Book Synopsis Violin and Keyboard: From the seventeenth century to Mozart by : Abram Loft
Download or read book Violin and Keyboard: From the seventeenth century to Mozart written by Abram Loft and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1991 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wonderful book is written for musicians seeking to build or extend a sonata repertoire. Analyses are given of both well-known and many lesser-known pieces of music, with recommendations on performance as well as descriptions of difficulties. Many are suitable for student or amateur musicians. This is mainly a book for violinists, though; many of the keyboard parts of these pieces are little more than continuo accompaniment. The second volume, detailing the music of Beethoven onward, contains descriptions of music that puts the keyboardist on more equal footing with the violinist.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach by : Robin Leaver
Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach written by Robin Leaver and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ashgate Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach provides an indispensable introduction to the Bach research of the past thirty-fifty years. It is not a lexicon providing information on all the major aspects of Bach's life and work, such as the Oxford Composer Companion: J. S. Bach. Nor is it an entry-level research tool aimed at those making a beginning of such studies. The valuable essays presented here are designed for the next level of Bach research and are aimed at masters and doctoral students, as well as others interested in coming to terms with the current state of Bach research. Each author covers three aspects within their specific subject area; firstly, to describe the results of research over the past thirty-fifty years, concentrating on the most significant and controversial, such as: the debate over Smend's NBA edition of the B minor Mass; Blume's conclusions with regard to Bach's religion in the wake of the 'new' chronology; Rifkin's one-to-a-vocal-part interpretation; the rediscovery of the Berlin Singakademie manuscripts in Kiev; the discovery of hitherto unknown manuscripts and documents and the re-evaluation of previously known sources. Secondly, each author provides a critical analysis of current research being undertaken that is exploring new aspects, reinterpreting earlier assumptions, and/or opening-up new methodologies. For example, Martin W. B. Jarvis has suggested that Anna Magdalena Bach composed the cello suites and contributed to other works of her husband - another controversial hypothesis, whose newly proposed forensic methodology requires investigation. On the other hand, research into Bach's knowledge of the Lutheran chorale tradition is currently underway, which is likely to shed more light on the composer's choices and usage of this tradition. Thirdly, each author identifies areas that are still in need of investigation and research.

Book Synopsis Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi by : Bella Brover-Lubovsky
Download or read book Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi written by Bella Brover-Lubovsky and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi incorporates an analytical study of Vivaldi's style into a more general exploration of harmonic and tonal organization in the music of the late Italian Baroque. The harmonic and tonal language of Vivaldi and his contemporaries, full of curious links between traditional modal thinking and what would later be considered common-practice major-minor tonality, directly reflects the historical circumstances of the shifting attitude toward the conceptualization of tonal space so crucial to Western art music. Vivaldi is examined in a completely new context, allowing both his prosaic and idiosyncratic sides to emerge clearly. This book contributes to a better understanding of Vivaldi's individual style, while illuminating wider processes of stylistic development and the diffusion of artistic ideas in the 18th century.

Book Synopsis Instrumental Works from the Library of the Royal Conservatories, Brussels by : Petrus Hercules Brehy
Download or read book Instrumental Works from the Library of the Royal Conservatories, Brussels written by Petrus Hercules Brehy and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brussels native Petrus Hercules Brehy (1673–1737) composed twelve sonatas for two violins, viola, basso viola, and continuo around 1715–22, and two sonatas for five instruments and continuo approximately ten years later, all during his tenure as zangmeester of the Collegiate Church of SS. Michael and Gudula. Since 1929 the autograph manuscripts have been conserved at the Library of the Royal Conservatories of Music, Brussels. Unlike Brehy’s earlier symphonias, these were not published during his lifetime and were written to be played by a mix of professional musicians, able clerics, and older choirboys. Six of the twelve sonatas for four instruments and continuo reflect the earlier polyphonic ensemble sonata da chiesa of the late seventeenth century, four feature the violin in more flamboyant soloistic passagework, and two contain elements of both idioms. The two sonates à 5 are consistent with the late Baroque international style. All the sonatas in this volume reflect the somewhat conservative religious style of a Habsburg Empire territory capital during the early eighteenth century.
Book Synopsis Sei Solo: Symbolum? by : Benjamin Jeffery Shute
Download or read book Sei Solo: Symbolum? written by Benjamin Jeffery Shute and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the jewels in the crown of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred music is its use of astonishingly subtle and complex allegorical and representational devices. But when similar devices appear in the context of one of Bach's untexted, secular, instrumental collections such as the Six Solos (sonatas and partitas) for violin, the question arises whether he might be intending to embed discernible theological significances there as well, thus infusing the secular with the sacred. Such designs would be reasonably plausible within Bach's musical, cultural, and religious context. Shute carefully investigates the extent to which musical features of the Six Solos that seem to invite theological parallels might indeed have been intended to do so. Although the precise extent of Bach's intentions cannot be ascertained with certainty, the degree of correlation among strong potential signifiers would seem to suggest that they, and many other features of the Six Solos, are best explained as the product of extensive theological-allegorical designs on Bach's part, like those evident in his texted vocal music.
