Book excerpt: Explains the importance of the title and role of Messiah in each of the Gospels and argues that Christianity was a messianic movement rooted in its Jewish context. Michael Bird engages the subject of the messianism of the four Gospels. While the title and role of 'Messiah' ascribed to Jesus in the Gospels has long been regarded as a late add on, a fabricated claim, or an insignificant feature, Bird argues in contrast that the messianic claims are the most significant for the portrayal of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Messianic prophecies are found in the Old Testament and they are thousands of years old. The ancient Jewish rabbis identified these prophecies as being Messianic in nature long before the birth of Jesus Christ. When Christ came, there was controversy among the Jews regarding whether He fulfilled Messianic prophecies or not. Unbelieving Jews did not accept that Jesus fulfilled these prophecies. However, Christianity soundly agreed that these ancient prophecies were fulfilled in our Lord Jesus Christ. This uniformity regarding the Messianic prophecies lasted until the time of the Enlightenment in the 18th century. The atheistic leaders of the Enlightenment soundly rejected the vast majority of the Holy Scriptures and especially anything that was miraculous in nature. They completely rejected the concept that something could be foretold such as a prophecy. Since that time, there has been a decline in Christendom regarding belief in the Messianic prophecies. Liberal, critical theologians have followed the Enlightenment icons and have rejected the Messianic prophecies. Many Christian groups do not believe or teach the Messianic prophecies as being fulfilled in Jesus Christ now. However, Jesus said that Moses ..".wrote about Me" and that the Scriptures ..".testify about Me" (John 5:39, 46). Jesus Christ performed many mighty miracles that were witnessed by thousands of people. He Himself prophesied that He would die and be resurrected from the dead. Over 500 people saw Him after His resurrection. Could such a man be so wrong regarding the Messianic prophecies? Come and weigh the evidence for yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He then traces the rise and fall of "the messianic idea"' in Jewish studies and gives an alternative account of early Jewish messiah language: the convention worked because there existed both an accessible pool of linguistic resources and a community of competent language users. Whereas it is commonly objected that the normal rules for understanding "christos" do not apply in the case of Paul since he uses the word as a name rather than a title, Novenson shows that "christos" in Paul is neither a name nor a title but rather a Greek honorific, like Epiphanes or Augustus. Focusing on several set phrases that have been taken as evidence that Paul either did or did not use "christos" in its conventional sense, Novenson concludes that the question cannot be settled at the level of formal grammar. Examining nine passages in which Paul comments on how he means the word "christos", Novenson shows that they do all that we normally expect any text to do to count as a messiah text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus claim to be the long-awaited "messiah"? Going against much contemporary scholarship, Australian scholar Michael Bird argues that he did. He begins by exploring the messianic expectations in the Old Testament and Second Temple Jewish literature. Next, Bird points out weaknesses in current arguments that "Messiah," or "Christ," was a title given to Jesus by the early church but not used by Jesus himself. Bird then examines the Gospels and related literature, finding in Jesus's words and actions evidence that he saw himself as the messiah described in the Scriptures of Israel and believed that Israel's restoration hinged on the outcome of his ministry.

This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this title, Shirley Lucass examines the history of the concept of messiah in biblical, and post-biblical traditions. For 2000 years, Judaism and Christianity have been at odds with one another. The problem at the heart of the division is the concept of messiah. Shirley Lucass looks directly at the concept of messiah from an historical perspective and examines its roots in ancient Jewish literature, and its development within the Christian tradition, aiming not only to trace the biblical and extra-biblical developments of the concept, but to outline a platform for religious dialogue. Lucass begins with a survey of methodological approaches, and then moves on to consider the origins of the messiah concept in ancient near eastern kingship, the 'anointed' in the Second Temple period and the messiah as outlined in the New Testament and in post 70 CE Messianism. Lucass contends that the New Testament concept of messiah is not inconsistent with, nor incompatible with the Jewish antecedent traditions, and it is this conclusion which enables her to present a valuable chapter on the implications of this study for inter-religious dialogue.
