Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problem-Solving or Practice in Thinking Definite technique established. - D uring the past twenty-five years a definite technique of giving to pupils practice in problem solving or thinking has been developed in progressive American elementary schools. It is the purpose of this series of articles to acquaint more teachers with this technique so that any skilled teacher who is a good thinker may give pupils practice in prqblem solving and make them aware of the elements of skill in effective thinking. In order to show the importance and validity of the practices to be described we shall also discuss the place of problem solving in everyday life and the ways in which great problem solvers think. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patterns of Thinking in Solving Problems The study reported in this monograph is concerned With the mental operations of a group Of subjects during the process of solving a prob lem. The method is primarily Observational and analytical. The aim is to obtain evidence of individual patterns of thinking of a kind that Will permit objective descriptions. The study is not experimental; it is not a comparison Of controlled groups; it does not assume that the sample of subjects studied is typical of the general population. The purposes are, first, to develop a technique by Which patterns of thinking may be compared objectively, and second, to add to the sum of knowledge regarding the nature of the problem-solving process. It is hoped that the findings will be Of value to the schools in their attempt to teach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. In 10 self-contained chapters, it provides a comprehensive treatment of assignment problems from their conceptual beginnings through present-day theoretical, algorithmic and practical developments. The topics covered include bipartite matching algorithms, linear assignment problems, quadratic assignment problems, multi-index assignment problems and many variations of these. Researchers will benefit from the detailed exposition of theory and algorithms related to assignment problems, including the basic linear sum assignment problem and its variations. Practitioners will learn about practical applications of the methods, the performance of exact and heuristic algorithms, and software options. This book also can serve as a text for advanced courses in areas related to discrete mathematics and combinatorial optimisation. The revised reprint provides details on a recent discovery related to one of Jacobi's results, new material on inverse assignment problems and quadratic assignment problems, and an updated bibliography.

It demands hours and hours of prayer, weeks and weeks of study, and years and years of experimentation. When this psychology and pedagogy are religious, the task is more than appalling, it is overwhelming. An aim in theory is one thing, to translate it into terms of child consciousness is quite another; content on paper is a wholly different matter from content in the form of ideas and feelings; the method stated in the form of principles is a total stranger to the same rules or'laws as expressed in the form of spiritual reactions. Any thoughtful person who has read a hundred of the best books on religious education may have an illuminating and shocking experience by visiting or teaching week after week in any average Sunday-school with his critical attention and judgment at their best. This is the precise experience that a rational re former of the Sunday-school must have, at least in the beginning of his endeavors. This chapter attempts to sketch such an experience.
