Book excerpt: Excerpt from Song and Legend From the Middle Ages The aim of this little book is to give general readers some idea of the subject and spirit of European Continental literature in the later and culminating period of the Middle Ages - the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries. It goes without saying that translations and selections are, in general, inadequate to the satisfactory representation of any literature. No piece of writing, of course, especially no piece of poetry, can be perfectly rendered into another tongue; no piece of writing can be fairly represented by detached portions. But to the general English reader Continental Mediaeval literature, so long as it remains in the original tongues, is inaccessible; and translations of many entire works are not within easy reach. What translation and selection can do in this case, is to put into the hands of the ordinary student of the Middle Ages sufficient material for forming an estimate of the subjects that interested the mediaeval mind and the spirit in which they were treated. And this is what the general reader desires. Matters of form and expression - the points that translation cannot reproduce - belong, of course, to the specialist. The claim that so slender a volume of selections can represent even the subject and spirit of so vast a body of literature, is saved from being unreasonable or presumptuous by a consideration of the fact that, from causes easy to trace, the national literatures of Continental Europe had many common characteristics: the range of subjects was not unlimited; the spirit is the same in all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages Egend is' not history; but in legend we find embodied historical truths, manners and customs of past ages, beliefs and superstitions otherwise long forgotten. Of which history itself takes no account. Legend has preserved for us, maybe in romantic dress, maybe' under altered names and circumstances, stirringgpictures of heroes and heroines, who once have lived and suffered, fought and conquered, or have faced death with' trustful courage; pictures, too, of men of equal prowess, as strong in evil as in might, who, victorious for a time, have yet ever met a stronger power than theirs, stronger in virtue, stronger in might. Book excerpt: She is Elaine of Ascolat, the Lady of Shalott. At sixteen, Elaine is beautiful and brave, with a temperament as fiery as her long red hair. She lives on Arthur's army base with her father and brothers, the sole girl in a militaristic world of men. As she mends torn battle garments and heals wounds, Elaine often slips into daydreams, wishing the handsome Lancelot would see her as more than a tomboy. Then a new girl arrives, and Elaine is thrilled-- until Gwynivere proves to be cold and cruel. But when the two of them are thrown into a situation of gravest danger, they must band together in order to survive. Can Elaine find the strength to fight for the kingdom she has always believed in? This highly acclaimed novel is a beautiful contribution to the Camelot canon.

Book excerpt: This superb collection of medieval myths and legends, including those of Beowulf, Charlemagne, Siegfried, Arthur and Guinevere, Merlin, Tristan and Iseult, El Cid, and Reynard the Fox, come down to us from the bards and minstrels who traveled from castle to village, entertaining their audiences with tales of heroic exploits. Not only do these stories still have the power to move and amuse us, they are valuable for what they reveal of European cultures in the Middle Ages. Typically, the medieval romance and other kinds of myth and legend from this period offer a heady mix of Christian and pagan elements, reflecting both the passing of an ancient culture and the arrival of a new order. Stories of the Crusades perhaps best illuminate the transition. Not purely legend, not really history, they often involve pagan heroes reshaped to fit tales of knighthood and Christian endeavor. In many, the Holy Grail may be the object of diligent search, but magic and witchcraft are still very much in evidence. The mythic qualities and colorful subject matter of the stories have long exerted a powerful influence on Western art, music, and literature. Folklorist and mythologist H.A. Guerber's splendid retelling of these myths is preceded by her enlightening introduction to their cultural and historical roots. The illustrations included in this edition--by such well-known artists and illustrators as Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Willy Pogany--are engaging proof of their power to inspire.

Read as an allegory of God’s love for Israel, the Church, or individual believers, it became one of the most influential texts from the Bible. This volume includes twenty-three essays that cover the Song’s reception history from antiquity to the present. They illuminate the richness of this reception history, paying attention to diverse interpretations in commentaries, sermons, and other literature, as well as the Song’s impact on spirituality, theological and intellectual debates, and the arts.

Book excerpt: Where was the line between pleasure and irritation in the sensory overload caused by the sounds, colours, and smells of a medieval market? How could pain and suffering be relieved by hoping for, and desiring to experience, an intimate, almost familiar, contact with Christ? This volume shows the different aspects of sensory experiences that medieval people conveyed through documents, literary accounts, and religious practices. The unifying theme here is how pleasure, pain, desire, and fear appear in different—sometimes conflicting—combinations and settings: from the private space of the monastic cell to the shared hustle of the market. The geographic focus of this volume is Mediterranean Europe, although it also touches on other Western contexts. The combination of different points of view here provides an original contribution to the study of sensory experiences in the Middle Ages.
