Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to serve as a refresher for those who know the fundamentals, and to serve as a primer for those who don't. While intended to show slow-pitch softball players how to improve their game, this book will be helpful to fast-pitch softball and baseball players as well. After all, most of the principles in this book apply to any game played on a diamond, from Little League to high school and adult softball leagues to the Major Leagues. Most of us will encounter opposing players who can run faster, hit harder, and throw further than we can. But that doesn't mean we have to concede victory. Maybe we can run fast longer, hit more consistently, and throw more accurately. If you're willing to learn and invest in some off-field training, you can often overcome superior athletic skills possessed by the opposition. This book is intended to give you the tools needed to amplify your natural skills. I have played organized ball for over 60 years and, fortunately, I got off to a good start, thanks to fundamentals instilled in me from the very beginning. I began playing organized baseball in early grade school and continued playing summer baseball for the next 10 years under the tutelage of legendary Iowa coach George Engebretson. George coached baseball in the ultra-small town of Rembrandt (200 souls). Nearly every team his charges played against came from much larger towns, yet George's teams were nearly always victorious because he had his players so well grounded in fundamentals. Opposing teams were seldom so well taught. Thus, even when an opposing team had superior athletes, as was often the case, George's team was still dominant. I also played high school baseball for some excellent coaches. Those coaches had an easier job than most because George had already smoothed the rough edges of all the players. Let me hasten to add that those high school coaches taught us quite a bit, too, but they didn't have to start at square one, thanks to George. Coaches Hulsebus, Skogerboe, and Rath could focus on the more advanced nuances of the game and they did a wonderful job. Following high school, I didn't play organized ball while working my way through DeVry Technical Institute (now DeVry University) in Chicago. Once I had graduated there and settled into a career, I resumed playing ball, this time softball, and have played almost continuously ever since. In the 2013 National Senior Games, my team won gold medals in our age group; three teammates and I were selected as All-Americans (wish George was still around to see that!). I often see players who were never taught the proper fundamentals of playing ball or, if they were, the lessons never stuck. For every player I see fitting that description, I'd wager they cost their team about a run per game, on average. That could get very expensive if there is more than one of those players on a team, especially if their opponents have no such handicap. The first chapters of this book will describe the things that a player should do automatically while playing softball. Succeeding chapters will suggest things a player can do to improve his game when not on the field, things I believe will help any player enhance his natural abilities. Incidentally, please excuse my apparent sexism in this volume. I realize that females play softball and will read this book, too, hopefully. When you see masculine pronouns, I'm just trying to keep it simple. That makes it so much easier than using something like "he/she" or some other gender-neutral term. Rest assured that I'm directing my thoughts to both sexes. Softball is one athletic endeavor in which you can participate almost your entire life. With the growth of senior softball, there's really no reason to hang up your cleats until physical infirmities arise, but even those often can be forestalled with proper conditioning. I hope this book helps you enjoy even more the game we all love.

Book excerpt: SWAG 101 by Rob Crews "The trajectory of learning has changed, therefore the trajectory of teaching must change as well. Be innovative in player development." "I love talking the game with Rob Crews, especially when you talk about hitters. The insight that Rob has given me when it comes down to his perspective on hitting has been very beneficial to me as a hitting coach. You are not going to find another hitting coach as passionate as Coach Crews." -TIM WALTON Head Coach, University of Florida Softball "Rob breaks down teaching and learning not only for athletes but for the common everyday citizen. I recommend SWAG 101 to everyone interested in becoming more knowledgeable of the teaching and learning process no matter your intelligence level." -ORV FRANCHUK Hitting Coach, Los Angeles Dodgers "SWAG 101 teaches hitting and the mental game from a player's perspective. His innovative ideas and strategies are straight forward and keep the game simple. I'm proud to call Rob a teacher and a friend." -HOWARD DOBSON Hitting Coach LSU, Team USA Softball "This book is an absolute must read for those players aspiring to reach the top level game! SWAG - the secret weapon all great hitters possess but are reluctant to share." -LAUREN GIBSON 2013 SEC Player of the Year, Team USA Softball "Rob knows hitting and more importantly he knows hitters. In SWAG 101, hitters learn to know themselves through his teachings - perhaps the most critical piece to the performance puzzle." -KRIS HERMAN Head Cpach, Williams College Softball "The book does a great job of tying in the various components of learning and how important each aspect is to an athlete in their own development. Rob is world class when it comes to showing the countless ways there are for an athlete to improve -not just with the physical, but more importantly the mental facet." -MIKE STEUERWALD Head Coach, Chicago Bandits, NPF The bottom line is most athletes with great swings and great form, aren't even that good! So what makes them good? SWAG 101 is about Invisible Mechanics -the mechanics that we can't see. What goes on under the hood. Most of which precedes the swing. Its about perception. Organzing your thoughts. In this book, the author digs deeper into the athlete's operating system. Invisible Mechanics is the brain working together with the eyes to create a faster, more efficient response from the body. The COMPLETE GAME instructional model, as narrated by Rob Crews, combines mind/body research outlining and how effective teaching is continuing to evolve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010 twenty American women were selected to represent Team USA in the fourth Women’s Baseball World Cup in Caracas, Venezuela; most Americans, however, had no idea such a team even existed. A Game of Their Own chronicles the largely invisible history of women in baseball and offers an account of the 2010 Women’s World Cup tournament. Jennifer Ring includes oral histories of eleven members of the U.S. Women’s National Team, from the moment each player picked up a bat and ball as a young girl to her selection for Team USA. Each story is unique, but they share common themes that will resonate with young female players and fans alike: facing skepticism and taunts from players and parents when taking the batter’s box or the pitcher’s mound, self-doubt, the unceasing pressure to switch to softball, and eventual acceptance by their baseball teammates as they prove themselves as ballplayers. These racially, culturally, and economically diverse players from across the country have ignored the message that their love of the national pastime is “wrong.” Their stories come alive as they recount their battles and most memorable moments playing baseball—the joys of exceeding expectations and the pleasure of honing baseball skills and talent despite the lack of support. With exclusive interviews with players, coaches, and administrators, A Game of Their Own celebrates the U.S. Women’s National Team and the excellence of its remarkable players. In response to the jeer “No girls allowed!” these are powerful stories of optimism, feistiness, and staying true to oneself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why isn't segregation based on sex illegal in sports just as race segregation is? This book examines the controversial issue, arguing that "separate but equal" is neither achievable nor constitutional. Will the creation of coed teams help mitigate issues of perceived sex discrimination in sports, or will equity among male and female athletes come from better enforcement of the "separate but equal" ideal? This book examines this highly charged issue, specifically challenging the effectiveness of Title IX and arguing that it be ousted in favor of sex integration. This is the first book to present both legal and social arguments for the elimination of sex segregation in sports and provide tangible solutions to address this issue. Authors Adrienne N. Milner and Jomills Henry Braddock II lay out the potential benefits of comingling male and female athletes, illustrating how this process may translate to greater sex equality in social, economic, and political contexts. In addition, this forward-thinking work offers specific recommendations for facilitating the integration of sexes in sports and discusses the importance of changing attitudes and ideology within the sports community and the general public to achieve this goal.
