Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some First Steps in Human Progress The word "anthropology" from its derivation means, of course, a discourse concerning man. It has been defined by the great French naturalist, De Quatrefages, as "the natural history of man." It is, then, scientific study of man of the same sort as the scientific study which a botanist pursues concerning plants and the zoologist concerning animals. In its most comprehensive meaning it includes the study of the physical man and of his mental, social, and religious natures. It is a broad field; not easily limited. It includes a number of subordinate sciences, such as somatology or physical anthropology, ethnology, prehistoric archaeology, and culture history. It is not the intention of the author in writing this book to discuss the whole field of anthropology, but simply to consider some points in culture history. It shall be our aim to trace simply some few of the first steps in human progress. Primitive man, whatever his capacity for learning and achievement, faced an unknown world. He was to subdue nature; to do so he must solve many problems. If we look at the great progress and advancement which we, in America, have made within one hundred years we may see how the solution of one problem aids to solve a new problem; how the ground gained to-day serves simply as a point from which to advance to occupy new ground to-morrow. This progress is now marked and rapid; when it began it was slow and feeble. A part of this book was originally presented in the form of lectures to a Chautauqua audience. This is fortunate, since it has caused men to probe into the secrets of Nature, and to discover how to harness her forces to minister to their convenience and happiness. A like curiosity causes many to wonder how there arose the varied elements that go to make up our civilization. An attempt to satisfy this curiosity is the purpose of this volume. The next one hundred years will witness achievements so extraordinary that the terms marvelous and miraculous will not begin to describe them. Every thing that the master minds of today are dreaming about will be realized, and infinitely more. Even much of what can now be discerned in the light of the soul's vision will come to pass, and hundreds of worlds, as yet closed to the minds of the many, will Open their limit less possibilities to the race. Accordingly, the welfare, the happiness and the progress of man will be promoted as never before. All these things, however, will simply mark the continuation of lines of progress already in action; they will naturally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Human Progress Man everywhere and at all times exhibits this faculty - everywhere and at all times of which we have knowledge he has made some use of it. But the degree in which this has been done greatly varies. Between the rude canoe and the steamship; between the boomerang and the repeating rifle; between the roughly carved wooden idol and the breathing mar ble of Grecian art; between savage knowledge and modern science; between the wild Indian and the white settler; between the Hottentot woman and the belle of polished society, there is an enormous difference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Human Progress and Modern Reforms: A Lecture Delivered Before the Mercantile Library Association of the City of New-York The laws of progress then, come under three gene ral heads: the nature of man; his condition, i. E., in the material world; and his social, including his politi cal relations. The first law of progress, therefore, is moral free dom. Call this man's birthright or not - say or deny that all men are born to be free, -one thing is certain, there cannot be one step in human progress without this condition. And it is only from what is inevitably left of freedom to the very serf and slave, that he makes any progress. More in fact is left, than we always consider, or than our current language always admits. Free will, free thought, may be in many ways injuriously checked; but it cannot be extinguished in any human being; if it were, it would be, not slavery, but death to him as a man. And as faras' any institu tion, any authority, any religion, any government crushes down this freedom, its stops the growth of men and communities.
