Book excerpt: First presented as miraculously rediscovered Greek erotic poetry, the Songs of Bilitis were infact the work of French author Pierre Louÿs - nevertheless, they were acclaimed for their sensual style and beauty. The frank depictions of lesbianism in the context of classical Greece were a marriage of two trends popular in late 19th century France. Homosexuality in literature was a novel subject hitherto considered tantalizing and taboo, while the artistic and aesthetic culture of antiquity received homage from several realms of creativity. Louÿs offers a frank presentation of a lesbian couple in Greece, embarking on a journey of sexual discovery and enjoyment tempered by the traumatic experiences of Bilitis. Through her sexuality, Bilitis is shown to mature emotionally, her lesbianism proving a catalyst for physical and mental change. The transience of love and sexual experience, the wisdom gained from her indulgence, and the emotive depth of passion, longing and eventual estrangement construct the essence of Louÿs' personal, expressive growth. Popular with audiences and the lesbian community for decades, this 1926 English edition of the Songs of Bilitis contains 30 illustrations by Willy Pogany.

Book excerpt: The Songs of Bilitis - Pierre Louys - The Songs of Bilitis ( French: Les Chansons de Bilitis) is a collection of erotic, essentially lesbian, poetry by Pierre Louÿs published in Paris in 1894. Since Louÿs claimed that he had translated the original poetry from Ancient Greek, this work is considered a pseudotranslation. The poems were actually clever fabulations, authored by Louÿs himself, and are still considered important literature. The poems are in the manner of Sappho; the collection's introduction claims they were found on the walls of a tomb in Cyprus, written by a woman of Ancient Greece called Bilitis, a courtesan and contemporary of Sappho to whose life Louÿs dedicated a small section of the book. On publication, the volume deceived even expert scholars. Louÿs claimed the 143 prose poems, excluding 3 epitaphs, were entirely the work of this ancient poet—a place where she poured both her most intimate thoughts and most public actions, from childhood innocence in Pamphylia to the loneliness and chagrin of her later years. Although for the most part The Songs of Bilitis is original work, many of the poems were reworked epigrams from the Palatine Anthology, and Louÿs even borrowed some verses from Sappho herself. The poems are a blend of mellow sensuality and polished style in the manner of Parnassianism, but underneath run subtle Gallic undertones that Louÿs could never escape. To lend authenticity to the forgery, Louÿs in the index listed some poems as "untranslated"; he even craftily fabricated an entire section of his book called "The Life of Bilitis", crediting a certain fictional archaeologist Herr G. Heim ("Mr. C. Cret" in German) as the discoverer of Bilitis' tomb. And though Louÿs displayed great knowledge of Ancient Greek culture, ranging from children's games in "Tortie Tortue" to application of scents in "Perfumes", the literary fraud was eventually exposed. This did little, however, to taint their literary value in readers' eyes, and Louÿs' open and sympathetic celebration of lesbian sexuality earned him sensation and historic significance.

