Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Observations on Salmons and Trout in Alaska To assist in the solution of various problems, it was deemed desir able in connection with the Alaska salmon investigation of 1903 to establish shore stations. The work at these stations was to comprise not only the study of the habits of the salmon in fresh waters and adja cent bays, but, in addition, a reconnaissance of all the neighboring basins with reference to available hatchery sites, observation of the methods employed in taking fish for the canneries, an inquiry into the sea habitat and the factors influencing the return of the adult fish, an inquiry into the efficiency of the hatcheries then operated, and a gen eral study of the biological features of territory immediately adj acent to the stations. The facilities offered by the establishments of the Alaska Packers' Association at Loring and at Karluk determined the adoption of the Naha and Karluk rivers as localities for this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska's Fishery Resources, the Pink Salmon Pink salmon have the shortest and simplest life his tory of any Pacific salmon. Because they have a 2-year life cycle and return to their native streams to spawn, two genetically distinct lines occur in each stream. The lines are called even or odd-year on the basis of the year in which the adults spawn. Differences in the num ber and in the size of the fish in the two lines have been the subject of speculation for many years. In some areas, only one line spawns in significant numbers, leaving fish erman with few or no fish in an off year. For example, Although several attempts have been made to trans plant pink salmon to waters outside their natural range, no new important fishery has been established. The United States planted them in rivers in Maine, the Rus sians in tributaries of the Barents and White Seas of northern Europe, and the Canadians in tributaries to Hudson Bay and in rivers in the Maritime Provinces of eastern Canada. None of these efforts resulted in runs that survived more than a few cycles. Although pink salmon do not usually complete their life cycle in fresh water, an accidental release of several hundred fry resulted in a population that perpetuated itself for a few cycles in Lake Superior. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Salmon Fisheries of the Pacific Coast In most places the flesh is of a deep salmon red, but in certain places, notably southeast Alaska, Bristol Bay, Puget Sound, and British Columbia, many of the fish, the proportion being sometimes as much as one-third of the catch, have white flesh. A few examples have been taken with one side of the body red and the other white, while some are found with mottled flesh. No reasonable explanation of this phenomenon has yet been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-History and Habits of the Salmon, Sea-Trout, Trout, and Other Freshwater Fish Fish and their ways have at all times engaged the attention of the writer, and the outcome of these studies has been the production of this volume. Within its pages he has endeavoured to clear up many points relative to the history of salmon and trout which have until lately remained a mystery. So many unsatisfactory theories have been advanced, that he determined to take full advantage of his position as Manager of the Tay Salmon Fisheries Co., Ltd., and do all in his power to investigate and further our knowledge regarding this most interesting branch of Natural History. With this end in view, the marking of smolts on their way to the sea, and their recapture afterwards, have been extensively carried on, and their weight, date of capture, and the particular run to which they belonged, have been carefully recorded. Hitherto it was believed that salmon smolts returned as grilse the same year as they went down to the sea, but a study of the smolt does not bear this out. Again, the writer shows that the large Spring salmon, the small Spring salmon, and also the "Summer Run," are on their first return from the sea, and not from the kelt grilse as many supposed. Evidence is also given that the so-called salmon bull-trout is not a trout, but a true salmon which has spawned, and consequently has become altered in appearance and white in the flesh.
