Book Synopsis The Solar Dynamics Observatory by : Phillip Chamberlin
Download or read book The Solar Dynamics Observatory written by Phillip Chamberlin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was launched 11 February 2010. The articles focus on the spacecraft and its instruments: the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE), and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). Articles within also describe calibration results and data processing pipelines that are critical to understanding the data and products, concluding with a description of the successful Education and Public Outreach activities. This book is geared towards anyone interested in using the unprecedented data from SDO, whether for fundamental heliophysics research, space weather modeling and forecasting, or educational purposes. Previously published in Solar Physics journal, Vol. 275/1-2, 2012. Selected articles in this book are published open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license at link.springer.com. Book Synopsis Using Solar Radio Burst Integrated Fluxes to Predict Energetic Proton Flux Increases by : William R. Barron
Download or read book Using Solar Radio Burst Integrated Fluxes to Predict Energetic Proton Flux Increases written by William R. Barron and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-integrated solar ratio fluxes and their association with satellite observed solar energetic proton flux increases have been studied. The time-integration was only of the U-portion of the radio burst flux increase. The best correlations between the integrated radio fluxes and the proton peak fluxes were realized when the radio fluxes were multiplied by the factor exp (-3B), where B is the angular distance, in radians, between the site of the flare and the solar footpoint of the magnetic field connection between the sun and the earth. The solar footpoint positions were determined from the solar wind speed. Two-variate linear regressions were computed using the time-integrated radio fluxes at five discrete radio frequencies in the 606 to 8800 MHz frequency interval and peak proton fluxes at > 10 MeV and > 30 MeV. The higher frequencies of 2695, 4995 and 8800 MHz all correlated better with the > 10 -MeV protons than the lower frequencies. The > 30-MeV protons were even better correlated with the higher frequencies, but correlation with the lower frequencies were poorer. The Total Energy Density, E sub T, of the radio burst, an integration across the frequency interval of the time-integrated radio fluxes at each frequency, was found to be better correlated with the proton fluxes than any of the individual frequencies.
Book Synopsis Machine Learning Techniques for Space Weather by : Enrico Camporeale
Download or read book Machine Learning Techniques for Space Weather written by Enrico Camporeale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine Learning Techniques for Space Weather provides a thorough and accessible presentation of machine learning techniques that can be employed by space weather professionals. Additionally, it presents an overview of real-world applications in space science to the machine learning community, offering a bridge between the fields. As this volume demonstrates, real advances in space weather can be gained using nontraditional approaches that take into account nonlinear and complex dynamics, including information theory, nonlinear auto-regression models, neural networks and clustering algorithms. Offering practical techniques for translating the huge amount of information hidden in data into useful knowledge that allows for better prediction, this book is a unique and important resource for space physicists, space weather professionals and computer scientists in related fields. - Collects many representative non-traditional approaches to space weather into a single volume - Covers, in an accessible way, the mathematical background that is not often explained in detail for space scientists - Includes free software in the form of simple MATLABĀ® scripts that allow for replication of results in the book, also familiarizing readers with algorithms

Book Synopsis Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere by : C.S. Deehr
Download or read book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere written by C.S. Deehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ordered collection of tutorial lectures on the physical processes in the polar upper atmosphere given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "The Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere" held at Lillehammer, Norway, May 5-16, 1980. The polar cap is an important part of the high latitude atmosphere not only because of circulation and horizontal trans port in the neutral atmosphere and convection in the ionosphere, but also because of its unique energy sources and sinks. In addition, solar wind plasma is led into-the upper atmosphere by the geomagnetic field at the poles, and the polar cap is, as stated by Tutorial Leader Roederer in this volume, "the place where outer space meets earth". The atmosphere at lower latitudes is well-known to the ground-based observer, and the advent of satellite observations was simply the beginning of a new perspective. The exploration of the atmosphere at polar latitudes, however, proceeded in quite the opposite manner, and satellite maps of the polar caps may be compared with a relatively meagre set of ground-based data. Recent efforts to extend the polar observations from the ground have resulted in the need for a review of the physical principles and processes occurring in the polar upper atmosphere. The interdisciplinary nature of these efforts led to the emphasis here on a tutorial program.
