Book excerpt: In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression.- Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering

Book Synopsis Problems and Methods of Optimal Control by : L.D. Akulenko
Download or read book Problems and Methods of Optimal Control written by L.D. Akulenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous applications of optimal control theory have given an incentive to the development of approximate techniques aimed at the construction of control laws and the optimization of dynamical systems. These constructive approaches rely on small parameter methods (averaging, regular and singular perturbations), which are well-known and have been proven to be efficient in nonlinear mechanics and optimal control theory (maximum principle, variational calculus and dynamic programming). An essential feature of the procedures for solving optimal control problems consists in the necessity for dealing with two-point boundary-value problems for nonlinear and, as a rule, nonsmooth multi-dimensional sets of differential equations. This circumstance complicates direct applications of the above-mentioned perturbation methods which have been developed mostly for investigating initial-value (Cauchy) problems. There is now a need for a systematic presentation of constructive analytical per turbation methods relevant to optimal control problems for nonlinear systems. The purpose of this book is to meet this need in the English language scientific literature and to present consistently small parameter techniques relating to the constructive investigation of some classes of optimal control problems which often arise in prac tice. This book is based on a revised and modified version of the monograph: L. D. Akulenko "Asymptotic methods in optimal control". Moscow: Nauka, 366 p. (in Russian).

Download or read book Adaptive Systems in Control and Signal Processing 1983 written by I. D. Landau and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Systems in Control and Signal Processing 1983 is a compendium of papers presented at the International Federation of Automatic Control in San Francisco on June 20-22, 1983. One paper addresses the results through comparative alternative algorithms in adaptive control of linear time invariant and time varying systems. Another paper presents a method in computer simulation of a wide range of stable plants to achieve an alternative approach in designing an adaptive control system. The book also compares the stability and the sensitivity approach involving the design of model-reference adaptive systems. The authors involved explain that the sensitivity concept determines the "dynamic speed of adaptation," while the stability concept focuses on finding a linear compensator for any deviant signal. One paper proposes an indirect adaptive control algorithm for MIMO square full rank minimum phase systems, while another paper discusses the application of the discrete time multivariable adaptive control system, to non-minimum phase plants with an unknown dead time. This book can prove valuable to engineers and researchers of electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering. It can also be helpful for technicians and students dealing with automatic control and telecontrol.
Book Synopsis Deterministic and Stochastic Optimal Control by : Wendell H. Fleming
Download or read book Deterministic and Stochastic Optimal Control written by Wendell H. Fleming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may be regarded as consisting of two parts. In Chapters I-IV we pre sent what we regard as essential topics in an introduction to deterministic optimal control theory. This material has been used by the authors for one semester graduate-level courses at Brown University and the University of Kentucky. The simplest problem in calculus of variations is taken as the point of departure, in Chapter I. Chapters II, III, and IV deal with necessary conditions for an opti mum, existence and regularity theorems for optimal controls, and the method of dynamic programming. The beginning reader may find it useful first to learn the main results, corollaries, and examples. These tend to be found in the earlier parts of each chapter. We have deliberately postponed some difficult technical proofs to later parts of these chapters. In the second part of the book we give an introduction to stochastic optimal control for Markov diffusion processes. Our treatment follows the dynamic pro gramming method, and depends on the intimate relationship between second order partial differential equations of parabolic type and stochastic differential equations. This relationship is reviewed in Chapter V, which may be read inde pendently of Chapters I-IV. Chapter VI is based to a considerable extent on the authors' work in stochastic control since 1961. It also includes two other topics important for applications, namely, the solution to the stochastic linear regulator and the separation principle.

Download or read book Control of Complex Systems written by H. Abou-Kandil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the begining of the sixties, control theorists have developed a large body of knowledge concerning complex or large-scale systems theory. Using the state space approach, their purpose was to extend methods to cope with the increasingly sophisticated automation needs of man-made systems. Despite several remarkable contributions, and some successful applications, it can be stated that this theory has not yet become an engineering tool. On the other hand, the emergence of cheap and reliable microprocessors has profoundly transformed industrial instrumentation and control systems. Process control equipment is organized in multilevel distributed structures, closely related to the concepts introduced by complex systems control theory. This similarity should favor a fruitful intersection for practical applications. However, a gap still exists between the literature on control theory and the world of technological achievements. In the many books on complex systems, few have given attention to the technological aspects of a practical control problem. The present book is an attempt to fill this gap. To do this, it consistently reflects the viewpoints that: - Theory and technology are two indivisible facets of the same problem. -On-line implementation for real time applications is the ultimate goal of a control study.

Book Synopsis Optimal Control Using Imbedding of the Terminal Conditions by : Raymond C. Montgomery
Download or read book Optimal Control Using Imbedding of the Terminal Conditions written by Raymond C. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imbedding theory is used to construct solutions of autonomous optimal control problems with free termination time; this is accomplished by imbedding the trajectory optimization problem of interest in a continuous family of problems which are parameterized by terminal conditions. Necessary conditions are derived which determine the modifications in the control functions required when passing from the solution corresponding to one member of the family to that corresponding to another member when their terminal conditions differ infinitesimally. By continuously collapsing the terminal conditions of the family of problems onto those of the original problem while appropriately modifying the control function, the solution to the original optimization problem can be obtained. A problem is solved for finding the time-optimal maneuvers for an airplane to maneuver in such a way that the target vehicle (assumed to be nonmaneuvering) is placed in a situation favorable to deployment of the airplane's armament. The solutions to this problem are composed of both singular and nonsingular subarcs of the trajectory. Thus, the utility of imbedding in solving singular optimal control problems is illustrated.
