In a distributed project setting, managing experience is even more crucial than in a co-located project. Problems like ineffective communication, lack of awareness and trust and restrictive information flow policies impede experience exchange and raise the overall effort for software engineers to collaborate. Moreover, sharing experiences is usually not part of the development process and considered additional effort. This often leads to failure of the experience management initiative due to a lack of participation. This thesis proposes a framework for qualitative and quantitative assessment of light-weight experience collection. Light-weight methods primarily aim at lowering the perceived effort and return a reasonable benefit to the experience bearers. This thesis proposes characterizing criteria of light-weight experience collection and a measurement system to measure gradations of expected effort and benefit of an experience collection method. To support knowledge managers in choosing the appropriate collection method, this thesis provides a catalogue of strategies from different categories and areas of application in distributed development projects.

Yet, despite the economic and practical importance of OSS, research has so far overlooked this phenomenon. This dissertation explores this phenomenon of acquisitions of firms active in OSS development. Michael Vetter examines the role of OSS in the pre-acquisition phase and the impact of acquisitions on OSS development in the post-acquisition phase. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, the author examines acquisition motives, acquisition likelihood, timing of acquisitions, and outcomes of acquisitions and discuss mechanisms behind variations across acquisitions.The findings from the studies contribute to research on acquisitions and OSS development while also providing insights into how to leverage OSS in target search, selection and evaluation processes as well as how to effectively manage acquisitions of firms active in OSS and the communities around them.

The German Computer Science Interest (GI) Group of Software Metrics and the Canadian Interest Group in Software Metrics (CIM) have attended to these concerns in the recent years. Research initiatives were directed initially to the definition of software metrics and then to validation of the software metrics themselves. This was followed by more and more investigation into practical applications of software metrics and by critical analysis of the benefits and weaknesses of software measurement programs. Key findings in this area of software engineering have been published in some important books, such as Dumke and Zuse's Theory and Practice of Software Measurement, Ebert and Dumke's Software Metrics in Practice and Lehner, Dumke and Abran's Software Metrics.

Book excerpt: The Eureka Software Factory project (ESF) was set up by a Group of European partners in 1987. Its objective was broadly to improve the large-scale software production process by introducing an industrialised approach to have The Software Factory Challenge social, organisational and technical aspects. The project was set up under the pan-European Eureka programme, and it was funded by the partners together with their national governments. This book is not a history of the ESF project, but rather a presentation of its main ideas and achievements, and an account of how the concepts pioneered by the project have become part of a general movement in both the industrial and academic domains. In this movement, the facility for the production, use and maintenance of large-scale computer artefacts (the Software Factory) is treated in a wide and `organic' way, so as to include concepts such as business value and process improvement; with the development of new technologies being driven by these new, wide requirements. This new approach is in contrast with a narrowly technological one, in which individual tasks like programming are aided by machines but in which the production process as a whole is not supported. The main body of the book is divided into four Parts. Part I gives a short overview of the ESF project and its ideas, and goes on to attempt to place the ESF work in the context of industry as a whole (with reference to both producers and users of Information Technology systems).
