Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It gives us great pleasure to write the preface to this book, the second in the series of monographs produced by the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine. No part of medicine, no clinical intervention, is complete without thinking about its effect on the person’s life and the quality thereof. One of the most powerful determinants of this is work; a source not only of income, but of satisfaction and a sense of purpose and worth. The Academy, founded in 1969, is composed of senior European doctors spec- lising in Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine. It meets regularly to discuss matters of importance in the field, including teaching, research and ethical matters. It recognises that the ability of the speciality and of related ones to decrease dependency and increase autonomy and quality of life needs to be better known. Hence the production of these monographs. They will help readers access a vast amount of literature on the practice of rehabilitation and its effectiveness. They should be particularly useful to young doctors preparing for the European Boards certification in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine as they are authoritative and cover subjects in depth. Topics covered in the series range from basic sciences to the most applied areas.

Book Synopsis A History of Disability by : Henri-Jacques Stiker
Download or read book A History of Disability written by Henri-Jacques Stiker and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to attempt to provide a framework for analyzing disability through the ages, Henri-Jacques Stiker's now classic A History of Disability traces the history of western cultural responses to disability, from ancient times to the present. The sweep of the volume is broad; from a rereading and reinterpretation of the Oedipus myth to legislation regarding disability, Stiker proposes an analytical history that demonstrates how societies reveal themselves through their attitudes towards disability in unexpected ways. Through this history, Stiker examines a fundamental issue in contemporary Western discourse on disability: the cultural assumption that equality/sameness/similarity is always desired by those in society. He highlights the consequences of such a mindset, illustrating the intolerance of diversity and individualism that arises from placing such importance on equality. Working against this thinking, Stiker argues that difference is not only acceptable, but that it is desirable, and necessary. This new edition of the classic volume features a new foreword by David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder that assesses the impact of Stiker’s history on Disability Studies and beyond, twenty years after the book’s translation into English. The book will be of interest to scholars of disability, historians, social scientists, cultural anthropologists, and those who are intrigued by the role that culture plays in the development of language and thought surrounding people with disabilities.

Book Synopsis Lifelong Education, a Stocktaking by : A. J. Cropley
Download or read book Lifelong Education, a Stocktaking written by A. J. Cropley and published by Hamburg : Unesco Institute for Education. This book was released on 1979 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven internationally known educators were asked to assess lifelong learning especially in relation to lifelong education and (1) revision of educational thinking and (2) educational practice. The authors addressed several key questions on lifelong education: For and by whom? Of and for what? How can it be achieved? The editor's overview and discussion of basic issues and questions, and his working definition open the topic. P. Lengrand then looks at prospects and advocates that each person should try to implement basic principles at work. B. Suchodolski, noting Comenius' book "Panpaedia" and Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," protests the concept of education as a power of men over men--"It is worth living in order to learn!" Similarly, E. Gelpi sees withholding of education as an obstacle to sociocultural development. K. Richmond advocates a broad definition (education for all), while A. K. Stock stresses the need to seek out and serve the forgotten worldwide, or those excluded from access to learning. A. Pfluger discusses a unit-credit system, urging openness and continuity in adult education as prerequisites for lifelong learning. The book ends with a summary of theoretical and practical considerations based on the contributors' face-to-face discussions and analysis of the papers. (CP)
Book Synopsis Interactive Assessment by : H. Carl Haywood
Download or read book Interactive Assessment written by H. Carl Haywood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms interactive and dynamic would never have been associated with psychological and psychoeducational assessment a generation ago. They have currency now because of widespread dissatisfaction with the normative, standardized testing model, criticism of theoretical concepts of intelligence, recognition of abuses of standardized intelligence testing, and frustration with prediction and classification as primary goals of assessment. It is almost certainly true that public policy concerns propel scientific activity far more often than science propels public policy! In the case of psychological assessment, public policy concerns have arisen in the last 20 years primarily around issues of possible "discrimination" against members of ethnic minorities. At the same time, there has been a re surgence of dedication to "excellence in education" goals. These concerns have led to such extreme measures as prohibition of the use of standard ized intelligence tests to determine school placement decisions, especially for minority children. They have led also to a search for alternatives to standardized, normative testing. The chapters in this volume represent a variety of answers to this need.
