Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide a comparative assessment of the significance of ‘human factors’ in effective counter-terrorism. The phrase ‘human factors’ is used to describe personal relationships, individual capabilities, effective leadership, technical interface, organisational culture and the community engagement necessary to effectively minimise, counter and control the threat of terrorism. Unlike many works in the field, this book is constructed around the input of ‘experienced knowledge’ from over 170 semi-structured interviews of specialist military, policing, intelligence and security practitioners - those actors actually involved in countering terrorism. These practitioners come from seven countries – the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Israel, Turkey and the United States – all of which have suffered over the years from different types of terrorist threat and responded with a mixture of counter-terrorist measures. Where military practitioners also discussed overseas counter-insurgency measures, that material has been included, since terrorism forms a key aspect of such wider insurgencies. The resulting interview data was analysed through a variant of ‘Grounded Theory’ to identify key emerging themes and issues, both positive and negative, relevant to ‘human factors’ in the individual countries and more generically. This book incorporates the informed operational experiences and insights of the interviewees while seeking to provide examples of successful counter-terrorist measures at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. This book will be of much interest to students of counter-terrorism, defence studies and security studies in general.

Book excerpt: "The military, along with private industry, is relying more on small teams of specialized individuals who work together to achieve a common goal. Examples of these teams include emergency medical teams, aircrews, decision- making teams, industrial project teams, Special Forces teams, weapon system crews and everyday work teams. Training and military doctrine has been evolving to reflect this emphasis on teamwork. The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to review literature published over the last ten years concerning team and small group performance. Specifically, the articles reviewed in this report represent a sampling of the research published in the social sciences, including psychology, sociology, and business. The team and small group literature reviewed includes examples of the many types of teams mentioned earlier. A summary and integration of this work is provided. In general, the research suggests that there are several components which contribute to the successful performance of teams, and that some of these components can be explicitly trained. Several training models are discussed." -- Stinet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Directions in Group Communication takes as its mission the setting of the agenda for the study of group communication in the future. It does so by presenting work that scholars have not previously explored in the current small group communication literature. Part I focuses on new theoretical and conceptual directions, both presenting new views and extending current positions. Part II examines new research methodologies, while Part III looks at antecedent factors affecting group communication. Parts IV and V of the text provide insight into both group communication process and practices. Part VI covers different group communication contexts, including communication patterns in top management teams. An excellent companion to The Handbook of Group Communication Theory and Research, this volume sets the direction for future study for students and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The text is written for readers with a command of basic principles of social psychology but have relatively little background in the study of group behavior. The author suggests that groups are formed for a broad variety of purposes and that our effectiveness in working with groups can be increased by understanding some of the many variables that affect group processes. The author introduces findings from a number of empirical studies to make inferences about group behavior. After introducing the reader to the study of small groups the author addresses several key topical areas in a chapter by chapter approach: (1) individuals and groups, (2) group formation and development, (3) physical environment of groups, (4) personal characteristics of group members, (5) group composition, (6) group structure, (7) leadership, (8) group tasks and group goals, (9) groups in action, and (10) issues and problems.

Book excerpt: Research on small groups is highly diverse because investigators who study such groups vary in their disciplinary identifications, theoretical interests, and methodological preferences. The goal of this volume is to capture that diversity, and thereby convey the breadth and excitement of small group research by acquainting students with work on five fundamental aspects of groups. The volume also includes an introductory chapter by the editors which provides an overview of the history of and current state-of-the-art in the field. Together with introductions to each section, discussion questions and suggestions for further reading, make the volume ideal reading for senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in group dynamics.
