professor of physics at the University of Utah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times people have known about existence of the soul. Every present religion on the Earth acknowledges that the man has it and all religions confirm that the soul is immortal and its loss is equal to death. People offer prayers about salvation of their souls as the greatest value. Many religions accept the reincarnation theory i.e. incarnating of the soul when the soul leaves human body after death and moves to newly born human body to proceed its development. Thus, what is the soul and whats the structure? Our Heavenly Teachers have decided that it is time to give the humanity of third millennium new knowledge about the soul as people of sixth race who will live on the Earth in this period of time will be able to accept and understand these revealed truths. This book is devoted to this topic. New knowledge about the soul is shown up with care not to shock by the avalanche of new concepts. For the first time they revealed that the soul is not only the eddy of invisible spirit but it has like the human body its own structure. The first chapter of the book is about the structure of the soul. Creation of Soul Jesus Christ says in the Bible: In my Fathers house there are many rooms. This means there are many inhabited worlds in the Cosmos. Souls for these worlds are created by God himself and his aides special Hierarchical Systems. It takes 9 cosmic years to create one soul. One cosmic year is approximately equal to 1 billion earthly years because time of God and time on the Earth flies differently. God creates the soul and makes it spiritual. The only God governs the Great Secret of vivification. Without vivification there cannot be life as well. When we asked God What is the soul? He answered: The soul is the integral part of the Absolute. Many souls are sort of its interior filling. They are its main Units like cells in your body. All souls piece out the huge nature of the Absolute and God. Structure of Soul The Soul is the complex energetical construction. It is a volumetric favose structure matrix, where one volume enters another and all are merged. Cells of the matrix are completely digits which carry out energy. Total volume of the soul is called configuration. Types of soul configurations vary greatly. The self-construction principle is laid in the matrix. Every soul while developing builds its configuration basing on energetical volumes which fill up cells of the matrix. Qualitative and quantitative composition is different within all matrices. That is the reason why there are no two absolutely similar souls. The matrix is of great importance for every individual because a personality is not personality without it. Individual ceases existing without the matrix as an inspired creation. The soul is triune. It consists of 3 principles: plus, minus and managerial. When a soul has just been created all these three principles are equal and every part occupies 1/3 of total matrix volume. In the course of development the balance between its parts constantly changes, although if the managerial part reaches half the volume it maintains this balance. This is a program of soul construction. Soul Development Development and improvement of soul in everyday life consist in acquisition of life experience, new knowledge, evolving feelings and intellect, but on energetical plane it is enlargement of own energetical potential. The sense of life and any existence in any world is development of soul. There are only two ways of soul development for the man: plus direction to God and minus one to Devil. Ways of virtue, creativity, development through medicine and additionally way of computation and programming connected with creativity lead to God. Ways of evil, degradation, automatism and programming without creativity principle lead to Devil. Development of soul in any world is based on a program. Program of development is drawn up per one incarnation in the material body. It is saved on one of hum

Book excerpt: This book provides a nuanced picture of the notions of body and soul held by the peoples of Europe through the soul concepts associated with the Judeo-Christian tradition and other religions and denominations; and the alternative traditions preserved alongside Christianity in folklore collections, linguistic and literary records. The studies also emphasize the connections between these notions and beliefs related to death and the dead, as well as questions of communication between the human world and the spirit world. The essays here focus on the roles notions of the soul and the spirit world play in the everyday life, religion and mentality of various communities; their folklore and literary representations, as well as the narrative metaphors, motifs, topoi and genres of ideas about the soul and about supernatural communication, along with questions of the relationship between narratives and religious notions. This book will appeal to researchers and students of religion, mythology, folklore and the anthropology of religion, as well as general readers interested in the humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of spirituality, separated from its theological overburden, believes in the existence of a spiritual self, presumed to be distinctly separate from the psychological self. The spiritual eternal self, also known as the soul or spirit (sometimes supported by an overarching Spirit), is asserted to be operating behind the ephemeral self. This book takes a contrarian stance; it argues that the premise of the soul concept is obtained through the magic of language, maintained through the marvel of the brain’s biochemistry, and sustained through the mirage of the psychological juggernauts of the brain. The magic, the marvel and the mirage, together, bring about subtle shifts as the linguistic brain suppresses many psychological details, habitually applies mental templates such as inversions and dichotomies, and enhances its language by coining religious and spiritual metaphors. The consequence of these changes is that the usual flickering self begins to be impressed by itself, believing it is buttressed by something transcendental and eternal within: the soul or the spirit. The self, although indoctrinated during its formative years, also begins to assimilate and accept the opinion that the overwhelming weight of religious doctrines and dogmas, the overburden, signifies as the legitimate proof for the eternal soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, David McNeill illuminates Plato&’s distinctive approach to philosophy by examining how his literary portrayal of Socrates manifests an essential interdependence between philosophic and ethical inquiry. In particular, McNeill demonstrates how Socrates&’s confrontation with profound ethical questions about his public philosophic activity is the key to understanding the distinctively mimetic, dialogic, and reflexive character of Socratic philosophy. Taking a cue from Nietzsche&’s account of &“the problem of Socrates,&” McNeill shows how the questions Nietzsche raises are questions that, in Plato's depiction, Socrates was aware of and responded to. McNeill also shows how the Republic provides a view of Socratic moral psychology that resembles Nietzsche&’s account of human psychology: it deals with the internalized ethical narratives and justificatory schemes through which human beings orient themselves to their world. McNeill argues that this moral psychology not only determines Socrates&’s explicit account of different character types and political regimes but also crucially informs his dialectical engagements with his various interlocutors in the dialogues. In addition to contributing a unique perspective to current debates about Socrates&’s philosophic methods and the significance of the literary character of Plato&’s dialogues, the book offers a far-reaching interpretation of Plato&’s presentation of the theoretical and practical activities of the fifth-century Sophists. And in showing how Plato responds to &“modern&” theoretical challenges, McNeill provides new evidence to question standard views of the differences between ancient and modern conceptions of the self, society, and nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between Plato's views on psychology and his political philosophy, focusing on his reflections on the spirited part of the tripartite soul, or thumos, and spirited motivation over the course of his career. Spirit is the distinctively social or political part of the human soul for Plato, in the sense that it is the source of the desires, emotions, and sensitivities that make it possible for people to form relationships with one another, interact politically, and cooperate together in and protect their communities. Such emotions prominently include not only the aggressive or competitive qualities for which thumos is well known, but also the feelings of attachment, love, friendship, and civic fellowship that bind families and communities together and make cities possible in the first place. Moreover, as spirit is the political part of the soul in this sense, two social and political challenges that occupy Plato throughout his works--namely, how to educate citizens properly in virtue and how to maintain unity and stability in political communities--cannot be addressed and resolved, on his view, without proper attention to the spirited aspects of human psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Luria (1534-1572) is one of the most extraordinary and influential mystical figures in the history of Judaism, a visionary teacher who helped shape the course of nearly all subsequent Jewish mysticism. Given his importance, it is remarkable that this is the first scholarly work on him in English. Most studies of Lurianic Kabbalah focus on Luria’s mythic and speculative ideas or on the ritual and contemplative practices he taught. The central premise of this book is that Lurianic Kabbalah was first and foremost a lived and living phenomenon in an actual social world. Thus the book focuses on Luria the person and on his relationship to his disciples. What attracted Luria’s students to him? How did they react to his inspired and charismatic behavior? And what roles did Luria and his students see themselves playing in their collective quest for repair of the cosmos and messianic redemption?
