Book excerpt: Donegal Generations is an entertaining piece of historical fiction that follows various men as they describe their lives in rural Ireland during the 1700s and 1800s. Encompassing a lighthearted attitude, this gripping novel crafts captivating stories that hook readers from the very beginning. Offering engaging stories on family, courtship, and adversity that are impossible to put down, this wonderful novel is a unique glimpse into life in rural Ireland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Through three successive generations of Irish families, three men will discuss their lives, childhood, religion, superstitions, and courtships in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland. Each man documents his struggle with the land, landlords, and an oppressive government. Each also encounters a mysterious woman who inhabits a hidden spring. Their stories offer a glimpse into life during these times. Patrick must overcome a rival suitor for his intended bride. Later, he does his best to control a secret society formed by his neighbors that threatens and terrorizes their tyrannical landlord. His son, James, is involved in plotting the murder of a man suspected of killing a loved one. James's journey will take him down a spiritual path as he tries to provide for his family. Finally, Charles's story finds a man working to overcome alcoholism and the great potato famine before immigrating to America to find work in the textile industry. Using subsequent generations of Irish men to tell touching stories that are unique to the times, this one-of-a-kind book takes readers on an exciting journey through a difficult time in Irish history. Inspired by his own genealogical research, author Tom Gallen decided to use this newfound information to craft a story about how his ancestors lived before and during the great potato famine. Using the history of the locales in the novel, Gallen incorporated his findings into Ireland's rich backstory to create a truly fulfilling and entertaining work of historical fiction. Uniquely using the personal perspective of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in a present tense and first-person style, Donegal Generations is an approachable and mesmerizing work of fiction that will stay with readers long after they've finished the final page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents arguments for the following propositions: Local economic development strategies in the United States should include extensive investments in high quality early childhood programs, such as prekindergarten (pre K) education, child care, and parenting assistance. Economic development policies should also include reforms in business tax incentives. But economic development benefitsChigher earnings per capita in the local communityCcan be better achieved if business incentives are complemented by early childhood programs. Book Synopsis The Padre of Isleta by : Julia Keleher
Download or read book The Padre of Isleta written by Julia Keleher and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolph F. Bandelier, Charles Fletcher Lummis, and Father Anton Docher are names closely associated with the early colonial days in New Mexico. All of these characters appear in this narrative of Isleta Pueblo which tells the story of Father Docher's life in the Indian pueblo from the day when he first arrived along the road that was bad, but the sunset beautiful in 1891 until the time of the death of his two great friends, Bandelier and Lummis, and his own death several months later in 1928. Father Docher's job was not an easy one, but his great patience and understanding helped him through many difficulties. The story goes into many of these and into much of the legend and superstition of Isleta Pueblo which the Padre encountered during his long life there. He was particularly interested in the story of Father Padilla, the Franciscan friar who came with Coronado's band, whose body was buried in the church at Isleta but which refused to stay underground. Julia Keleher was a member and Professor in the English Department of the University of New Mexico from 1931 to her retirement in 1959. She was also a professional writer and edited each of her brother, William A. Keleher's books, all of which have been published by Sunstone Press in its Southwest Heritage Series. Her collaboration with Elsie Ruth Chant resulted in this fascinating collection of incidents for all readers interested in the American Southwest. She was married to Lloyd Chant and raised two children, George Ashley Chant and Julia Jane Chant.
Book Synopsis Emigrants from Ireland to America, 1735-1743 by : Frances McDonnell
Download or read book Emigrants from Ireland to America, 1735-1743 written by Frances McDonnell and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in the obscure "Journal of the Irish House of Commons" in 1743 as a report of a special committee appointed to look into abuses of the system of enforced emigration, these lists of about 2,000 felons and vagabonds forcibly transported from Ireland between 1735 and 1743 constitute one of the few known sources of Irish emigration to the New World in the 18th century. Copied verbatim from the pages of the "Journal" by Frances McDonnell, these priceless lists have been brought to light for the benefit of the long-suffering researcher. As published here in this handy, indexed volume, information in the lists generally includes the name of transportee, county or city from which returns of transportation orders were obtained, date of assizes (court), reason for transportation, and occasionally the name of the ship and place of destination in the colonies. Clearly this is an historically important work and a unique source of information, and it belongs in every serious researcher's library.
