Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil-Moisture Constants and Their Variation This paper summarizes the data gathered in the library and the field. The authors believe that it may be a useful reference for other researchers. For students, it may illustrate the fact that soil-moisture constants, far from being fixed, vary considerably with the physical condition of the soil. Some explanation is due of the procedure followed in compiling the information, together with some precautions as to its use. The data are from 901 samples of surface soil and 400 samples of subsoil. Data from published sources were combined with those obtained in studies at the Vicksburg Research Center. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moisture Content and Physical Condition of Soils Optimum; and, on the other hand, there is no especial difficulty in carrying some of our common crops to a satisfactory maturity in water cultures. The investigation described in the following pages Shows conclusively not only that physical condition and the several properties on which it depends have an intimate relation with the water content of the soil, but that there is marked accentuation in these properties at a critical water content; and that this critical con tent is identical with the optimum water content. The moisture penetration curve shows a minimum force required for penetration at the optimum water content; the moisture-apparent Specific gravity curve shows a minimum point at the Optimum water content; the curves for evaporation show a marked difference in the rate of evapo ration above and below the optimum water content. It is apparent, therefore, that the true significance of optimum water content is that particular content at which the soil can be put into the best possible condition for plant growth. The plant can then best draw its needed water from the soil because all the other factors making for good growth are also at their best. Moreover, an increase in water content in excess of the optimum generally produces a greater detrimental effect on the plant than a decrease below the optimum. Furthermore, it should be borne in mind that practical men in bringing a soil to Optimum water content judge when this point is reached by the appearance and feel of the soil; i. E., by the phys ical condition into which it can be brought, and not directly by any plant phenomenon. There is a widespread impression that the Opti mum water content for any one soil varies for different plants. That is, the physiological optimum, as determined by the plant, may not coincide with the physical optimum, as determined by the soil proper ties. While this may be true for certain exceptional cases, it is erro neons as regards the majority of common field crops, since the water content that makes for the best physical condition of the soil is as a necessary consequence the best for plant growth. Other evidence from experiments on wilting will be given in detail in support of this view. The available evidence seems to be conclusive that the problem of water supply and optimum water content is fundamentally a soil problem and incidentally a plant problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of May, 1895 Samples of soil are received daily for moisture determinations from about fifty observers located on typical soil formations in different por tions of the country. The samples are taken by a method not alto gether satisfactory but the best which has yet been devised for this kind of work. A small brass tube, about an inch in diameter and 15 inches long, has a thin brass collar inserted in one end to reduce the friction on the inside of the tube. This end is then turned off so as to make a cutting edge. A mark is placed upon the tube 12 inches from this cutting edge. In taking the sample, the tube is driven into the ground to the 12-inch mark, then carefully withdrawn, and a rubber cap put over each end to prevent the soil from drying out. The tube, thus protected, is put into a sack and mailed to this Depart ment, where a moisture determination is made by the usual methods. The sample amounts to about 100 grams, or approximately one-fourth of a pound. Especial attention has been given this season to the moisture condi tions in the truck soils of the Atlantic Coast, in the different types of tobacco soils in the Eastern States, and in the soils of the western or arid portions of Kansas and Nebraska. The principal object of this work is to study the relation of soils to water and to keep a record of the amount of moisture maintained in soils adapted to different kinds of 'crops or in soils under different climatic conditions. It was necessary, in order to have the results strictly comparable, to adopt some uniform kind of treatment, and, as it was impossible to secure exactly the same conditions of cultivation in such widely separated localities, the uncultivated soil, kept free from weeds or vegetation of any kind, was adopted as the standard condition of comparison. If we look at the tensions corresponding to 50 percent available moisture for the three soils, we find that for the clay it is h.5 atmospheres; for the 10mm 2 atmospheres, and for the sand atmos pherae. This information is arranged in Table I for various available moisture percentages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of June, 1895 The records showing the conditions in the West are all commented upon directly under the diagrams. AS a rule, during th1s favorable season the fields under ordinary cultivation and those which had been subsoiled and subsequently cultivated do not Show very different mois ture conditions. In some places the-effect of cultivation is not appar ent upon the moisture content of Soils. For reasons which have already been, given it is not to be expected that cultivation would Show a very marked effect upon the amount of. Moisture in the soil either in a very dry season or in a very favorable sea-son with frequent rains. The time when it would have its maximum effect would be after a wet season and when a dry period was coming on. The moisture content at this time should fall much more gradually in the cultivated than in the uncultivated land. This is shown to a slight extent in some of the records, but not to such an extent as would seem likely to occur under the most intelligent Cultivation of the soil. The small amount of data which has been collected is not sufficient, however, to warrant a close and final judgment in this matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil-Moisture Measurement As has been noted, the gravimetric method is the only commonly used direct means of measuring soil moisture. Simply, it involves taking a soil sample, weighing it, oven-drying it, reweighing, and expressing the original moisture content in percent of oven-dry weight of soil. The first step, securing the sample, is the most troublesome, the degree of difficulty depending on the condition of the soil. Sampling conditions are ideal when soil is just moist enough for easy ingress and egress of the sampling instrument, and where stones, roots, and organic matter are not a problem. Such conditions are seldom encountered. With free water in the soil, moisture can never be sampled accurately: water will drip off as the sample is removed from the ground or compaction may squeeze it out. Rapid sampling is essential to prevent undue losses. Stickiness, often a problem in wet soils, can be alleviated by keeping instruments clean. Where a wet layer overlies a dry one, samples taken from the drier levels may be contaminated. After the upper soil is wetted by a summer rain, for instance, removal of a sample may permit water to run down the hole toward drier soil. The same problem is en countered when samples are taken below a perched water table. Wet instruments add to contamination and should be dried between samplings. When the soil is dry and hard, the principal problem in fine textured soils is to get the sampling instrument in and out again. In coarse-textured soils particularly, samples may slide out of the in strument as it is withdrawn from the soil. Fortunately, after the soil dries in summer, its moisture content may fluctuate so little that frequent sampling may be unnecessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Movement of Soil Moisture It is clearly recognized that the analogy is imperfect in that the capillary potential and resistance to flow are dependent upon the moisture content of the soil, whereas electrical and thermal resistance are practically independent of the amount of current and heat passmg. Nevertheless this point of view and method of attacking the problem promise to become very helpful, and are believed to be a distinct advance In the treatment of a subject which has hitherto suffered on account of serio'us experimental difficulties and the lack of a coherent guiding theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Soil Moisture Determination Under Field Conditions The determination of soil moisture under field conditions is of vital importance to the agronomist, forester, hydrologist, and engineer. Those dealing in the plant sciences are primarily interested in the amount of water that is available to plants under various environmental conditions; the hydrologist and engineer are also concerned with soil moisture existing in the range above the field capacity and below the permanent wilting percentage. Continuous soil moisture measurement is necessary for full understanding of the nature of soil moisture move ment, but limited studies of soil moisture are often needed as well. Buried in the soil, the porous material of the unit wets and dries along with the soil around it, and the changes in moisture content affect the electrical conductivity of the unit. Wires lead from the unit to the surface of the ground, where the resistance of the unit is read with a meter. To convert resistance readings to soil moisture values requires calibration of the units in the soil being studied.
