Only the wire-loop configuration is considered, as this array is quite standard in geothermal prospecting. Comparisons are carried out using hardware and physical considerations, a large catalog of 3-layer model curves, 2D-3D model calculations, and by comparing Fourier transforms and layered inversions of field data from the Randsburg KGRA in California. The results generally indicate that frequency-domain methods offer better resolution and more practical hardware design for long-offset shallow applications. They also have a much better backup in terms of modelling tools for interpretation and history of experience. Transient methods are better suited for deeper probing, for both long- and short-offset applications. Frequency-domain methods are limited by the primary field, which is subject to distortion from near-surface inhomogeneites; this is also the case for early-time transients. Transient measurements in late time are limited by ambient electromagnetic noise and dynamic range of receiving equipment.

Book excerpt: Extensive, wide band EM surveys were made over three previously known bedrock conductors in the Canadian Shield. The conductors varied in size from small to very large, having strike lengths of approximately 100 m., 300 m. and 2 kms. All the conductors are located in crystalline host rocks which appear to be quite resistive. They are mostly covered by overburden whose thickness and conductivity are not well known, but which probably do not exceed 15 m. and 10-2 mhos/m respectively. The characteristics of the conductors (geometry and conductance) are only partially known from drilling. The surveys were carried out with UTEM Mark II system built at the University of Toronto by Y. Lamontagne and G. F. West. The observed data were compared with the theoretical data computed by using a free-space rectangular thin plate model. The parameters of the models were adjusted, within the known geological constraints, to achieve a best fit between the model and field responses. It was apparent in each case that some aspects of the observed responses cannot be explained on the basis of the simple models. However, in all cases the response at intermediate or later delay times could be matched reasonably well with the responses computed for models whose parameters are consistent with the known geology. The present research was devoted to investigating the validity of EM interpretation methods based on the use of simple uniform models in free space. It is well known that such simple models are not valid for the geological situations that exist in some parts of the world. However, it is widely believed that such simple models are indeed valid in areas of relatively resistive host rock and overburden such as the Canadian and Baltic Shields. The three studies reported in this thesis give some qualified support to this belief in simple models. In all three cases the induced current system (at least over most of the time range studied) is believed to be basically a vortex current in the main conductor and does not involve the host rock and overburden. Considerable deviations of the observed response from that of simple model response are found at early delay times. These deviations are believed to be due to the effects of the finite thickness of the conductive zone and of a halo of poorly conducting material situated around the main core. Whatever its cause, this effect has an important bearing on the interpretation techniques. It appears that natural conductors do not have a clear inductive limit to their response as do simple models, and this makes the interpretation of size and geometry more difficult. It also means that conductivity thickness (conductance) estimates based on simple models can be erroneous (too low) unless the late stage of the time delay (or the low frequency, resistive range of the frequency response) is observed. Computer programmes were developed by extending Annan's (74) eigen function technique to compute responses for airborne, ground and drill hole EM systems in the time or frequency domain for a free space, rectangular, finite, thin sheet model. This model was then utilised to compare the responses of various recently developed time domain and multifrequency EM systems. UTEM, Crone PEM and INPUT systems were studied in the time domain. Turam loop and horizontal loop EM systems were studied in the frequency domain.

Measurements have been made in both the time and frequency domains with time domain measurements currently enjoying an advantage over frequency domain measurements for shallow applications. Application of CSEM methods is impeded by natural field, electrification, geological, cultural, and topographic noise. Lateral resolution of parameters of adjacent steeply dipping bodies and vertical resolution of parameters of adjacent beds in a flatly dipping sequence are concerns with any CSEM method. Current channeling into a localized good conductor form a surrounding, overlying, or underlying conductor poses problems for the interpreter. In selecting a transmitter-receiver configuration for CSEM in a particular application, a compromise is usually achieved between such factors as domain of data acquisition, rejection of noise, resolution, current channeling, and depth of exploration. Not surprisingly there is only marginal agreement on the optimum selection of each of these variables. However, one of the more promising techniques for application in geothermal exploration is the controlled source audiomagnetotelluric method (CSAMT).

Book excerpt: The frequency-domain marine controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) method has recently become a tool in determining subsurface resistivity related to hydrocarbon formations in the deep water environment. In shallow water, this frequency-domain method is subject to airwave saturation that severely limits sensitivity to targets at depth. It has been suggested that time-domain CSEM may offer an improved resolution to these deep targets, as well as increased sensitivity to resistors in the presence of the airwave. In order to examine and test these claims, a modeling code has been developed for computing time-domain responses for layered 1D models with arbitrarily located and oriented transmitters and receivers. The code extends the open-source frequency domain code Dipole1D by efficiently computing the time-domain, step-on, and impulse responses by Fourier transformation of the frequency-domain kernels. Impulse responses are used along with pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) to generate synthetic time-domain data. A realistic noise model and waveform scaling effects are then applied to synthetic step-on, PRBS, and the frequency-domain SIO "Waveform D" data generated from this code. Wiener deconvolution is applied to recover impulse responses from the PRBS data, allowing for a systematic examination of the sensitivity and resolution of time-domain and frequency-domain CSEM to representative targets of interest for offshore hydrocarbon exploration. These studies suggest that there is no large ad- vantage to time-domain techniques, as previously suggested, and rather that the frequency-domain Waveform D should give better results in the presence of noise for the shallow marine setting.
