This book was released on 1998 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTRE THESE SE PROPOSE D'ANALYSER SOCIOLOGIQUEMENT UNE IMAGE FILMIQUE QUE NOUS AVONS CHOISI DE DEFINIR PAR LE VOCABLE D'IMAGE MENTALE. CECI PARCE QUE LE REGIME EN LEQUEL TRAVAILLE ACTUELLEMENT L'IMAGE EST CELUI DU MENTAL. D'AUTRE PART, L'IMAGE QUI CIRCULE RESULTE D'UNE PENSEE SYMBOLIQUE. VOICI POSES LES DEUX PARAMETRES PRIMORDIAUX QUE PRESUPPOSAIT NOTRE RECHERCHE. L'APPROCHE SE FAIT UNIQUEMENT PAR ANALYSE, SELON LES REGLES QUI SONT EN VIGUEUR DANS LES DOMAINE SOCIOLOGIQUE ET FILMIQUE, DE FILMS, DE CORPUS DE FILMS, D'AUTEURS ET MEME QUELQUEFOIS D'UN UNIQUE FILM. LES RESULTATS SONT REGROUPES PAR CHAMP : CEUX QUI TENDENT VERS UN MEME POINT, I.E. CEUX QUI PRESENTENT UNE CONVERGENCE D'IDEE, SONT REGROUPES ET TYPES. NOUS FORMONS AINSI DES CHAMPS DIRECTIONNELS. CHAMPS DESQUELS NOUS POUVONS PARTIR POUR EMETTRE DES HYPOTHESES. DES LORS, CE QUE NOUS CHERCHONS A FAIRE C'EST A CONFRONTER LE RESULTAT DE L'ANALYSE FILMIQUE AVEC CE QUE NOUS TROUVONS DANS LA VIE COURANTE. LES CORRESPONDANCES NOUS SERVENT AINSI A CONFIRMER NOS HYPOTHESES. DES DIVERGENCES, NOUS POUVONS SOIT INFERER LA NON VALIDITE DE NOS HYPOTHESES. SOIT EN NOUS FAISANT LA QUESTION UNE FOIS ENCORE ET DIFFEREMMENT, NOUS POUVONS DECOUVRIR D'AUTRES PISTES, ET PARTANT DE CELLES CI, EMETTRE DE NOUVELLES HYPOTHESES, OU FAIRE SUR CES MEMES HYPOTHESES PREMIERES, DES PROPOSITIONS QUI DANS LE PRIMAT DE LA RECHERCHE NE NOUS ETAIENT POINT APPARUES. NOUS DIRONS QUE NOUS AVONS PROCEDE EN RECUL OU ENCORE PAR AJUSTEMENT. LE CHERCHEUR DANS CETTE DEMARCHE ACCOMPLIT UN MOUVEMENT ENTRE L'IMAGE ET LE MONDE. CETTE IMAGE FILMIQUE PARTICULIERE ETANT LE "SANG" DE NOTRE SOCIALITE, NOUS CIRCULONS PAR LA REFLEXION QUE LE CHERCHEUR NOUS PROPOSE AU COEUR DE CETTE DERNIERE. L'IMAGE EST LE PIVOT PHENOMENAL DE NOTRE SOCIALITE. L'IMAGE EST NOTRE MYSTERE PUISQU'ELLE EST CE QUI SOUS-TEND NOTRE PENSEE. ET POURTANT L'IMAGE FAIT PEUR. AUSSI BIEN NOUS FAUT - IL QUESTIONNER CE LANGAGE IMAGINAL, POUR NOTRE PART DANS UNE OPTIQUE TOUTE SOCIOLOGIQUE, AFIN DE DECOUVRIR SON POUVOIR ET DE NOUS DECOUVRIR NOUS MEME.

Download or read book L'Image-relation written by Mathias Blanc and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Constructions of Cultural Identities in Newsreel Cinema and Television after 1945 by : Kornelia Imesch

This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newsreel cinema and television not only served as an important tool in the shaping of political spheres and the construction of national and cultural identities up to the 1960s. Today's potent televisual forms were furthermore developed in and strongly influenced by newsreels, and much of the archived newsreel footage is repeatedly used to both illustrate and re-stage past events and their significance. This book addresses newsreel cinema and television as a medium serving the formation of cultural identities in a variety of national contexts after 1945, its role in forming audiovisual narratives of a »biopic of the nation«, and the technical, aesthetical, and political challenges of archiving and restaging cinematic and televisual newsreel.

