But Alkaia finds something unique in the shaman and decides to rescue him from certain death, going against her tribe's laws. When she gives birth to twins, her tribe is free to punish her for her sins. She is exiled with the son she bore and nothing to help them survive the wilderness. They think her death is inevitable. The wolves who close in on her think her death is inevitable. But in the darkness, it's that shaman's voice that sings to her and gives her strength. If she's to survive, she'll have to use the newborn she bore him to turn the odds in her favor. If she ends up dead, it won't be because she didn't go down fighting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dive into this back story fantasy novella from the Witches of Etlantium series and find a wounded hero doing his best to protect the ones he loves. From urban fantasy author Thea Atkinson, this dark tale has plenty of strong characters. He knows the spoils of war well...now he's one of them. Theron's days of peace are over when a legion of female warriors demand his village's best men as pillage. His good looks and keen intellect catch the eye of the commander. In return for his beloved witch's safety, he volunteers to be taken, and only discovers too late that the warriors have only one use for men. And now it's not just his life at stake, because if he can't give the women what they want, his entire village will suffer. Theron's Tale is a novella in the Witches of Etlantium series. It's not light and fluffy, but if you love dark lil ditties, you'll enjoy this expansion on a favorite character. ***WARNING*** Some scenes may prove a bit too dark for some readers.

Gods and the Dust collects numerous stories from the ancient source material and strings them together into one fluid plot, fleshing out the sparse details into a dramatic fantasy novel. At the dawn of time, the Earth and Sky mated to populate the world. Their most powerful children are the gods and goddesses - living personifications of all things great and small, physical and conceptual. These powerful deities engage in an interconnected string of relationships and misadventures involving mortals and immortals, dispensing wrath and favor in equal measure, resulting in murders, love affairs, offspring, and wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complexities of women’s lives in Africa and the transnational spaces of Europe and North America through the literary works of key African women writers. Using a postcolonial analytical framework, the book highlights the commonalities of African women’s identities and experiences across national, ethnic, linguistic, and religious boundaries in Africa and in western settings. It collates the multi-regional narratives of key African women writers who convey how women’s lives are shaped by social, economic, and political factors at home and abroad. It also illustrates the intersection of ethnicity, class, and gender that flows through all the texts examined. Unlike existing works that explore African women’s fiction, this book uncovers the transformation from postcolonial themes of nationhood to global modalities of post-independence writing through the lens of gender. The book engages with feminist expression through broad themes including religion, war and ethnic conflict, women’s status in society, tradition and modernity and local and global tensions. A unique approach to literary criticism of Anglophone African women’s writing, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the field of African Literature, African Studies, Women’s Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Cultural and Ethnic Studies and Migration and Diaspora Studies.

Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning author of Europe Central – a dazzling fictional account of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians In this fifth installment in his acclaimed Seven Dreams series of novels examining the collisions between Native Americans and European colonizers, William T. Vollmann tells the story of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians, with flashbacks to the Civil War. Defrauded and intimidated at every turn, the Nez Perces finally went on the warpath in 1877, subjecting the U.S. Army to its greatest defeat since Little Big Horn the previous year, as they fled from northeast Oregon across Montana to the Canadian border. Vollmann’s main character is not the legendary Chief Joseph but his pursuer, General Oliver Otis Howard, the brave, shy, tormented, devoutly Christian Civil War veteran. In this novel, we see him as commander, father, son, husband, friend, and killer. Teeming with many vivid characters on both sides of the conflict, and written in an original style in which the printed page works as a stage with multiple layers of foreground and background, The Dying Grass is another mesmerizing achievement from one of the most ambitious writers of our time.
