Book excerpt: Machiavelli saw history in general as a way to learn useful lessons from the past for the present, and also as a type of analysis which could be built upon, as long as each generation did not forget the works of the past. In "Discourses on Livy" Machiavelli discusses what can be learned from roman period and many other eras as well, including the politics of his lifetime. This is a work of political history and philosophy written in the early 16th. The title identifies the work's subject as the first ten books of Livy's Ab urbe condita, which relate the expansion of Rome through the end of the Third Samnite War in 293 BC. Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 – 1527) was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer. He has often been called the father of modern political science. He was for many years a senior official in the Florentine Republic, with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He served as a secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power. He wrote his most well-known work The Prince in 1513, having been exiled from city affairs.
Book Synopsis Manufacturing Religion by : Russell T. McCutcheon
Download or read book Manufacturing Religion written by Russell T. McCutcheon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-19 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book, author Russell McCutcheon offers a powerful critique of traditional scholarship on religion, focusing on multiple interrelated targets. Most prominent among these are the History of Religions as a discipline; Mircea Eliade, one of the founders of the modern discipline; recent scholarship on Eliade's life and politics; contemporary textbooks on world religions; and the oft-repeated bromide that "religion" is a sui generis phenomenon. McCutcheon skillfully analyzes the ideological basis for and service of the sui generis argument, demonstrating that it has been used to constitute the field's object of study in a form that is ahistoric, apolitical, fetishized, and sacrosanct. As such, he charges, it has helped to create departments, jobs, and publication outlets for those who are comfortable with such a suspect construction, while establishing a disciplinary ethos of astounding theoretical naivete and a body of scholarship to match. Surveying the textbooks available for introductory courses in comparative religion, the author finds that they uniformly adopt the sui generis line and all that comes with it. As a result, he argues, they are not just uncritical (which helps keep them popular among the audiences for which they are intended, but badly disserve), but actively inhibit the emergence of critical perspectives and capacities. And on the geo-political scale, he contends, the study of religion as an ahistorical category participates in a larger system of political domination and economic and cultural imperialism.

Download or read book Advances in Discourse Approaches written by Marta Dynel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taboo words, Quentin Tarantino’s films, humorous dialogues from “Sex and the City”, witty advertising slogans, the Bible, Barack Obama’s speeches, or legal discourse are only a few of the topics addressed in the volume. The study of discourse is a diversified and fast-developing field of language research, embracing methodological proposals, discourse analyses, comparative research, translation studies and teaching perspectives. Within each of the approaches, theoretical frameworks and postulates abound. The list of research topics is inexhaustible, especially that each year brings new real-life material subject to analysis and issues to elaborate. Each chapter is devoted to a different topic and deploys a separate theoretical framework. The diversity of research data, methodologies and theoretical viewpoints guarantees the volume’s being a representative sample of multifarious developments in discourse approaches. The book should thus be an interesting resource for enterprising researchers and students of linguistics.

Book Synopsis Making Men Moral by : Robert P. George
Download or read book Making Men Moral written by Robert P. George and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1993-08-19 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary liberal thinkers commonly suppose that there is something in principle unjust about the legal prohibition of putatively victimless immoralities. Against the prevailing liberal view, Robert P. George defends the proposition that `moral laws' can play a legitimate, if subsidiary, role in preserving the `moral ecology' of the cultural environment in which people make the morally significant choices by which they form their characters and influence, for good or ill, the moral lives of others. George shows that a defence of morals legislation is fully compatible with a `pluralistic perfectionist' political theory of civil liberties and public morality.

Book Synopsis International Handbook of Practical Theology by : Birgit Weyel
Download or read book International Handbook of Practical Theology written by Birgit Weyel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm. The articles in this handbook recognize that religion, spirituality, lived religion on this side and beyond institutional communities refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are shifting. The Handbook of Practical Theology offers insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious affairs collected from various cultures and religions. The first section presents ‘concepts of religion’. Chapters include considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the fields of 'anthropology', 'community', 'family', 'institution', 'law', 'media', and 'politics' among others. The second section is dedicated to case studies of ‘religious practices’ from the perspective of their actors. The third section presents the main theoretical discourses that map the globally significant diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, fifty-eight authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and postcolonial world.
