Download or read book Sorghum's Galaxy Gazettes written by Dianne Brown and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you explain the unexplainable when there are no words or colors to describe the transformation of a starwalker? For Diana Sue, who retired from the art scene years ago, the change was a long and arduous journey, weighing in the balance scale all that she had been taught to believe and hold true. Through the efforts of her Galaxy Gazettes, she could feel the hard shell of her chrysalis breaking off in pieces and crumbling on the ground. Inside that hard shell was a mulch-like soup of old beliefs and paradigms that would produce her emergence as a new creature.Sorghum's Galaxy Gazettes are streaming, soul-changing tales told in symbolic form. The Gazettes have a wide distribution along the many ports of trade in the Milky Way. The Galaxy Alliance Treaty Organization (GATO) closely monitors Diana's progress in her discovery of her true identity. Sorghum--Sirius C--is held in high regard by GATO for its exports as well as being Diana's inheritance.Accompanied by Imagines (pronounced i-mah-ja-nees), Diana Sue finds herself traveling the Milky Way galaxy with her handsome navigator. She discovers a surprising and ageless relationship between them that began long before her birth on Earth. Throughout their travels, they form an even stronger bond. Under the tutelage of Imagines and along with several other unexpected--maybe startling--characters, Diana Sue uncovers a new sense of purpose not only on Earth but also for her future on Sorghum.

Book Synopsis Atlas of Butterflies and Diurnal Moths in the Monsoon Tropics of Northern Australia by : Michael Braby
Download or read book Atlas of Butterflies and Diurnal Moths in the Monsoon Tropics of Northern Australia written by Michael Braby and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Australia is one of few tropical places left on Earth in which biodiversity—and the ecological processes underpinning that biodiversity—is still relatively intact. However, scientific knowledge of that biodiversity is still in its infancy and the region remains a frontier for biological discovery. The butterfly and diurnal moth assemblages of the area, and their intimate associations with vascular plants (and sometimes ants), exemplify these points. However, the opportunity to fill knowledge gaps is quickly closing: proposals for substantial development and exploitation of Australia’s north will inevitably repeat the ecological devastation that has occurred in temperate southern Australia—loss of species, loss of ecological communities, fragmentation of populations, disruption of healthy ecosystem function and so on—all of which will diminish the value of the natural heritage of the region before it is fully understood and appreciated. Written by several experts in the field, the main purpose of this atlas is to compile a comprehensive inventory of the butterflies and diurnal moths of northern Australia to form the scientific baseline against which the extent and direction of change can be assessed in the future. Such information will also assist in identifying the region’s biological assets, to inform policy and management agencies and to set priorities for biodiversity conservation.

Book Synopsis Collateral Values by : Todd R. Lookingbill
Download or read book Collateral Values written by Todd R. Lookingbill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unanticipated benefits that may arise after wars and conflicts, showing how the preservation of battlefields and the establishment of borderlands can create natural capital in the former landscapes of war. The editors call this Collateral Value, in contrast to the collateral damage that war inflicts upon infrastructure, natural capital, and human capital. The book includes case studies recounting successes and failures, opportunities and risks, and ambitious proposals. The book is organized in two sections. The first visits U.S., English, and French battlefield sites dating from medieval England to World War I. The second explores borderlands located on several continents, established to end or prevent conflict. Both of these can create value beyond their original purpose, by preserving natural areas and restoring biodiversity. Among the topics covered are: · Registering English Battlefields · Old forts and new amenities in the Southern Plains of the U.S. · Verdun, France, and the conservation of WWI cultural and natural heritage · Conservation lessons learned in the Cordillera del Condor Corridor of the Andes mountains · Korea’s DMZ and its nature preserve · Wakhan National Park, a mountainous buffer area between Afghanistan and Pakistan The book examines state-of-the-art applications of landscape ecology, including methods for change detection, connectivity analysis, and the quantification of ecosystem services. Also included is a chapter on a creative proposal for “Guantánamo 2.0,” which would transform the Gitmo detention facility into a peace park and ecological research center. A concluding chapter appraises the past, present, and future of Collateral Values. Collateral Values: The Natural Capital Created by Landscapes of War benefits a broad audience of advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practicing professionals.
Download or read book Liberal Barbarism written by E. Ringmar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Liberal Barbarism, Erik Ringmar sets out to explain the 1860 destruction of Yuanmingyuan - the Chinese imperial palace north-west of Beijing - at the hands of British and French armies. Yuanmingyuan was the emperor's own theme-park, a perfect world, a vision of paradise, which housed one of the greatest collections of works of art ever assembled. The intellectual puzzle which the book addresses concerns why the Europeans, bent on "civilizing" the Chinese, engaged in this act of barbarism. The answer is provided through an analysis of the performative aspect of the confrontation between Europe and China, focusing on the differences in the way their respective international systems were conceptualized. Ringmar reveals that the destruction of Yuanmingyuan represented the Europeans' campaign to "shock and awe" the Chinese, thereby forcing them to give up their way of organizing international relations. The contradictions which the events of 1860 exemplify - the contradiction between civilization and barbarism - is a theme running through all European (and North American) relations with the rest of the world since, including, most recently, the US war in Iraq.
