This book was released on 1995 with total page 991 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragile lives in fragile ecosystems: Feeding the world's poor from neglected rice ecosystems was the theme of the 1995 International Rice Research Conference. During the February meeting, participants assessed progress in rice research and identified new research approaches for reducing constraints and improving productivity and sustainability of less favored and fragile rice producing areas - these are the upland, rainfed lowland, and flood-prone ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Economic gains of improving soil fertility and water holding capacity with clay application: the impact of soil remediation research in northeast Thailand by : Saleth, R. M., Inocencio, A., Noble, A. D., Ruaysoongnern, S.
Download or read book Economic gains of improving soil fertility and water holding capacity with clay application: the impact of soil remediation research in northeast Thailand written by Saleth, R. M., Inocencio, A., Noble, A. D., Ruaysoongnern, S. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declining productivity of agricultural soils in Northeast Thailand is a challenge facing land managers and farmers. A program was initiated in 2002 to investigate the potential role of incorporating clay-based materials into degraded soils as a means of enhancing productivity. This research report attempts to provide an ex-post assessment of the field level impact and economic viability of this approach, using the empirically derived estimates of the average income impacts that the application of bentonite or clay technology has generated among farm communities in Northeast Thailand. From an exclusive IWMI perspective, the impact evaluation suggests that the program has a net present value (NPV) of US$0.41 million with a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 2.44 for the sample, and a NPV of US$21 million with a BCR of 75 for the region.

Book excerpt: It requires an understanding of the dynamics of geology, meteorology, hydrology, biogeography, ecology, and geomorphology, as well as the ways in which human societies theoryualize the environment (cultural geography). Thus, to a certain degree, it may be seen as a successor of physical anthropogeography (Physische Anthropogeographie) --a term coined by the Vienna Geographer Albrecht Penck in 1924-- and geographical cultural or human ecology (Harlan H. Barrows 1923).