This book undertakes to demonstrate that thesis by studying Debussy's settings of songs by Banville, Verlaine, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Louÿs, and Debussy himself. A particular insight may be gained in the comparison of six poems by Verlaine set to music by both Fauré and Debussy. The book includes a poetic/musical analysis of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, based on the poem by Mallarmé.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Songs of Bilitis: Translated From the Greek; Put Into English From the French Notwithstanding the weighty argument and the learned polemics of the distinguished professor in Gottingen, who in 1896 took up arms in learned protest against this collection of pictures of ancient Greek life, told in exquisitely beautiful modern French, and who sought, with it as a text, to bring forward an unnecessary defence of the character of that wonderful priestess and inspiratrice, Sappho, the translator has felt that such a protest and such a de fence were unnecessary, and has believed that the beauty of the pictures presented by many of the songs is sufficient excuse for their existence, in spite of the marked flavor Of sexualism that detracts from, while it does not embellish, the idea sought to be presented. The most enthusiastic defender of the ancients is bound to admit that the pure sexualism and the various forms of sexual degeneracy described in these poems do not furnish an overdrawn picture of the social conditions among the Greeks at the period de scribed; and while there is always a grave questionfor moralists and regulators of social ethics, concerning the advisability of informing the public as to the facts in this respect, the translator believes that public edu cation has so tempered the minds of the majority of the people of this country, that a book Of this charac ter can safely be placed in their hands without harm to individuals and without producing any general per version of public morals or of public conduct. Sweet one, --my kisses reach far, and should satisfy thy love. Lightly will I touch thy breasts and arms with my tongue and lips, and behind thine ears, and upon thy neck I will leave the marks of my kisses; and while I kiss thee my hands shall stray in mad delight over the ivory nakedness of thy sensitive body, trembling under the touch of my nails. Listen, Mnasidika! Hear the murmuring of my love in thine ears, like the wild humming of the sea. Mnasidika, thy look drives me mad; I will close thy burning eyes with a kiss, as if they were thy lips. JEALOUS THOUGHTS HOU needst not dress thine hair, for fear lest the hot iron scorch thy neck, or burn thy black locks. Thou shouldst let it hang upon thy shoulders and spread out over the length of thine arms. Thou needst not dress thyself, lest thy close girdle should redden the folds of the skin over thy hips. Better shouldst thou rest naked like a little girl. It is not even best that thou shouldst rise, for fear that thy delicate feet should be bruised in walking. Thou shouldst repose in thy bed, oh victim of Eros, and I will dress thy poor wound. For I could not bear to see upon thy body other marks, Mnasidika, than the purple of a kiss too long prolonged, the trace of a sharp nail, or the reddening line of my passionate embrace. THE DESPAIRING EMBRACE OVE me, not with smiles, or with flutes, or with the plaited flowers, but with thy heart and with thy tears, even as I love thee with my sorrowing breast, and my moans. When thy breasts alternate with my breasts, when I feel thy life touch my life, when thy knees stand up behind me, then my panting mouth knows not more how to join itself to thine. Press me to thee as I press thee to me! See, the lamp has died..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Debussy's Paris was factionalized, politicized, and litigious. It was against this background of ferment and change--which characterized French society and music from the Franco-Prussian War to World War I--that Debussy re-thought music. This book captures the complexity of the composer's restless personal and artistic identity within the new picture emerging of the musical, social, and political world of fin-de-siècle Paris. Debussy's setting did not simply mold his style. Rather, it challenged him to define a style and then to revamp it again and again as he situated himself simultaneously via the present and the past. These essays trace Debussy's perpetual reinvention, both social and creative, from his earliest to his last works. They explore tensions and contradictions in his best-known compositions and examine lesser-known pieces that reveal new aspects of Debussy's creative appropriation from poetry, painting, and non-Western music. The contributors reveal the extent to which Debussy's personal and professional lives were intertwined and sometimes in conflict. Belonging to no one group or class, but crossing many, Debussy abjured the orthodox. A maverick who reviled all convention and searched for a music that authentically reflected experience, Debussy balked at entering any situation--salons, musical societies, or factions--that would categorize and thus distort him. Because of this, music lovers still argue over the degree to which Debussy's music is Impressionist, symbolist, or even French. Aptly, the volume's editor reads Debussy's last works as a dialogue with himself that reflects his inherently pluralistic, paradoxical, negotiated, and ever-changing identity. William Austin's description of Debussy as ''one of the most original and adventurous musicians who ever lived'' is often repeated. This book illustrates how right Austin was and shows why Debussy's unclassifiable art continues to fascinate and perplex his historians even as it enthralls new listeners. The contributors are Leon Botstein, Christophe Charle, John Clevenger, Jane F. Fulcher, David Grayson, Brian Hart, Gail Hilson-Woldu, and Marie Rolf.
