Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul is a larger-than-life figure within the Christian world, and his letter to the believers in Rome is considered his most important writing. Powerful and passionate, The Law and the Spirit of Life offers a fresh and broadly researched perspective on the book of Romans. More than just a study of the biblical text, this enlightening book engages in a study of the studies on Paul and this epistle. Bill Blackmon takes readers on a geographical, historical, and theological journey, answering questions such as: Why did God direct Paul to write this letter? What was its primary purpose? As the author definitively establishes, Romans embodies the core of the Christian faith, and without it, the Church would not exist as it does today. Inviting a myriad of voices to contribute their insights to the study, Dr. Blackmon crafts a valuable resource for all those—clergy or laity, believer or not—who want to deepen their understanding of God and His salvation offered to humanity.

This book will give you insights to deal with these questions and more. Book excerpt: According to Webster's dictionary a crisis is a “decisive moment or an unstable or crucial time or state of affairs” in history. It is fashionable to suggest the early 21st century is a time of crisis. We are told by our leadership that crisis is on every hand. Indeed, when crisis does not materialize as quickly or as violently as one might expect, it seems civil leadership is not averse to creating “crisis.” However, we are in the midst of crisis. The situation we face today is not economic, environmental, political or sociological. Instead, it is a crisis of leadership at the most elementary level. It is a crisis requiring a dramatic cultural shift in order to correct the course of history. As things now stand we are headed for disaster. Indeed, we are experiencing the slow unfolding of disaster all around us even today.

Book excerpt: Within the Christian community at large there is often little correlation between scriptural guidelines for Christian living and the lifestyle practices and behavior of believers. Christian social scientist, George Barna, has done extensive research in this area that reveals alarming data. For example, nearly nine of ten adults state that religious faith is very important in their lives. However, only one in five adults claims that the Bible is the dominant influence in their decisions regarding lifestyle practices. Further research suggests that there is often little difference between the lifestyle practices of Christians and non-Christians. This nominal difference in lifestyle practices and behavior between Christians and non-Christians, as well as the minimal correlation between Scripture and practice among many Christians, produced an interest in this area of practical theology. Serving as a Christian pastor over the past two decades, the reality of Barnas research has been observed personally. The biblical parallel of the prevailing apathy within todays churches is seen in Judges 21:25 (NASB), In those days there was no king in Israel, everyone did what was right in his own eyes. That is, in those days there was no accepted standard of truth. Likewise, only one in four American adults believes in the existence of absolute truth. As a result, the relationship between doctrine and practice, belief and behavior, is often minimal, with many Christians doing only what is right in their own eyes, rather than allowing Gods Word to influence their mode of living. A distinct relationship between belief and behavior is seen in I Timothy 4:16. In this passage, Paul clearly identifies a correlation between what one believes (doctrine) and the lifestyle (behavior) one lives when he writes, Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. From this verse it is clear that there are two areas in the life of the Christian that need to be scrutinized and pursued, namely, belief and behavior. The fundamental thesis of this book is that a deeper understanding of Christian ethics will inform and facilitate the Christian life.

Book excerpt: The third millennium. It's a time of tremendous opportunity for the church--and tremendous challenge. More than ever, pastors need a model for ministry that can equip them for the rigors of a restless, increasingly secularized culture. In the 21st Century Pastor, David Fisher explores the apostle Paul's concept of ministry to offer a paradigm that is both biblical and relevant. Paul's view is fleshed out with examples from Fisher's own twenty-five years of pastoral experience, presenting a roadmap for today's pastor that is scholarly, practical, dynamic, and inspiring. The 21st Century Pastor first addressees crucial issues of pastoral identity, the significance of geography, time, and ecclesiology. It then explores Paul's metaphors for ministry (jars of clay, farmers and builders, servants and stewards, and others) to reveal an accurate portrait of an effective, biblical pastor--the kind who will speak to the heart of modern culture rather than languish on its fringes. Filling the rare role of a pastor to pastors, Fisher's sage insights help pastors answer their own identity questions, empowering them to minister to a deeply needy society. Says Fisher, "Pastors who know what time it is will, in the name and power of God, create communities of faith where the values of the Gospel are embraced, taught, and lived out."

