Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve Sri Lankan Alfisols were characterized for P. Soils were incubated for three weeks with sufficient P applied (P2) to elevate soil solution P to 0.2 ug P/g solution as determined by sorption curves, with 75 percent of P2 (P1), and without P (P0). For PO treatments, (a) organic P, (b) 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable "labile" inorganic P, (c) 0.1 M NaOH extractable "moderately labile" inorganic P, and (d) concentrated HC1 extractable residual P fractions contained 44, 10, 13, and 22 % of total P respectively. Fifty five percent of applied P (P1 and P2) was recovered in the inorganic 0.5 M NaHCO3 fraction and 25 percent in the inorganic 0.1 M NaOH fraction. Significant amounts of applied P were recovered in the organic fractions of some soils. Factor analysis of PO treatment fractionation data suggested that inorganic and organic fractions were separate equilibrium systems. Both inorganic and organic systems, however, contributed significantly to P uptake in a Neubauer experiment. Moreover, applied fertilizer P appeared to increase contributions of organic P to P uptake. Correlation of Neubauer plant uptake data to Olsen, Bray 1, Bray 2, CAL, and Double acid extractable soil P showed that P uptake was most highly correlated to Double acid extractable P. Regression analysis suggested that the higher correlation was due to the Double acid extractant's ability to measure the organic P contribution to P uptake. Phosphorus sorption by the soils ranged from low to medium and was described satisfactorily by either the Langmuir two surface or the Freundlich equation but not by the Langmuir one surface equation. Correlation analysis indicated that oxalate extractable Fe was the soil component most active in P sorption. Although organic matter and pH were correlated to sorption capacity and may have been directly involved in the P sorption mechanisms they could also have covaried with other components responsible for sorption. Although citrate-dithionite extractable Fe did not appear to be involved in P sorption its high correlation with residual P fractions suggests an involvement with "slow" sorption. Phosphorous sorption had no apparent influence on P uptake by foxtail millet from the 12 soils in a Neubauer experiment.

Book excerpt: Arable land is a major diffuse source of P loads to surface waters. The main processes for P losses from agricultural fields are erosion, surface runoff and subsurface leaching. To identify agricultural soils vulnerable to P losses, it is necessary to understand the processes behind these losses. This thesis mainly concerns processes influencing subsurface leaching. Phosphorus sorption and accumulation were studied in the laboratory to evaluate how these processes affect the release of P, which potentially can be leached. Furthermore, P leaching from undisturbed soil cores exposed to natural conditions was studied. All studies were performed on soils from the Swedish long-term fertility experiment, which includes soil types common in southern and central Sweden, each with four soil P levels. P sorption capacity in the soils studied ranged from 6.0 to 12.2 mmol kg-1 soil and was correlated with the amounts of oxalate extractable Fe and Al in the soils. Phosphorus release was correlated with soil test P values (STP) for individual soils, but STP could not explain P release when soils with different P sorption capacities were considered. Instead, estimates of P sorption saturation using a ratio of STP and P sorption capacity proved to be useful for assessing P release. Long-term inorganic P fertilization of 42 to 49 kg P ha-1yr-1 for more than 30 years caused P accumulation down to 40 cm depth in the soil profiles. Below this depth no differences in P properties were found between fertilized and non-fertilized soils. Total P losses from the lysimeters ranged from 0.03 to 1.09 kg ha-1yr-1 and were not correlated with either STP or P sorption saturation. Total P leaching was greatest from a soil in which macropore flow dominated water transport, irrespective of STP. In another soil, with low P sorption capacity, P sorption saturation and P leaching were high from the highest fertilized treatment. In the remaining soils, P sorption and release processes in the subsoils in

Book Synopsis Removal of Phosphates by Sorption on Activated Alumina by : Krishnier Purushothaman
Download or read book Removal of Phosphates by Sorption on Activated Alumina written by Krishnier Purushothaman and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the investigation was to study the removal of phosphorus from waste water by sorption on activated alumina, and determine the capacity of the alumina to sorb phosphates in the presence of other ions, the effect of the influent flow rate and phosphorus concentration on the efficiency of the process, and the feasibility of regeneration of the used alumina. The studies were conducted using deionized and tap water to which inorganic phosphate had been added, and secondary effluent from bench-scale activated sludge units. They involved batch tests employing three types of activated alumina, ALCOA XM (minus 325 mesh), F-1 (minus 100 mesh), and F-1 (28-48 mesh), and continuous-flow tests carried out in three specially designed glass sorption columns using the F-1 (28-48) alumina. Activated alumina was found to have a greater capacity for removing phosphorus in the presence of hardness-causing ions, and each type of alumina had a different capacity for each test water used. The fraction of phosphorus removed by each alumina decreased when the initial phosphorus concentration in the test water increased. The influent flow rate inversely affected the phosphorus loading capacity of the alumina, and the used aluminas could be effectively regenerated with a 2M sodium hydroxide solution along.
