Book excerpt: Interpretations and pertinent data on the clustering phenomena obtained in previous experiments are reviewed in order to determine why subjects reorganize material in recall. When variables which augment or diminish the effects of pre-established association and category relations on intellectual processes were contrasted, prominent relationships reduced subjective organization. In word pair experiments, category relations and strong association tendencies excluded idiosyncratic bases of organization. When associational and categorical relations between members of a word pair provided a basis for clustering in free recall alternative to the bases, subject effected subjective organization or idiosyncratic pairing. Although relatively highly associated pairs carried most of the clustering, synonyms did not represent effective categorical groups. Specific, conflicting, and inappropriate modifiers disrupted associational and categorical relationships, thus decreasing clustering. Since an induced set and the homogeneity of lists may influence the use of certain inter-word relations, the entire range of the intentionality variable, from incidental learning to specific, induced sets, should be examined in order to fix precisely the conditions under which pre-established associations and categories will and will not work.

To make this research accessible to a much wider audience, The Science of False Memory has been written to require little or no background knowledge of the theory and techniques used in memory research.Brainerd and Reyna introduce the volume by considering the progenitors to the modern science of false memory, and noting the remarkable degree to which core themes of contemporary research were anticipated by historical figure such as Binet, Piaget, and Bartlett. They continue with an account of the varied methods that have been used to study false memory both inside and outside of the laboratory. The title, A Modelfor Personality, was chosen on purpose to indicate that we are here concerned with a discussion of how models in this field ought to be constructed, what their functions were, and whether such models or paradigms could with advantage be produced at this stage of development. One particular aspect of personality, extraversion introversion (E), has been chosen to exemplify the desiderata which emerge from such a discussion. It is not suggested that personality and E are synonymous - merely that this particular dimension is perhaps better known than any other, has had more experimental work done on it than any other and has acquired a better theoretical substructure, and more links with genetics and physiology, than any other. Hence it seems most likely to serve as an example of how a satisfactory model of personality might ultimately be constructed, i. e. by analogy with E. Other dimensions of personality, such as neuroticism-stability or psycho tic ism-superego functioning, are mentioned in the discussion, but only when they overlap or interrelate with E. The book uses E as an example to illustrate the way in which a model of personality can be constructed, but it is in no way a summary of all that is known about E.

Some needs and gaps identified at the workshop include: (1) characterization of exposures from wireless devices and RF base station antennas in juveniles, children, fetuses, and pregnant women and (2) evaluation of devices that use newer technologies (e.g., texting, web-surfing).
