Book Synopsis The Environment and Emerging Development Issues by : Partha Dasgupta
Download or read book The Environment and Emerging Development Issues written by Partha Dasgupta and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two and a half billion people are affected directly on a day-to-day basis by the allocation and use of purely local resources. Yet "official" development economics has concentrated on headline international issues and only recently begun to take account of the dependence of poor countries on their natural resources, the link between acute poverty and environmental degradation, and the problems associated with the management of local common property such as soil and soil cover, water, forests and their products, animals and fisheries. In this volume, part of the WIDER Program on the Economics of the Environment, expert contributors provide a set of authoritative studies of emerging development issues, ranging from foundational matters to case studies, original research (in areas where there has been a paucity of work) to survey papers. They address both analytic and empirical issues on the role of environmental resources in the development process, presenting explanations of existing situations and policies for the future. A wealth of interests and backgrounds is represented, and reflected in the cross-fertilization between papers.

Part I introduces the basic economic, biophysical, social, institutional, and policy aspects of watershed management. Part II illustrates specific watershed approaches through selected case studies from Asia and the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Large areas of the warm, humid tropics in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa are hilly or mountainous. Jackson and Scherr (1995) estimate that these tropical hillside areas are inhabited by 500 million people, or one-tenth of the current world population, many of whom practice subsistence agriculture. The region most affected is Asia which has the lowest area of arable land per capita. Aside from limited areas of irrigated terraces, most of the sloping land, which constitutes 60% to 90% of the land resources in many Southeast Asian countries, has been by-passed in the economic development of the region (Maglinao and Hashim, 1993). Poverty in these areas is often high, in contrast to the relative wealth of irri gated rice farms in lowland areas that benefited from the green revolution. Rapid population growth in some countries is also exacerbating the problems of hillside areas. Increasingly, people are migrating from high-potential lowland areas where land is scarce to more remote hillside areas. Such migra tion, together with inherent high population growth, is forcing a transforma tion in land use from subsistence to permanent agriculture on fragile slopes, and is creating a new suite of social, economic, and environmental problems (Garrity, 1993; Maglinao and Hashim, 1993).

Book excerpt: The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and FAO's Global Soil Partnership collaborated with experts from across Asia and other regions to produce the first-ever Soil Atlas of Asia. The aim of the Atlas is to raise awareness about the significance of soil to life in Asia among a wide range of audiences, including the general public, decision makers, politicians, teachers, and scientists from other disciplines. The Atlas comprises a series of annotated maps that demonstrate the diversity of soil characteristics across Asia in an easy-to-understand manner. It also explains how soils are formed, the key factors that shape soil characteristics, and why these vary across the continent. Moreover, the Atlas emphasizes the role of soils in shaping our daily lives and highlights the growing pressures on soils resulting from urban expansion, inappropriate land management, pollution, increased demand for food, and climate change. The Atlas encourages people to understand how their actions can help protect and restore soils while reducing degradation processes.

Book Synopsis Mixed-Method Evaluation of Watershed Management by : Bahram Mohammadi Golrang
Download or read book Mixed-Method Evaluation of Watershed Management written by Bahram Mohammadi Golrang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume evaluates technical and social aspects of a watershed management program in the Kush-Abad Watershed Basin in Iran. Author Bahram Mohammadi Golrang offers a way forward for a more integrated means to evaluate large scale rural environmental management projects, their effects on the physical environment, how to engage the public in such projects, and how nearby communities interact with them and perceive their effects. The analysis presented here focuses on land treatment efforts initiated by the Watershed Management Organization of Iran, and evaluation spans the project-planning stage through the project’s implementation to citizens’ perceptions of the project after it was completed. Project planners – especially those in developing countries – will find the lessons in this case study very useful in planning technically sound projects that achieve participation and satisfaction from local populations.
