This book was released on 2012 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Brunswick has about 1.8 million ha of private woodlots covering 30% of its total productive forest area. These private woodlots have traditionally strengthened the province's forest-based economy, primarily the rural economy, contributing substantially to the wood supply of the forest industry, as well as to other forestry activities, such as providing firewood and recreational opportunities. Over last several decades, the forest industry has been the primary manufacturing industry of the province, contributing substantially to the provincial economy by producing commodities and value-added forest products. In 2004, for example, the value of the wood products and the pulp and paper industries was $1.6 billion and $2.34 billion, respectively; most of these products were exported to other countries. Revenue from the forestry and logging sector in the same year was $1.07 billion with substantial value-added components, and gross output in silviculture and other support activities for the forestry sector was $84 million. Although contributions from the forestry sector have declined significantly over the past few years, they are expected to rise as market conditions improve and the industry restructuring process concludes. The study consists of a socioeconomic impact analysis that identifies the direct and indirect effects of the silvicultural expenditures, based on several socioeconomic indicators, including contributions to GDP, personal income, and employment. The study also aims to identify the long-term economic effects of the silvicultural activities, including the increase in the qualitative and quantitative productivity of the forests and the consequent benefits in wood supply to the forest industry.

Book excerpt: This report synthesizes results of stakeholder consultations regarding the sustainability of current woodlot management practices in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. The focus is on private woodlots, those not owned by large corporations for use in commercial forestry. The report begins with an overview of the extent and importance of Maritime woodlots, the role of governments in woodlot management, and initiatives to encourage sustainable woodlot development. This is followed by discussion of sustainability issues such as over-harvesting, lack of sustainable practices, and First Nations forest management. Areas of consensus as determined from the consultations are discussed, including reasons for poor management practices and the kinds of information needed to develop solutions. Areas of disagreement and regional differences are then summarized. The report concludes with recommendations to government and stakeholders. Appendices include forestry data.

Download or read book Canada's Forests written by Ken Drushka and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003-09-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ken Drushka analyses the changes in human attitudes towards the forests, detailing the rise of the late nineteenth-century conservation movement and its subsequent decline after World War I, the interplay between industry and government in the development of policy, the adoption of sustained yield policies after World War II, and the recent adoption of sustainable forest management in response to environmental concerns. Drushka argues that, despite the centuries of use, the Canadian forest retains a good deal of its vitality and integrity. Written in accessible language and aimed at a general readership, Canada's Forests will be a must-read for anyone interested in the debate about the current and future uses of this precious natural resource.
