Book excerpt: Low-temperature X-ray diffraction (LTXRD) investigations offer many challenges to the diffractionist, not all of which are technical or scientific in nature. LTXRD studies can be frustrating: There are at least two reports of investigations ruined by the loss of crystals (grown with extreme difficulty) because of the widespread power failure and blackout in the northeastern United States in late 1965. LTXRD studies can cause discomfort: In several instances, "low temperatures" have been attained by opening all the windows in the X-ray laboratory. LTXRD studies can be dangerous: It was once reported that a crys tal was lost because a laboratory assistant fell down a flight of stairs and lay unconscious for about an hour on his way to refilling a liquid-nitrogen (LN2 ) dewar. This last report indicated the disposition of the crystal but not that of the laboratory assistant. However, in general, the results of low-temperature X-ray diffraction investigations cannot be obtained in any other manner, and one is well compensated for the effort expended in constructing and maintaining a low-temperature system. Crystal-structure analyses of solidified liquids and gases, phase transformation investigations, accurate crystal-structure analy ses and electron-density maps, thermal expansion measurements, and defect structure studies are a few of the many important applications of LTXRD.

Book excerpt: The Xiphos is a new diffractometer that has been been designed and built to determine the solid-state structures of materials at ultra low temperatures. As one of very few single-crystal X-ray diffractometers capable of collecting diffraction data from crystals cooled to 2 K, the Xiphos has an enormous potential for improving our understanding of the relationship between the solid-state structure and the physical properties of many materials which show interesting and valuable behaviour at ultra low temperatures. However, there are some challenges to collecting good quality data due to the beryllium vacuum shrouds surrounding the crystal which are necessary components of the cryostat used for reaching these low temperatures. A new program called Masquerade is described that helps to overcome these challenges by generating 'masks' describing the position of the beryllium scattering from the vacuum shrouds. These masks can be used during data integration to prohibit measuring the diffracted intensities of X-ray reflections which are contaminated by beryllium scattering. A new protocol for data collection is also presented to recover the reflection intensities that are missing as a result of the masks. Results are presented showing a marked improvement in the accuracy of the reflection intensities which can be obtained from diffraction patterns collected with the Xiphos when the data have been contaminated by beryllium scattering from the vacuum shrouds. Several additional computer programs have been developed which enhance the data collection process by monitoring the sample temperature and offering the ability to monitor the status of the Xiphos and the progress of a diffraction experiment remotely. The development and use of these programs is described herein. To show the Xiphos and Masquerade in action, structural studies at a range of temperatures between 2 K and 160 K are presented on charge-transfer complexes which exhibit superconductivity below 7 K, in addition to studies at ultra low temperatures of spin-crossover complexes, organic radicals and single molecular magnets. The relationship between the solid-state structure and interesting physical properties can be better understood by determining the structure at the same temperatures at which the properties are exhibited; a process that can now be undertaken routinely in a university laboratory with the Xiphos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Support from the National Science Foundation has made it possible for the tenth annual Cryogenic Engineering Conference, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and capably directed by K. R. Atkins and his staff, to emphasize the major international advances in cryogenic engineering. This specific emphasis resulted in a final program of over one hundred papers and has made it necessary to publish the proceedings of the conference in two volumes. The first volume will be similar in nature to previous volumes in this series, while the second volume will feature the international aspect of the conference program. The latter volume, because of this distinction, will be entitled International Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. As in the past, the Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee gratefully acknow ledges the assistance of all the dedicated workers in the cryogenic field who have contributed their time in reviewing the preliminary papers for the program and the final manuscripts for this volume. Since the list of participants in this thankless task numbers well over one hundred, any attempt to acknowledge their individual contributions in the limited space available would be practically impossible.
