This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mekong River has been a main source of conquest, conflict, and cooperation in the Southeast Asian region. Much has been written on the vital and critical importance of the Mekong River fresh water to the sustainable economic development of the Mekong Delta. This book selects the Mekong Delta as a case study of regional cooperation for water and food security for not only for Vietnam but also for the world in a new century of global economy. It focuses not only on the Mekong Delta as an integral part of the River but also on Can Tho City and its 12 provinces that produce over 50 percent of the country’s rice output and 60 percent of total fishery output. The book takes a micro approach to examine how each province is adapting to the twin threats of mainstream dams construction and climate change, reducing fresh water flows and increasing saline infusions on its present and future economy. Finally, it reviews the roles of international institutional arrangements, namely the Mekong Committee and the Mekong River Commission, in promoting regional cooperation among the riparian states for political and economic development of the Mekong Delta.

Book Synopsis Investment and Agricultural Development in Developing Countries by : Cuong Tat Do
Download or read book Investment and Agricultural Development in Developing Countries written by Cuong Tat Do and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard policy prescription to enhance the productivity of agriculture in a developing country like Vietnam is first to encourage the investment of farmers in their human and social capital and then to change the governmental institutions to facilitate the farmers investment. This book, therefore, analyzes the investment of farmers in their health, education, and social relationships in the context of Vietnams recent agrarian transition. Using the tools of regression analysis, the author has tried to measure the rate of return of investment in health, education, and social relationship of farmers on their income. Additionally, to measure the effect of local government policy on the performance of agricultural firms at the provincial level, the book applies current techniques to estimate the relationship between output of agricultural firms and performance of local government. As in other low-developed countries, the rate of return of investment in education is quite extreme and the rate of investment in health is small. The effect of investment in social capital of farmers on their income is quite complex due to the complication of the term social capital. Moreover, the effect of quality of local institutions on performance of agricultural firms at the provincial level is not quite statistically significant. The relationship is similar with other research findings worldwide when researchers want to measure the effect of quality of institution on the performance of firms.

Book Synopsis White Gold: The Commercialisation of Rice Farming in the Lower Mekong Basin by : Rob Cramb

This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is about understanding the processes involved in the transformation of smallholder rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin from a low-yielding subsistence activity to one producing the surpluses needed for national self-sufficiency and a high-value export industry. For centuries, farmers in the Basin have regarded rice as “white gold”, reflecting its centrality to their food security and well-being. In the past four decades, rice has also become a commercial crop of great importance to Mekong farmers, augmenting but not replacing its role in securing their subsistence. This book is based on collaborative research to (a) compare the current situation and trajectories of rice farmers within and between different regions of the Lower Mekong, (b) explore the value chains linking rice farmers with new technologies and input and output markets within and across national borders, and (c) understand the changing role of government policies in facilitating the on-going evolution of commercial rice farming. An introductory section places the research in geographical and historical context. Four major sections deal in turn with studies of rice farming, value chains, and policies in Northeast Thailand, Central Laos, Southeastern Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta. The final section examines the implications for rice policy in the region as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large market size and abundant resources of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), including a large, motivated and cheap workforce, a rich agricultural base, extensive timber and fisheries resources, considerable potential mineral resources, and vast energy resources have seen the subregion increasingly recognized as a new frontier of Southeast Asian economic strength. This book aims to assess the recent economic, social and political developments in the GMS and identify emerging opportunities and challenges facing the successful transition towards a market-driven economy. The countries of the GMS are at a critical juncture where subregional efforts and cooperation must be made to fully address the rapidly evolving issues that are vital to appropriate policy formation, yet which remain widely debatable. The deliberations here shed light on the development stages and offer policy recommendations for pushing forward subregional cooperation.

Book excerpt: The Mekong River Basin: Ecohydrological Complexity from Catchment to Coast, Volume Three presents real facts, data and predictions for quantifying human-induced changes throughout the Mekong watershed, including its estuaries and coasts, and proposes solutions to decrease or mitigate the negative effect and enable sustainable development. This is the first work to link socio–ecological interaction study over the whole Mekong River basin through the lens of ecohydrology. Each chapter is written by a leading expert, with coverage on climate change, groundwater, land use, flooding drought, biodiversity and anthropological issues. Human activities are enormous in the whole watershed and are still increasing throughout the catchment, with severe negative impacts on natural resources are emerging. Among these activities, hydropower dams, especially a series of 11 dams in China, are the most critical as they generate massive changes throughout the system, including in the delta and to the livelihoods of millions of people and they threaten sustainability. - Presents an extensive collection of eco-hydrological changes in the river basin driven by both nature and anthropological factors - Provides state of the art modeling, data analysis methodologies for complex socio-ecological complexity applied in the Mekong river basin - Includes specific cases of ecohydrology in the river basin, especially from the Mekong delta
