This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary edition. The full report analyzes the issues affecting income security for the elderly in both developing and industrial nations. Systems providing financial security for the old are under increasing strain throughout the world. Changing demographics have led to an increased proportion of old people in the general population. Traditional means of support for the old, such as extended families, are weakening. Meanwhile, formal systems, such as government-backed pensions, have proven unstable. For these reasons economists, policymakers, and government officials are exploring ways to address such issues as: *How to ensure financial security for the old and the best ways of paying for such security *The roles of the public and private sectors when systems are used to enhance rather than detract from economic growth. This study, the first comprehensive and global examination of old age security, addresses such issues. It identifies three functions of old age financial security programs--redistribution, saving, and insurance. It evaluates the policy options for meeting these functions using two criteria: their impact on the aged and their impact on the economy as a whole. The study suggests that financial security for the old and economic growth would be better served if governments relied on three systems: 1) A publicly managed system with mandatory participation and the limited goal of reducing poverty among the old 2) A privately managed mandatory savings system 3) A voluntary savings system. These three systems would ensure against the many risks of old age. The study concludes that a combination of different income security policies is more effective than any single approach and that all countries should begin planning for their aging populations now. Book Synopsis The Power to Choose by : Naila Kabeer
Download or read book The Power to Choose written by Naila Kabeer and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this path-breaking study, social economist Naila Kabeer examines the lives of Bangladeshi garment workers in Bangladesh and Britain to shed light on the question of what constitutes "fair" competition in international trade. She argues that if the unhealthy coalition of multinationals and labor movements is truly seeking to improve the working conditions for women and children in the "Third World," as well as those of western workers, their efforts should be directed away from an attempt to impose labor standards and towards a support for the organization of labor rights. Any attempt to devise acceptable labor standards at an international level which takes no account of the forces of inclusion and exclusion with local labor movements is, she further argues, likely to represent the interests of the powerful at the expense of those of the weak.

Book Synopsis Brazil in the Uruguay Round of the GATT by : Ricardo Wahrendorff Caldas
Download or read book Brazil in the Uruguay Round of the GATT written by Ricardo Wahrendorff Caldas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume analyses Brazil’s strategy in the Uruguay Round, focusing on the issue of services. Three different moments were chosen for analysis. The first was during discussions before the launch of the Uruguay Round. During this period, Brazil led the Less Developed Countries (LDCs), in obstructing the inclusion of services on the agenda. The Second was during the launch of the Uruguay Round, when Brazil persisted with this policy. This second period is referred to as the initial position of Brazil in the Uruguay Round. The third was Montreal, in 1988, when Brazil supported the principles which guided an agreement on services. After this turning point, Brazil’s position in the Round was increasingly supportive of an agreement, not only in services, but in all fields.
Book Synopsis Combating Inequality by : Alexander Gallas
Download or read book Combating Inequality written by Alexander Gallas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic inequality has recently gained considerable academic attention. However, two important aspects of inequality have not been discussed systematically: its multidimensional nature and the question of what can be done to reverse it. This book offers insights from scholars representing the Global Labour University, which operates in Brazil, Germany, India, South Africa and the US. They analyse the various drivers of inequality, assess policy responses, and discuss counterstrategies. The main findings of this book are that rising levels of inequality cannot be addressed only with the standard policies responses, namely education, redistribution and ‘green growth’. In addition, the way markets currently function needs to be corrected. The chapters in this volume focus on specific fields of contemporary capitalism where important drivers of inequality are located, for example, the labour market; the financial system; the tax system; multi-national corporations; and gender relations. Other chapters discuss in detail where political opportunities for change lie. They critically assess existing countermeasures; the idea of a ‘green economy’ and its implications for inequality; and existing campaigns by trade unions and new social movements against inequality. In line with the global nature of the problem, this book contains case studies on countries both from the north and south with considerable economic and political weight. This book provides academics, political practitioners and civil society activists with a range of ideas on how to drive back inequality. It will be of interest to those who study political economy, development economy and labour economics.
