Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Historic Families of South Carolina The sketches forming this little book were written when the author was a student in the High School of Atlanta. Since that time they have been revised and enlarged to some extent, but the general plan and even most of the phraseology have remained unchanged. The book itself does not aspire to be classed as a genealogy; it is merely an account of the lives of the author's own ancestors and will be of interest only to his immediate family and kinsmen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Album: An Account of the Moods of Charleston, South Carolina, and Connected Families This work was undertaken in the fall of 1920 in Boston, and was concluded in Atlanta more than twenty-two years later. The inspiration for it was my discovery of a history of the Stubbs family at Goodspeed's Book Shop, on Beacon Hill. Many stories of family lore had come down to me from my elders, but not until this find was my interest in family history really aroused. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alstons and Allstons of North and South Carolina: Compiled From English, Colonial and Family Records With Personal Reminiscences; Also Notes of Some Allied Families My endeavor in compiling these notes has been to col lect the genealogical records of the Alston family in America, and to have them so arranged that the Ancestral. Lines can be easily traced, and the relationship marked out. In some lines family details are fully given, in others less so. I availed myself of all the reliable information that was obtainable. We would have been glad to have been able to insert more extended historical notes throughout the entire work, but such has been unobtainable, except from a few of the many prominent and well known mem bers. In a few families all records have been lost, and no trace of them can be found. While all families have not been fully traced, yet it is hoped that sufficient data have been given to enable such to connect and trace the relationship. There were two major Alston-Allston lines: one in North Carolina from which the author descends and which is a very comprehensive genealogy of this family; the other was the Allston family of South Carolina, in which the author concentrated on the male line. This reprint updates the South Carolina line of Allston family, emphasizing the female lines. Contains excellent genealogies of the LaBruce, Ward, Pawley families of the Wacacaamaw area. The publisher has added a very comprehensive photo section of various descendants of the Allstons, LaBruce, Pawleys and Wards from photograghs and oil paintings, as well as family jewlery and other items dating from the 1730's. This is a MUST book for anyone with roots in the Low Country of South Carolina due to the many intermarriages between these four familiesand other illustrious families of Colonial South Carolina.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790: South Carolina The First Census of the United States (1790) com prised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. A complete set of the schedules for each state, with a summary for the counties, and in many cases for towns, was filed in the State Department, but unfortunately they are not now complete, the returns for the states of Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennes see, and Virginia having been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812. For several of the states for which schedules are lacking it is probable that the Director of the Census could obtain lists which would present the names of most of the heads of families at the date of the First Census. In Virginia, state enumerations were made in 1782, 1783, 1784, and 1785, but the lists on file in the State Library include the names for only 39 of the 78 counties into which the state was divided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dwelling Houses of Charleston, South Carolina In this volume the authors have endeavored to tell the story of the older dwelling houses of Charleston and the families inhabiting them. It has not been their object to list or to describe these dwelling houses after the manner of a guide-book, but to show how the fashions of its architecture, though imported and constantly modified by new ideas brought chiefly from England, have yet maintained local characteristics, resulting in quite a distinctive style which has steadily persisted and been developed. This development lies spread before us in the Charleston streets, where the houses of successive periods stand side by side, so little altered that the stranger is rather struck by the atmosphere and interest of the place as a whole than by the beauty or quaintness of a few outstanding edifices. In trying to convey this impression we have naturally had to select out of the many available examples houses which, by their marked type, show best this thread of architectural growth, and we have treated of the families which constructed or dwelt in these houses. It is manifestly impossible to treat, even in a volume of this size, of every historic relic, but this necessary restraint has been harder because each public or private building has a history of its own, and about no place in this country has a greater mass of historical tradition collected.