Book Synopsis The Production of Space by : Henri Lefebvre
Download or read book The Production of Space written by Henri Lefebvre and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992-04-08 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Lefebvre has considerable claims to be the greatest living philosopher. His work spans some sixty years and includes original work on a diverse range of subjects, from dialectical materialism to architecture, urbanism and the experience of everyday life. The Production of Space is his major philosophical work and its translation has been long awaited by scholars in many different fields. The book is a search for a reconciliation between mental space (the space of the philosophers) and real space (the physical and social spheres in which we all live). In the course of his exploration, Henri Lefebvre moves from metaphysical and ideological considerations of the meaning of space to its experience in the everyday life of home and city. He seeks, in other words, to bridge the gap between the realms of theory and practice, between the mental and the social, and between philosophy and reality. In doing so, he ranges through art, literature, architecture and economics, and further provides a powerful antidote to the sterile and obfuscatory methods and theories characteristic of much recent continental philosophy. This is a work of great vision and incisiveness. It is also characterized by its author's wit and by anecdote, as well as by a deftness of style which Donald Nicholson-Smith's sensitive translation precisely captures.

They draw on a wide array of case studies - from cooking stoves to missile systems, from 15th-century Portugal to today's Al labs - to outline an original research program based on a synthesis of ideas from the social studies of science and the history of technology. Together they affirm the need for a study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions"--Back cover.
Book Synopsis Introducing Intercultural Communication by : Shuang Liu
Download or read book Introducing Intercultural Communication written by Shuang Liu and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books on intercultural communication are rarely written with an intercultural readership in mind. In contrast, this multinational team of authors has put together an introduction to communicating across cultures that uses examples and case studies from around the world. The book further covers essential new topics, including international conflict, social networking, migration, and the effects technology and mass media play in the globalization of communication. Written to be accessible for international students too, this text situates communication theory in a truly global perspective. Each chapter brings to life the links between theory and practice and between the global and the local, introducing key theories and their practical applications. Along the way, you will be supported with first-rate learning resources, including: • theory corners with concise, boxed-out digests of key theoretical concepts • case illustrations putting the main points of each chapter into context • learning objectives, discussion questions, key terms and further reading framing each chapter and stimulating further discussion • a companion website containing resources for instructors, including multiple choice questions, presentation slides, exercises and activities, and teaching notes. This book will not merely guide you to success in your studies, but will teach you to become a more critical consumer of information and understand the influence of your own culture on how you view yourself and others.
Book Synopsis Fashionable Nonsense by : Alan Sokal
Download or read book Fashionable Nonsense written by Alan Sokal and published by Picador. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 physicist Alan Sokal published an essay in Social Text--an influential academic journal of cultural studies--touting the deep similarities between quantum gravitational theory and postmodern philosophy. Soon thereafter, the essay was revealed as a brilliant parody, a catalog of nonsense written in the cutting-edge but impenetrable lingo of postmodern theorists. The event sparked a furious debate in academic circles and made the headlines of newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. In Fashionable Nonsense: Postmodern Intellectuals' Abuse of Science, Sokal and his fellow physicist Jean Bricmont expand from where the hoax left off. In a delightfully witty and clear voice, the two thoughtfully and thoroughly dismantle the pseudo-scientific writings of some of the most fashionable French and American intellectuals. More generally, they challenge the widespread notion that scientific theories are mere "narrations" or social constructions.
Download or read book Making Meaning written by David BORDWELL and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Bordwell's new book is at once a history of film criticism, an analysis of how critics interpret film, and a proposal for an alternative program for film studies. It is an anatomy of film criticism meant to reset the agenda for film scholarship. As such Making Meaning should be a landmark book, a focus for debate from which future film study will evolve. Bordwell systematically maps different strategies for interpreting films and making meaning, illustrating his points with a vast array of examples from Western film criticism. Following an introductory chapter that sets out the terms and scope of the argument, Bordwell goes on to show how critical institutions constrain and contain the very practices they promote, and how the interpretation of texts has become a central preoccupation of the humanities. He gives lucid accounts of the development of film criticism in France, Britain, and the United States since World War II; analyzes this development through two important types of criticism, thematic-explicatory and symptomatic; and shows that both types, usually seen as antithetical, in fact have much in common. These diverse and even warring schools of criticism share conventional, rhetorical, and problem-solving techniques--a point that has broad-ranging implications for the way critics practice their art. The book concludes with a survey of the alternatives to criticism based on interpretation and, finally, with the proposal that a historical poetics of cinema offers the most fruitful framework for film analysis.
