WHO DOES MARFAN SYNDROME HAVE AN EFFECT ON? Marfan syndrome is, within reason, not unusual, affecting 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 people. It's been found among people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. WHAT CAUSES MARFAN SYNDROME? When you have Marfan syndrome, there's an illness inside the gene that encodes the shape of fibrillin and the elastic fibers, a primary issue in connective tissue. This gene is called fibrillin-1, or FBN1. In most cases, Marfan syndrome is inherited. The pattern is referred to as "autosomal dominant," which means it occurs equally in women and men and can be inherited from just one person with Marfan syndrome. People who have Marfan syndrome have a 50% chance of passing the sickness on to their kids. In 25% of cases, a new genetic illness occurs due to an unknown motive.