Book excerpt: Dr. Dale Fife, author of The Secret Place, takes readers on a visionary journey into the inner sanctum of God’s presence to experience the mysteries and revelation that Dr. Fife has found through intimate communion with the Father. Moses encountered the light and fire of the burning bush. On their way to the Promised Land, the Israelites followed a pillar of smoke by day and a pillar of fire by night. The priests of God ministered in the temple with the flame of a lampstand as their only source of light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). God wants all believers to walk in that same light of supernatural revelation. He wants you to transcend human limitations and access the divine realm. Open your spirit to receive fresh illumination, for you are about to have an intimate encounter with The Light Giver.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his experience as a member of the clergy and the questions and concerns that arose in the course of ministering to congregants, Robert London Smith, Jr. explores exactly what function the black church performs and, importantly, why. In this provocative work, he argues that much black church praxis is less authentic, relevant, and constructive today because it continues to be implicated by certain values and meanings that are themselves rooted in a historical black thematic universe that is fading and being replaced by a new set of values and meanings located within a contemporary black thematic universe. Using a practical theology method, Smith develops a theological framework (context-praxis) to create an approach to understanding and creating an informed praxis for the black church. He then sets forth a bold project that calls for the critical engagement of black church praxis and what he calls the black thematic universe in its historical and contemporary manifestations. The goal is to transform this praxis so that it remains authentic to the Gospel and the religious traditions and history of those who come to interpret and live out its message in the world, while being relevant to the issues and challenges of the present historical context in which the black church lives out its meaning and purpose, and constructive for the building up and equipping of the Body of Christ. Smith's creation of a black existential and theological hermeneutic is an approach that moves toward the realization of this ambitious goal. This book challenges many traditional views of black church praxis, including pastoral care, worship, and fellowship, and creates a space for a renewed and much-needed dialogue about the acts of the black church within contemporary America. As such, it is an important text for students of practical theology and African American religion as well as those interested in developing a critical understanding of the implications of the intersection of faith and culture.

Church leaders will learn how to avoid some of the common mistakes that turn ministry into misery. Whether or not you have had formal training, Dr. Hughes’ insights will help pastors from any denomination avoid the pitfalls that cause ministers to quit or derail their success in the ministry. Regardless of whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned church leader, anyone called to Christian ministry will be informed and enriched by Dr. Hughes’ priceless jewels for practical church leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After many years of forced assimilation policies, numerous broken treaties, and failed government policies, Native Americans are still fighting for respect and equal rights in the United States. American Indian reservations in the United States resemble third world countries, with high poverty rates, increasing unemployment, environmental disasters and major health problems such as diabetes and alcoholism. In addition, racism is still prevalent for Native Americans today. Reservation lands are often isolated, and present little or no opportunities, and they have poor infrastructure, inadequate housing, and the schools have lower than average educational standards. Therefore, Native Americans often must leave the reservation in search of education and better vocational opportunities if they are to succeed in mainstream society. However, in doing so, they may lose touch with their culture, their language, and their traditional way of life. The poor conditions on the reservations may actually stand in stark contrast for those who live off the reservations, or live in larger metropolitan areas. Native Americans living off the reservation may have a better than average chance at education and job opportunities. However, almost all Native Americans still find that they are victims of ridicule as schools and professional sports teams continue to utilise Native American images, logos, and racist team mascots as their symbols. This book investigates the social problems and the status of Native Americans in the United States in the twenty-first century. It identifies and describes the social problems faced by Native Americans today, and brings up a valuable argument: have the Native Americans really assimilated?

Book excerpt: Throughout biblical history, God's people have experienced transitions that challenged their current state and pointed toward a future that wanted to happen in the eternal purposes of God. The nascent 21st century is just such a time. Tectonic cultural shifts are creating tsunamis of uncertainty and disillusionment that strain our institutions, expose our divisions, and test the Church's readiness to lead. Always, such breakpoints demand a revived focus and renewed dedication to the truth--in our case, a devotion to the ancient and unchanging truths upon which Christ built His Church. As was true at previous junctures, the current transition is revealing a vanguard company of men and women who, amid upheaval and disorientation, understand the times and know what to do (1 Chron. 12:32). In Dead Prophets Society, Dr. Mark Chironna speaks to the legacy of Issachar and its place in the 21st-century Church. Methodically and scripturally, he describes how modern sons and daughters of Issachar will do what Issachar has always done: arise to the high call of God, labor on the living edge of what He is doing, and serve as His instrument of recovery and restoration, His vital, authentic, and overcoming Church.

Book excerpt: One of Israel’s most successful venture capitalists uses the words and actions of the Hebrew patriarchs to lay the foundations for a modern growth economy based on timeless business principles and values. Entrepreneurs, businessmen, and investors are constantly looking for principles and rules that will pave the way for success. Usually, those at the forefront are successful entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley or legendary Wall Street investors. But the principles of economic growth, wealth creation and preservation were written long before the rise of the modern market economy and its heroes. Michael Eisenberg—one of the most successful venture capitalists in Israel, and one of the first investors in Lemonade, and Wix—reveals in The Tree of Life and Prosperity the eternal principles for successful business, economics, and negotiation hidden in the Torah—and shows their relevance to the modern world we live in.
