Book excerpt: Sojourner to Stoner: The Journal" is my record of Southeast Asia in the 1970s. I spent over a year as an officer in the U.S. Army in South Korea and close to two years travelling throughout Asia, first as a backpacker and later as a Hippie (yippee-ki-yay or more appropriately, hippie-ki-yay). This Journal (YING) is a companion piece to my photography books surprisingly also called "Sojourner to Stoner. The Photographs" (YANG) (You must buy the two books together: otherwise. the Universe will be out of balance and there will be chaos everywhere. or as Bill Murray quipped, "Cats and Dogs sleeping together"). I have documented a time, the 1970s, before the all-pervading Western culture (sex, drugs, and rock and roll in Levi's} and The Economic Miracle changed Asia irrevocably, The book is written from a traveler (Sojourner for Stupids) and a stoner (Don't Bogart that Bong) Perspective. Communism. Western culture and the traditional way of life are all fighting for the Soul of Asia, This is my vision of Asia, a bright (albeit smokey) beam of fight from a star that has already vanished.

I spent over a year as an officer in the U.S. Army in South Korea and close to two years traveling throughout Asia, first as a backpacker and later as a Hippie (yippee-ki-yay). “The Photographs” are a companion piece to my written book, called with great imagination: “Sojourner to Stoner: The Journal” I have documented a time, the 1970s, before the all-pervading Western culture (sex, drugs, and rock and roll) and The Economic Miracle changed Asia irrevocably. The book portrays the lives of ordinary people and their unique cultures, religions and traditional ways of life. The Asia of Conrad and Maughan is gone, and the war-torn Asia of Vietnam will also pass. This is my time-capsule vision of Asia, a bright shining light from a galaxy far far away that has already disappeared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How anti-fascism is as American as apple pie Since the birth of fascism in the 1920s, well before the global renaissance of “white nationalism,” the United States has been home to its own distinct fascist movements, some of which decisively influenced the course of US history. Yet long before “antifa” became a household word in the United States, they were met, time and again, by an equally deep antifascist current. Many on the left are unaware that the United States has a rich antifascist tradition, because it has rarely been discussed as such, nor has it been accessible in one place. This reader reconstructs the history of US antifascism into the twenty-first century, showing how generations of writers, organizers, and fighters spoke to each other over time. Spanning the 1930s to the present, this chronologically-arranged, primary source reader is made up of antifascist writings by Americans and by exiles in the US, some instantly recognizable, others long-forgotten. It also includes a sampling of influential writings from the US fascist, white nationalist, and proto-fascist traditions. Its contents, mostly written by people embedded in antifascist movements, include a number of pieces produced abroad that deeply influenced the US left. The collection thus places US antifascism in a global context.

Book excerpt: “Essentially an encyclopedia of pot, filled with such top 10 lists as ‘best stoner movies’ . . . plus a ‘pot-parazzi’ section with celebrities sneaking a toke.” —Billboard Do you know the difference between burning one and Burning Man? Does using the name Marley as an adjective make total sense to you? Do you chuckle to yourself when the clock strikes 4:20? Are you convinced that the movie Dazed and Confused deserved an Oscar? If you answered “Dude!” to any of these questions, then Pot Culture is the book you’ve been waiting for. For those in the know, it’s the stoner bible. For novices, it’s Pot 101. Either way, Pot Culture encapsulates the history, lifestyle, and language of a subculture that, with every generation, is constantly redefining itself. From exhaustive lists of stoner-friendly movies, music, and television shows to detailed explanations of various stoner tools to celebrity-authored how-tos and an A-Z compendium of slang words and terms, it’s the ultimate encyclopedia of pot. Written by former High Times editors Shirley Halperin (now a senior writer at Entertainment Weekly and a TV talking head) and Steve Bloom (publisher of CelebStoner.com), and featuring contributions by a host of celebrity stoners, including Melissa Etheridge, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Redman, Steve-O, and America’s Next Top Model’s Adrianne Curry, Pot Culture provides the answers to everything you ever wanted to know about pot but were too stoned to ask. “This is a fun book that every toker should get their sticky green fingers on. Clever and informative . . . Great book and a must-buy for all us loadies.” —Blogcritics

Book excerpt: Some advanced Stoners have achieved a low-level enlightenment (samadhi), but discover that living in the non-ordinary world is problematic, when confronting the straight-ordinary world. Many beginner Stoners are confused how best to approach psychedelics (including marijuana). And almost all trippers discover we have to compete with endless mind-chatter, and emotional overload during our Stoner experiences. And most of all, we wonder why most of the the wondrous insights disappear when we come down... With over 40 years of psychedelic experience that includes all types of psychedelics, we felt our writing this book could help demystify the entheogen experience. There are detailed discussions on how to trip, meditate, and how to retain insights and stabilize realizations. We've also included exercises that can lead directly to transcendent experience, and some true stories. This is NOT a book on religion - Stoner Meditation demands that we take responsibility for our actions, and learn from direct experience. Psychedelics are our spiritual guides, meditation is for clarity and balance of mind. Enter the wizard world where the combination of psychedelics and meditation creates profound awareness - Stoner Meditation. All profits, after expenses, are donated to charity.

Book excerpt: This contextual narrative of the 70-year history of the woman suffrage movement in the United States demonstrates how an important mass political and social movement coalesced into a political force despite class, racial, ethnic, religious, and regional barriers. Votes for Women! provides an updated consideration of the questions raised by the mass movement to gain equality and access to power in our democracy. It interprets the campaigns for woman suffrage from the 1830s until 1920, analyzes the impact of the Nineteenth Amendment, and presents primary documents to allow a glimpse into the minds of those who campaigned for and against woman suffrage. The book's examination of the 70-year woman suffrage campaign shows how the movement faced enormous barriers, was perceived as threatening the very core of accepted beliefs, and was a struggle that showcased the efforts of strong protagonists and brilliant organizers who were intellectually innovative and yet were reflective of the great divides of race, ethnicity, religion, economics, and region existing across the nation. Included within the narrative section are biographies of significant personalities in the movement, such as militant Alice Paul and anti-suffragist Ida Tarbell as well as more commonly known leaders Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

Book excerpt: Can the police strip-search a woman who has been arrested for a minor traffic violation? Can a magazine publish an embarrassing photo of you without your permission? Does your boss have the right to read your email? Can a company monitor its employees' off-the-job lifestyles--and fire those who drink, smoke, or live with a partner of the same sex? Although the word privacy does not appear in the Constitution, most of us believe that we have an inalienable right to be left alone. Yet in arenas that range from the battlefield of abortion to the information highway, privacy is under siege. In this eye-opening and sometimes hair-raising book, Alderman and Kennedy survey hundreds of recent cases in which ordinary citizens have come up against the intrusions of government, businesses, the news media, and their own neighbors. At once shocking and instructive, up-to-date and rich in historical perspective, The Right to Private is an invaluable guide to one of the most charged issues of our time. "Anyone hoping to understand the sometimes precarious state of privacy in modern America should start by reading this book."--Washington Post Book World "Skillfully weaves together unfamiliar, dramatic case histories...a book with impressive breadth."--Time
