HUNTING THE JAVELINA ALONG THE RIO GRANDE IN TEXAS. Accepting an invitation from my friend, George D. Ford, of Kansas City, Missouri, to accompany him to his ranch in Southwest Texas, on a hunting trip, we left for Cactus, December 6th, 1910. In the party were my old friend, H. P. Wright, and Mr. Foster, of Kansas City. Mr. Ford's ranch is composed of one hundred and fifty thousand acres all under a four wired, barbed fence. This ranch is located one hundred and fifty miles below San Antonio. When we arrived at the latter place where we were to change cars to another road, we learned that the train was eight hours late. Here we were met by "Tom" Coleman, of San Antonio, who ordered a special train of two coaches to take us on our journey. Mr. Coleman, known all over the Southwest as "Tom," is one of those big-hearted, wholesouled Texans who have, by their congeniality, made the state famous for the hospitality of its citizens. Tom has under wire about nine hundred miles of fence enclosing five hundred thousand acres of Southwestern Texas grazing land. We were met at Cactus by some fence riders of the Callahan (Mr. Ford's) ranch, and our equipment and selves were conveyed to the ranch house, ten miles from Cactus. To my surprise I found large houses with modern improvements, such as bath rooms and other conveniences. What strange surroundings to one who has been in the habit, while on hunting trips, of sleeping on the ground, in snow, rain and cold, to have nice brass beds, clean linen, a table and chairs to sit down in and a napkin at each china plate, and fresh cream and butter. Amid all these modern luxuries I could stand on the veranda, almost any day, and see jack rabbits, quails, wolves, and on several occasions, wild...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of an adventurer, hunter and naturalist in late nineteenth-century Africa, who would inspire novelists such as Rider Haggard and Wilbur Smith. The book describes Selous' extraordinary adventures, from elephant-hunting, and diamond-prospecting, to an early expedition to found Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the European scramble for Africa. The book also examines Selous' relationships with other influential people of the time, including Robert Baden-Powell, Frederick Russell Burnham, Cecil Rhodes, King Lobengula of the Ndebele, and American President Teddy Roosevelt. In Big Game Hunter Norman Etherington paints a skilful portrait of a complex man who started as an elephant hunter but who eventually founded some of the first game reserves in Africa and was acclaimed by both the National History Museum and the Royal Geographical Society for his collections and discoveries. Selous, who was killed by a German sniper bullet in Tanganyika in the First World War, was one of the world's great adventurers.

But there were women on those trips as well, and not just the trips to Africa, and they were often as successful at the hunt as the men. Women such as Lady Florence Dixie, Agnes Herbert, Osa Johnson, Grace Gallatin Seton, and Gladys Harriman hunted so well, they made names for themselves and wrote of their adventures. Divided into chapters detailing a specific time period, region hunted or individual woman, With Rifle and Petticoat explores the interesting women who hunted a variety of big game animals around the world.

Book excerpt: Never was the notion of "explore, experience, and evolve" more clear to Fred than the day he stepped into the dark woods alone (at the tender age of 27) and embraced adventure over unqualified panic for the first time in his life. For an entitled, self-confessed, five-star-resort-and-country-club snob, an elk hunting trip seemed unlikely-let alone three of them. But his evolution from elitist with a wine list to someone who discovers and embraces a profound love for the simple, unspoiled outdoors went far beyond just exchanging a coat and tie for more-comfortable camouflage. It was with great excitement (read: blissful ignorance) that he plunged into a world of discomforting unknowns, at the urging of his friend and hunting partner, Jon, who had amassed a lifetime of outdoor experiences and endeavored to pass along his fascination, skills, and love of the great outdoors to Fred, a true greenhorn. In this nonfiction narrative, Fred shares his hunting adventures, along with his missteps, relentless apprehensions, countless dents to his ego, and successes and failures alike, all of which lead to an extraordinary transformation that extends well beyond the forest. The goal (besides eliciting unrelenting bouts of snort-inducing laughter) is to encourage a retreat from cell phones and video games and to breed interest in the outdoors. Fred shares these experiences that have had a profound effect on him in the hope that it will encourage others to leap at the opportunity to experience life firsthand, engage all five senses, and explore this amazing world for themselves. Walk side by side with him as he confronts his own personal demons, along with intimidating animals that threaten his privileged existence, in a vast, unfamiliar, and often uncomfortable environment.
