"Warriors into Workers argues that the Union Army was both a social and a socializing institution, making significant but previously unexamined contributions to the formation of American industrial society. This book connects with the recent surge of interest in the social history of the Civil War, and addresses significant issues in labor and economic history, military history, community studies, political culture, and gender."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlisting memory in a new fight for freedom From the Gilded Age through the Progressive era, labor movements reinterpreted Abraham Lincoln as a liberator of working people while workers equated activism with their own service fighting for freedom during the war. Matthew E. Stanley explores the wide-ranging meanings and diverse imagery used by Civil War veterans within the sprawling radical politics of the time. As he shows, a rich world of rituals, songs, speeches, and newspapers emerged among the many strains of working class cultural politics within the labor movement. Yet tensions arose even among allies. Some people rooted Civil War commemoration in nationalism and reform, and in time, these conservative currents marginalized radical workers who tied their remembering to revolution, internationalism, and socialism. An original consideration of meaning and memory, Grand Army of Labor reveals the complex ways workers drew on themes of emancipation and equality in the long battle for workers’ rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, Britain and France imported workers from their colonies to labor behind the front lines. The single largest group of support labor came not from imperial colonies, however, but from China. Xu Guoqi tells the remarkable story of the 140,000 Chinese men recruited for the Allied war effort. These laborers, mostly illiterate peasants from north China, came voluntarily and worked in Europe longer than any other group. Xu explores China’s reasons for sending its citizens to help the British and French (and, later, the Americans), the backgrounds of the workers, their difficult transit to Europe—across the Pacific, through Canada, and over the Atlantic—and their experiences with the Allied armies. It was the first encounter with Westerners for most of these Chinese peasants, and Xu also considers the story from their perspective: how they understood this distant war, the racism and suspicion they faced, and their attempts to hold on to their culture so far from home. In recovering this fascinating lost story, Xu highlights the Chinese contribution to World War I and illuminates the essential role these unsung laborers played in modern China’s search for a new national identity on the global stage.

Book excerpt: In this portrait of Dubuque, Iowa, Russell Johnson combines personal narratives with social, political, and economic analysis to shed new light on what the War meant for one city and for the rapidly growing north. Johnson examines the experiences of Dubuque's soldiers and their families to answer crucial questions: What impact did the Civil War have on the economic and social life of Dubuque? How did military service affect the social mobility of veterans? And how did army service, as a form of industrial organization, help create a modern workforce? Warriors into Workers makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the formation of American industrial society, and addresses key issues in labor history, military history, political culture, and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military, in one form or another, are always part of the picture. This unique and compelling study investigates the circumstances that have produced starkly different systems of recruiting and employing soldiers in different parts of the globe over the last 500 years, on the basis of case studies from Europe, Africa, America, the Middle East and Asia. The authors, including Robert Johnson, Frank Tallett and Gilles Weinstein, conduct an international comparison of military service and warfare as forms of labour, and the soldiers as workers. This is the first study to undertake a systematic comparative analysis of military labour, addressing two distinct, and normally quite separate, communities: labour historians and military historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As many as 20,000 women worked in Union and Confederate hospitals during America's bloodiest war. Black and white, and from various social classes, these women served as nurses, administrators, matrons, seamstresses, cooks, laundresses, and custodial workers. Jane E. Schultz provides the first full history of these female relief workers, showing how the domestic and military arenas merged in Civil War America, blurring the line between homefront and battlefront. Schultz uses government records, private manuscripts, and published sources by and about women hospital workers, some of whom are familiar--such as Dorothea Dix, Clara Barton, Louisa May Alcott, and Sojourner Truth--but most of whom are not well-known. Examining the lives and legacies of these women, Schultz considers who they were, how they became involved in wartime hospital work, how they adjusted to it, and how they challenged it. She demonstrates that class, race, and gender roles linked female workers with soldiers, both black and white, but became sites of conflict between the women and doctors and even among themselves. Schultz also explores the women's postwar lives--their professional and domestic choices, their pursuit of pensions, and their memorials to the war in published narratives. Surprisingly few parlayed their war experience into postwar medical work, and their extremely varied postwar experiences, Schultz argues, defy any simple narrative of pre-professionalism, triumphalism, or conciliation.

Book excerpt: The present issue of ZooKeys comprises a series of papers honoring Prof. Kumar Krishna, the leading au-thority on the systematics and biology of termites (Isoptera). After becoming exposed to termite systematics under the tutelage of Mittan L. Roonwal in India, Kumar received his doctoral training from the legendary termite systematist and evolutionary biologist Alfred E. Emerson at the University of Chicago. Subsequently, Kumar moved to the City University of New York and the American Museum of Natural History from where, even today, he has produced some of the most important contributions to the study of termites, most notably his two-volume set, Biology of Termites (1969?1970, Academic Press), and the forthcoming monumental Treatise on the Isoptera of the World (AMNH). Herein colleagues and friends recognize his lifetime of accomplishments in biological systematics by presenting original papers on insect lineages as diverse as termites and grasshoppers, and flies and bees, among others. A brief biographical account and list of his publications to date are provided.

Ranging from the beginning of the reform movement to the passing of the Workmen's Compensation Act, the authors look at the legal and financial position of workers in the 1830s and before; the 19th-century statistics on work injury in mines, railways, and factories; and the significance of the new industrial law

Book excerpt: HANDBOOK FOR INFANTRYMEN of the WORKERS and PEASANTS RED ARMY, VOLUME No.1, with 1938 Red Army Infantry Manual, Drill Positions, and The Duties of the Individual Soldier from The Infantry Combat Manual, 1942. by Igor Dobroff and Mark A. Sevigny, with English translation by Igor Dobroff, 2009. The R.K.K.A., The Workers and Peasants Red Army, was the army of the Soviet Union before and during the Second World War, a conflict known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War.This book is an English-language World War II re-enactor's and historian's field reference guide for Red Army Infantrymen. The manual is 95 pages long and includes over 30 drawings and diagrams from original Red Army manuals and is formatted to appear similar to WW2 Red Army manuals. The commands have been translated into English, but are also presented in their original Cyrillic and phonetic versions [to aid pronunciations] as well. Volume 1 of the Handbook for Infantrymen contains information on Red Army drill, rifle positions, marching, basic squad and platoon marching formations, and ceremonies. In this volume we have included detailed information and drawings on drill movements and formations as well as marching formations. The contents are translations and extrapolations from the 1938 Red Army Soldier's Manual, but with some material from the 1947 Soldier's Manual that reflect practices developed during the Great Patriotic War. We also have chapters relating to soldiers' duties, translated from the 1942 Infantry Combat Manual of the R.K.K.A., as well as some miscellaneous subjects from other R.K.K.A. sources. A brief synopsis of the contents are listed below. [ NOTE: Although this volume contains a page of basic combat commands and explanations of how to crawl and run, but it does not contain information on Red Army combat formations or tactics. For WW2 Red Army combat instructions and practices we highly recommend Charles Sharp's SOVIET INFANTRY TACTICS IN WORLD WAR II [1944]. Every serious Red Army re-enactor and historian should own a copy of Sharp's book in any case.] Chapters of this manual: I. DUTIES OF SOLDIERS AND COMMANDERS II.
