Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Account of Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk The chief value of this compilation consists in the illustrations, and for these I wish to express my thanks to my friends the late R. Almack, Esq., Miss Bourdillon, E. T. Bridges, Esq., Miss Chapman, Miss Dunnage, Miss Daintrey, Miss Liveing, E. Liveing, Esq., M. D., and Miss S. Rowley. To Dr. Liveing I am also indebted for much valuable help in searching the MSS. in the British Museum. I have also to express my best thanks to Mr. Frere for allowing me to search and make extracts from the Mss. in his possession, and to Mr. Overall, the Librarian of the Guildhall Library, for extracts from the Records of the City of London. "As to the performance, I am under no concern to vindicate it from the slights and ridicules "that may be cast upon it by idle and witty people, who think all history to be scraps, and all "antiquity to be rust and rubbish. I say this only, next to the immediate discharge of my Holy "office, I know not, how in any course of studies I could have better served my patron, my people, "and my successors, than by preserving the memoirs of this parish, and the adjacent parts, which "before lay remote from common notice, and in a few years had been buried in unsearchable "oblivion. If the present age be too much immers'd in cares or pleasures to take any relish, or "to make any use of these discoveries, I then appeal to posterity, for I believe the times will "come when persons of better inclination will arise, who will be glad to find any collection of "this nature, and will be ready to supply the defects, and carry on the continuation of it. - From the Parochial Antiquities, hy WniT E.Kennett, Vicar of Ambrosden, 1695. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Family, and Politics is the first full-length, gender-inclusive study of the Howard family, one of the pre-eminent families of early-modern Britain. Most of the existing scholarship on this aristocratic dynasty's political operation during the first half of the sixteenth-century centres on the male family members, and studies of the women of the early-modern period tends to focus on class or geographical location. Nicola Clark, however, places women and the question of kinship in centre-stage, arguing that this is necessary to understand the complexity of the early modern dynasty. A nuanced understanding of women's agency, dynastic identity, and politics allows us to more fully understand the political, social, religious, and cultural history of early-modern Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a collective, the lives of the Princesses of York span across seven decades and the rule of five different Kings. The daughters of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, they were born into an England that had been ruled over by the great Plantagenet Kings for almost three hundred years. Their young years were blighted by tragedy: the death of their beloved father, followed by the disappearance and possible murder of their two brothers, Edward and Richard of York, forever now known to history as the infamous Princes in the Tower. With their own futures uncertain during the reign of their uncle, Richard III, and their mother held under house arrest, the Princesses had to navigate their way through the tumultuous years of the 1480s before having to adjust to a new King and a new dynasty in the shape of Henry VII, who would bring about the age of the Tudors. Through her marriage to Henry, Elizabeth of York rebuilt her life, establishing herself as a popular, if not hugely influential Queen. But she did not forget her younger siblings, and even before her own mother’s death, she acted as a surrogate mother to the younger York princesses, supporting them both financially and emotionally. The stories of the York Princesses are entwined into the fabric of the history of England, as they grew up, survived and even thrived in the new Tudor age. Their lives are played out against a backdrop of coronations and jousts, births and deaths, marriages and divorces and loyalties and broken allegiances. From the usurpation of Richard III, to the Battle of Bosworth, the brilliance of the court of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII, to the rise of Anne Boleyn, the York Princesses were there to witness events unfold. They were the daughters, sisters and aunts of Kings, and this is their story. The York Princesses is a natural follow-up to Sarah J. Hodder's first book, The Queen's Sisters, which told the stories of the lives of the sisters of Elizabeth Woodville.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the unauthorized sale, loss, or deteriorating condition of parochial libraries in the 1930s and 1940s, a postal survey of surviving collections was undertaken which resulted in a detailed report and directory finally published under the general editorship of Neil Ker as The Parochial Libraries of the Church of England: Report of a Committee appointed by the Central Council for the Care of Churches to Investigate the Number and Condition of Parochial Libraries belonging to the Church of England, with a Historical Introduction, Notes on Early Printed Books and their Care and an Alphabetical List of Parochial Libraries Past and Present, by Faith Press in 1959. This book is a thorough revision of that work and incorporates much of its apparatus while reflecting new discoveries and recent research. The Directory in particular has been greatly expanded to include libraries established up to c. 1900, and, especially, a broad sample of what have come to be known as desk-libraries, with one or more pre-1700 prescribed books. Many of the reports, documents, and tables, including the historical introduction, have been reprinted in this new edition, edited and modified to take account of new developments and findings. A Postscript, 2000 briefly outlines research in this field over the last 50 years or so, and there are a number of new lists and tables, one including statistical information. The index is a key to the whole book and should be especially consulted for references to former owners and donors and subject strengths.
