A key decision made at the highest levels of any military is the trade-off between allocating resources to system acquisition versus allocating resources to maintain force readiness through training. Advanced Distributed Simulations (ADS) provide a mechanism for tactical combat training through man-in-the-loop simulators and Computer Generated Forces (CGF). The potential for using ADS to address the trade-offs for allocating resources is dampened by the unrealistic behavior of CGF. Phase 1 of this project produced algorithms, data structures, and a methodology for incorporating the effects of training and environmental stressors to improve CGF behavioral realism. in Phase 11, we expanded and enhanced the technical feasibility for including these effects in CGF entities on simulated battlefields. The resulting product is called the Training Effects and Stressor Integration Module (TESTIM). it can provide the Army with the ability to improve the realism of CGF entities in ADS and other human performance models. TESTIM can also be used to assess the expected payoff of training in terms of improved performance."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: As part of the Skills Selection and Sustainment (S3) program, this research evaluated the potential effectiveness of spatial, psychomotor, and leadership scales as additional selection criteria for the Excellence in Armor (EIA) program. The S3 predictor tests were administered to 1,642 One Station Unit Training (OSUT) soldiers at the Fort Knox reception station. In addition, 479 19K (M1 tank crewmen) OSUT soldiers were given an engagement tank gunnery test on the high-fidelity Institutional Conduct of Fire Trainer (I-COFT). The I-COFT test included offensive and defensive engagements fired in normal and degraded operational modes. The primary analysis evaluated I-COFT speed and accuracy as a function of S3 spatial/psychomotor scores. The S3 spatial/psychomotor tests were a strong predictor of simulated tank gunnery performance, yielding a correlation of .54 with I-COFT speed/accuracy. The 2-1/2-month interval between the predictor and criterion tests suggests that the relationship should remain stable over time, and the relationship shrank only slightly when the EIA soldiers were given additional training. The results indicate that including the S3 tests in the EIA selection process would result in EIA graduates with stronger gunnery skills. The intent of this symposium, titled Coalition Air Warfare during the Korean War, 1950 -1953, was to focus not only on the contributions made by the armed forces of the United States, but also on those of America's allies. The diverse group of panelists and speakers included not only scholars with subject matter expertise, but also veteran soldiers, sailors, and airmen who had served in that conflict. It was hoped that the melding of these diverse perspectives would provide interesting, if sometimes conflicting, views about the Korean War. The symposium organizers designated an agenda of six specific panels for investigation, including Planning and Operations; Air Superiority, Air Support of Ground Forces; Air Interdiction and Bombardment, Air Reconnaissance and Intelligence, and Logistical Support of Air Operations. Each session began with commentary by the panel chairman, which was followed by formal papers, and in some instances included a lively question and answer session. The papers and most of the proceedings found their way into print and are recorded here in an effort to permanently capture the activities, challenges, contributions, and heroics of the coalition air forces and the airmen who fought during the Korean conflict.
