Book excerpt: Solving Kashmir is a treatise on the Kashmir imbroglio that gives a deep insight into the myriad facets of the dispute in the State of JandK. It brings into focus the historical perspective, the geo-strategic and geo-political imperatives, as also the interests of the world powers and other regional players especially Pakistan and to an extent China. This vital piece of real estate located in the under belly of the CARS and Russia gives access to Tibet, Afghanistan and Pakistan. JandK is strategically significant to India's existence as a nation. Historically, Kashmir has been an important gateway for marauders entering the country. Losing control of JandK would open up the floodgates again. Kashmir gives India access to the strategically significant countries around JandK. It is our jewel in the crown. The main players in the dispute namely, India and Pakistan have gone to war four times over the issue with Pakistan enduring humiliating defeats, including its partition with the creation of Bangladesh. Having failed in its conventional attempts to wrest Kashmir and still in search of its identity, Pakistan has exercised the low cost/ no cost proxy war option, exploiting the ethnic and religious sentiments of the local Kashmiris, as also drumming up support from religious fundamentalists internationally. The nuclear dimension adding to the tinder box forces the international community of nations to concentrate efforts to bring the two nations to the negotiating table and resolve the problem bilaterally in accordance with the Shimla Agreement, however, with no significant success. How long will India continue to bleed? and "Where do you go from here?" are questions that willcontinue to haunt India for years to come.

The dam burst the night boys from the separatist JKLF group were freed in exchange for the release of Rubaiya Sayeed, the Union home minister's daughter. As Farooq Abdullah had predicted, the government's caving in emboldened many Kashmiris into thinking that azaadi was possible. It was a long, slow haul to regaining control. From then to now, A.S. Dulat has had a continuous engagement with Kashmir in various capacities. The initiatives launched by the Vajpayee government, in power from 1998 to 2004, were the high point of this constant effort to keep balance in a delicate state. In this extraordinary memoir, Dulat gives a sweeping account of the difficulties, successes and near triumphs in the effort to bring back Kashmir from the brink. He shows the players, the politics, the strategies and the true intent and sheer ruthlessness of the meddlers from across the border. Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years paints an unforgettable portrait of politics in India's most beautiful but troubled state.

Book excerpt: Few bilateral conflicts have proven as resistant to resolution as the Kashmir disputebetween India and Pakistan. What explains the tenacity of this dispute? The answer iscomplex and goes to the very basis of state-construction in South Asia. India, which hadbeen created as a civic polity, initially sought to hold on to this Muslim-majority state todemonstrate its secular credentials. 1 Pakistan, in turn, had laid claim to Kashmir becauseit had been created as the homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. 2 After the break-up ofPakistan in 1971 the Pakistani irredentist claim to Kashmir lost substa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides analysis of the legal status of territories of the former Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir, considering potential opportunities for Kashmir conflict resolution. Containing a detailed survey of relevant legislation and international documents, chapters throughout this book investigate the attempts and failures of Kashmir conflict resolution, holding up factors which could enable more peaceful relations between India and Pakistan with inclusion of the inhabitants of the erstwhile Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir. The book goes further than outlining how India and Pakistan determine the legal status of their portions of Kashmir by demonstrating the complexity of legal arrangements and why this protracted conflict is so difficult to resolve. As the Kashmir conflict is not only about territory and irredentism, themes such as cultural and national identity, power procurement, territorial security, communal rivalry, religious radicalisation, economic factors, and social issues are all taken into consideration. Law and Conflict Resolution in Kashmir will appeal to students and scholars of peace and conflict studies, international relations, international law studies, and South Asian studies. Download or read book Kashmir Now and Then; Is There Any Solution written by Ghulam Falahi and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy-one years have passed since Kashmir dispute in the South Asian sub-continent was born, a tragedy that in its immediate aftermath saw killings of thousands of people in 1947 and displacement of millions, particularly from the Jammu region. In its latest reincarnation of about 3 decades of popular resistance movements, nearly 100.000 people have been killed with hundreds of thousands more wounded- both physically and psychologically. Every day consumes yet more lives, destroys more homes causing yet more scars. Geographically located between the two nuclear rivals- India and Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir have transmuted into a series of tragedies that has left the future of nearly 15 million Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) uncertain: a major cause of concern for whole of the region and beyond. The purpose of this book is to explain how the Kashmir conflict has come to the present situation and how it becomes a threat to South Asia's peace and to the global security in the twenty-first century. As present increasing tension like war scenario of Indo-pak is indicating. Also, to shed a light on what can be done about this situation. However, this book is structured around five key points. 1.The roots of crisis and how it happened since 1947. Why Late Prime Minister of Kashmir Shaikh Mohammad Abdullah was dismissed and put in prison for ten years without any concrete evidence and what went wrong between Shaikh Abdullah and Late Prime Minister of India Mr Nehru close friend of Shaikh Abdullah and Kashmir himself. What developments took place during that period? Why Shaikh Abdullah agreed to be a chief Minister rather than to be the Prime Minister and how he betrayed the nation. 2.The book explores New Delhi's rigid attitude towards Kashmir and its inhabitants. India, ruled the state through a group of fake and illegitimate politicians of their own creation, for whose vested interests they pushed the state into a deep internal turmoil. Therefore, some important historical facts and episodes have been recorded to establish this fact.3.Special statues of Kashmir in Indian union have been discussed. A change of Indian stance from plebiscite to Integral part of India and role of so-called Kashmiri leadership in this regard.4.How present crisis that erupted in 1989-1990 lie in a post 1947 history of denial of democratic rights and institutions to the people of J&K. Responsibility for destabilizing Jammu and Kashmir state and pushing it into armed conflict lays squarely with Indian Government.5.Denial of right of self of determination granted resolved by United Nations, betrayals and broken promises by so called leaders, plus fraudulent fake elections held in the state were other causes to push the people towards armed struggle.6.While reading this book the readers will come across many episodes such as Pakistan's role during the insurgency, Kargil war, turns and shifts at international level, especially horrific incidents of 9/11, and other events within India and Pakistan and their impact on Kashmir issue, these have been documented only with a view to enable policy makers to draw lessons so that future policies are framed, keeping in view the bitter experiences of the past.7. Some healthy proposals have been put forward for Indian and Pakistan to end the miseries of the Kashmiri people who are suffering for last 70 decades.
