Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Observations on Salmons and Trout in Alaska To assist in the solution of various problems, it was deemed desir able in connection with the Alaska salmon investigation of 1903 to establish shore stations. The work at these stations was to comprise not only the study of the habits of the salmon in fresh waters and adja cent bays, but, in addition, a reconnaissance of all the neighboring basins with reference to available hatchery sites, observation of the methods employed in taking fish for the canneries, an inquiry into the sea habitat and the factors influencing the return of the adult fish, an inquiry into the efficiency of the hatcheries then operated, and a gen eral study of the biological features of territory immediately adj acent to the stations. The facilities offered by the establishments of the Alaska Packers' Association at Loring and at Karluk determined the adoption of the Naha and Karluk rivers as localities for this work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fishing Alaska's Wild' is a wilderness fishing adventure ebook. Each chapter is introduced with a photo taken at the time and location of the writing. A reference link is available for viewing additional photos of the various adventure excursions. Alaskan author Doug C. Myers is a former owner of a sport fishing lodge located in remote Southwest Alaska. Myers writes of his fishing/wildlife adventures on wild rivers of the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay Regions, Kodiak Island, Alaska Peninsula, and less secluded Kenai Peninsula. Detailed attention is given to fishing upper Kenai River reds (sockeye salmon) and Arctic grayling. To read 'Fishing Alaska's Wild' is to take a virtual trip to the fisherman's 'last frontier' - a timeless treasure experienced by a fortunate few. For some it provides the vicarious realization of an elusive dream. Episodes of catching Alaska salmon are included in several chapters - king (chinook), red (sockeye), chum (dog), pink (humpy), and silver (coho) salmon. A saga account of the salmon's migratory pattern and metamorphic change leading to instinct's spawning ritual is also included. Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden char, northern pike, herring, and halibut are also featured. Included also is time spent with Native friends at their subsistence fish camp on the shoreline of a designated 'wild and scenic' river in Southwest Alaska. From ancient privilege to wildlife observations and encounters to sport fishing highlights, the ebook emphasizes Alaska's greatest resource - the spirit of adventure. The book's contents includes: Katmai Wilderness Drama, Rainbow Reward, Ancient Privilege, Appointment With Kings, Migration Spectacle, Prospecting Silver, Treasured Island Jewel, Wilderness Extravaganza (A River Runs Red), Arctic Splendor, Final Cast Retrieve, and Extending The Journey. You will learn about sport fishing experiences that will more than wet your appetite for your own adventure, whether in Alaska or out your own back door. Recommended: 'Your book was very interesting to read. I have fished Alaska waters for many years. I know from my own fishing that your experiences are well written.' - Larry Connolly, Air Force Retired, Alaska 'Myself and my buddy Jeff loved your book. Thank you!. Someday I hope to visit your land!' - Marque Kelsey - Nature Photographer and Jeff Smith - Screenplay Writer, California

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.

Book excerpt: Potamodromous Rainbow Trout are an important ecological and recreational resource in freshwater systems of Alaska, and increased human development, hydroelectric projects, declining Pacific salmon stocks, and climate change may threaten their populations. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, field-measured and remotely-sensed aquatic habitat characteristics, snorkel surveys, and resource selection and occupancy models to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of adult Rainbow Trout (>400 mm FL) at multiple spatial and temporal scales across the large (31,221 km2) and complex Susitna River basin of southcentral Alaska during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. We found that trout overwintered in mainstem habitats near tributary mouths from November to April. After ice-out in May, trout ascended tributaries up to 51 km to spawn, and afterward moved downstream to lower tributary reaches to intercept egg and flesh subsidies provided by spawning salmon in July and August. Trout transitioned back to mainstem overwintering habitats at the onset of autumn when salmon spawning activity waned. Fidelity to tributary of capture varied across seasons, but was high in three out of four drainages. Different habitat characteristics influenced Rainbow Trout habitat use during each season, including stream gradient and sinuosity in the winter, substrate suitability and sinuosity during spawning, mean annual flow during the pre-salmon feeding season, and Chinook salmon spawning potential after the arrival of adult salmon in freshwater. We found that during the ice-free feeding season trout responded to fine-scale (channel unit) characteristics rather than more coarse-scale (stream reach) variables. Weekly movements were significantly longer when spawning salmon were present compared to pre-arrival. We found no difference in movements and habitat use for a subset of fish for which sex was identified using genetic analysis. However, the observed sex ratio was heavily female-biased, which contrasts with what has been observed in other non-anadromous salmonid populations. As most trout undertake extensive movements within and among tributaries and make use of a variety of seasonal habitats to complete their life histories, it will be critical to take a broad and multiscale approach to their management in light of anticipated future land use and climate change.
